Wishes of Gray (Thoughts On My Birthday)
by Michael Doyle
In all of my wishes of gray
Today is just another day
I'm another year older
But no less the bolder
Created in my confession
Is my long ago connection
That I'll never be older than I feel
With both feet grounded, I keep it real
If there's a lesson I would instill
It's to do my best to fulfill God's will
Better to keep faith in being on His side
Then burying me in wounded pride
Life is lived by how we measure
Each day spent is marked as treasure
There's no hesitation in my sigh
No need for a quick or witty reply
Another year older and closer to death
I'll live life fully to my last breath
And if I look on the face of loving eyes
As I stumble on to what's next, there'll be no goodbyes
Only a see you later as I catch as catch can
Satisfied in how I've done my best to be the man
Who lived in his fullest sense of integrity
To give more than given to my best capability
Rather I end up knocking on Heaven or Hell's door
When it's time it's time, no one can ignore
But if I can look back without guessing
That I've taught my daughters well life's lessons
Encouraging them to be their very best
Then I'll know that I've passed the test
The one that truly matters most to me
Having affirmed the preciousness of their dignity
There will be no time for me to ever regret
If the one thing my loved ones never forget
Is just how deeply I have loved them with each breath
And if I can say this, there is no such thing as death
