Imagine My Surprise
by Michael Doyle
Imagine my surprise
At learning time is linear
The doctors opened my eyes
With a ditty about no longer being superior
Sitting there tugging at my cape
Hinting I'm no longer a masked crusader
But the prisoner of a lined gape
Mother Nature clarified I could not evade her
Time catches up with us all
Words of wisdom that I now recall
It feels only yesterday I came to understand
That I would not always be superman
Sitting here with pupils dilated
I think of the chances I hesitated
Certain there was time enough to find
And now yesterday has left me behind
Facebook has ruined high school reunions
In its incessant patter passed off as communion
Forgotten whispers from way back when
Become reminders of what might have been
Looking out these windows full of change
Somewhat mystified at how my life rearranged
Once happily caught up in arguments found compelling
Looking back, I don't find these all that appealing
Time catches up with us all
Words of wisdom that I now recall
It feels only yesterday I came to understand
That I would not always be superman
Sitting here with pupils dilated
I think of the chances that I hesitated
Certain there was time enough to find
And now yesterday has left me behind
Thrashing through life, plummeting into age
God knows I pray enough for the wisdom of a sage
Every room becomes an escape room with anxiety
And nothing is simple based on this complexity
Of thinking I might just win this game of thrones
But instead landing on feet though quite alone
I've followed the rabbit down its mystery hole
Hoping that I might yet find the meaning of my soul
