Children Jumping Shadows

Children Jumping Shadows
by Michael Doyle

I listened to a whisper barely heard
About separating myself from the herd
It wasn't the desire to stand out
As much as it was living in worldly doubt

I look around me, unable to truly see
What difference each can make separately
But I'm sure it's not as much as together
There is a begged question of what makes it better

Twentieth-century gurus play in the shallows
While hungry children are jumping their shadows
A handful of pixels build the hope of the few
Pressing fast forward in a world of worn-out shoes

Tiny drops of dreams that have fallen and felt
Become the oceans from yesterday's glacial melt
This world knows far too much desire and sorrow
As we reach forward into the unknown tomorrows

Of children who have been cast out by life
Whether through hunger or a continent's strife
We all need a little bit of transpired sunlight
As we struggle through the ashes of a darkened night

Twentieth-century gurus play in the shallows
While hungry children are jumping their shadows
A handful of pixels build the hope of the few
Pressing fast forward in a world of worn-out shoes

First Principles: The States Can Best Govern Our Home Concerns…I Wish Therefore…Never To See All Offices Transferred To Washington

“The States can best govern our home concerns and the general government our foreign ones. I wish, therefore … never to see all offices transferred to Washington, where, further withdrawn from the eyes of the people, they may more secretly be bought and sold at market.” – Thomas Jefferson (1823)

Periodic Burn Offs

Periodic Burn Offs
by Michael Doyle

It is all about maintaining our true wealth
When we cooperate with our natural health
Keeping the functions on which we depend
Is absolutely necessary, or we will all surely end

With a world less desirable for all to live
And perhaps worse, we might find nature won't forgive
Good stewards know this and will not compete
But work together to keep our natural spaces replete

Placing a call for California's learning
About the necessity and use of periodic burning
This is something needed for nature's improvement
And nature for a well-maintained environment

It's hard for progressive to actually progress
Believing that listening to others ends in less
They talk of controversy and make up uncertainty
Yet periodic burns benefit the land and people's livability

But more than that, whatever other desires
Periodic burns decrease out-of-control wildfires
It doesn't take much observation or sophistication
To reap the benefits from the cycle of mesophication

Placing a call for California's learning
About the necessity and use of periodic burning
This is something needed for nature's improvement
And nature for a well-maintained environment

To practice the precepts of good and wise government
We need to begin with natural and human development
Treating ourselves and the environment as best we're capable
This is what it will take to make our world sustainable

There's more than enough on earth to meet our needs
But not enough to keep up with the demands of greed
The future is best guaranteed through present responsibility
This means using every tool to the best of our capability

Placing a call for California's learning
About the necessity and use of periodic burning
This is something needed for nature's improvement
And nature for a well-maintained environment

Thought For the Day: We All Have Our Time Machines. Some Take Us Back, They’re Called Memories. Some Take Us Forward, They’re Called Dreams

Fiery Cinders

Fiery Cinders
by Michael Doyle

Hourglass sands spell tales of brutality
Whispering that most pirates keep their humanity
That is until they can only no longer see fit
Which mostly comes down to the matter of profit

In these moments, and when it's a Hell of a prize
It's strictly logic that there should be no witnessing eyes
None are to be left alive to tell the tale
That would put plundering pirates' souls in Hell

In fiery cinders, a ship sinks into the sea
There is no pomp in these circumstances to see
Only an end that must come to one day justify
In the day when muted voices of the dead can reply

That is to say, to the less-than-clever
That dead men tell their tales almost never
Sometimes, that's just how it is to be
As Jolly Rogers seals loose lips under the sea

A daring escape made before the watch change arrives
Is the only means by which some pirates survive
A defeated captain speaks his final fading plan
Bravado prevails, or they'll die to the last man

In fiery cinders, a ship sinks into the sea
There is no pomp in these circumstances to see
Only an end that must come to one day justify
In the day when muted voices of the dead can reply

A Cry From the Wilderness

A Cry From the Wilderness
by Michael Doyle

The Lion of Judah protects our salvation
The keeper of our faith provides our explanation
This family of faith prays in His name
To find our path perfected without blame

Paul and Barnabas sharply disagreed
About John Mark's journey, due to his needs
Yet, he grew to become one who would lead
Which indeed makes up for his past misreads

Peter and Mark both needed to take a pause
In spreading the gospel as God's cause
It comes down to the compassion of the God we follow
Who makes the stars from those in the shadows

From acts to redeem us with compassion
Jesus came to reason but also with His passion
From the mercy given on the roadside
There is healing truth that cannot hide

Son of David, not of Levi, He came to heal
Those diseased did not have sins to reveal
Christ came to love and bring us our salvation
Healing us regardless of rabbinical suppositions

Jesus tells us which direction to rise and fall
That we might each hear our spiritual call
Hearts are stirred to take the best action
That leads us to our best godly satisfaction

The Bible, as revealed, is the best love story
Written to and for us all and to be worn in glory
Do not be silent, but cry out all the more
To be close to Jesus and open the kingdom's door

Healing the blind so that they can see
Healing the wounded eyes with Heaven's mercy
So many reasons to follow Jesus' ways
Attesting to the truth throughout our days

We come as we are and grow to conform
Putting on Christ as our desired new norm
There is no reason to hide this joy in shame
Through Jesus, our hope bears no sense of blame

All of us are more than worth in God's sight
Whatever our wrongs, we too can get it right
Even a wretch like me deserves God's grace
Saved by the love of His holy embrace

However, judged it is that we may feel
Our prayers for mercy can make this real
We know ourselves as part of God's family
We can be and are recipients of His mercy
