Beginning and Ending With the Heart
by Michael Doyle
There are more things
We agree on
Than we disagree on
There are more common grounds
Than causes for pugilistic rounds
If we only address these simply
Catholic or Protestant in Ireland
Two rooms in God's good mansion
That need to learn to better compromise
Each group having so many people
That have been taught only to demand
And so seldom seek to understand
When seen through the eyes of a child
Like the one who once laid in a manger
Have forgotten the ways of mercy mild
Treating near relatives as if strangers
Forgetting the golden rule of compassion
Or at least treating it as if out of fashion
We need to learn loving ways again
Seeking the moments of coming together
Instead of those ways that push us apart
The soldier is the last person to want war
Knowing that there are ways to live better
Each of us beginning and ending with the heart
