The Future We’ll Grow

The Future We'll Grow
by Michael Doyle

We've heard at the university
That monoculture destroys diversity.
While nature cultivates its legacy,
Working together against the plantation economy.

Chemical farming came disguised as evolution.
It was, in a sense, codified as the Green Revolution.
Throughout the world, like a horrific coin toss,
Everywhere we turn, we see diversity's loss.

In India, this resulted in soil depletion.
With carbon being released in a gasp of exhalation.
Nutrients have been lost along with fertility.
More and more is lost to the point of futility.

Burning to survive in a collapsed economy,
Debt and suicide have become quite legendary.
We counter this by making the soil healthy,
And this, in turn, creates our food security.

Working with our hands makes for a better living,
And through this, farmers are graced in their giving.
The more sequestered carbon yields more food.
The more food, the greater the elevated mood.

The path to healthy farming is one out of poverty.
Those with hands in the soil are being healthy.
Doing these things provides a warm explanation
Of just what it will take to revitalize the nation.

Soil, like so many things, isn't just property.
When looked at properly, good soil is a legacy.
It is to the extent of our best capability,
Our duty and is a most reverent responsibility.
