First Principles: I Think the Best Way of Doing Good To the Poor, Is Not Making Them Easy In Poverty, But Leading or Driving them Out of It

“I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” – Benjamin Franklin (1766)

Thought For the Day: A Few Cobras In Your Home Will Soon Clear It of Rats and Mice. Of Course, You Will Still Have The Cobras

Sometimes Anyway

Dya's Southern Twilight
Sometimes Anyway
by Michael Doyle

Good food like gumbo is hard to replace
It opens people up and puts a smile in place
While a child makes a wish on the evening star
A wished upon wish just might take her far

But even the best sort of inspiration
Still takes hard work and dedication
As she gets older, every penny finds its way
To count toward that faraway sort of day

Down on the bottom of the mighty Mississippi
Lays New Orleans as a magical river city
Rich and poor alike hold onto their dreams
And some of these come true in New Orleans

Order up of pancakes as a Mardis Gras surprise
As the magic of moments opens a dreamer's eyes
A sugar coated gambler puts the money down
As the king of the ball puts on his crown

The one thing better than dreams is love
As the dancers waltz under the stars above
Making the taking closer every single day
As fairy tales come true, sometimes anyway

The True Test

War - Ukraine Burns Seeking A Bridge To Peace
The True Test
by Michael Doyle

There's a tear that comes
When your soul dies
As you watch your love
Slip from life, and you cry

We had edged to eternity
Standing there forehead to forehead
Now nothing will return her to me
Until I, too, am dead

I promised to catch her fall
But when she slipped off the bridge
All could do was call
Out her name on that heartbreak ridge

I brought flowers to her grave
Talking to myself, as if to her
Begging her spirit to know that I tried to save
Her, and my life has turned into a blur

They say there are seven steps of grief
Is one of these, wishing yourself dead
The sorrow is almost beyond belief
So many "what ifs" bounce inside my head

A simple joke with so much cost
If only I had caught her grasping hand
But that time of slowness has been lost
And there is nothing left to understand

One step closer to another chance to find
As I slip away into that veiled journey
Letting life seep out of my veins, no longer blind
No longer holding on to hope but to my destiny

All the words that told me that she cared
Made my life as it was meant to be
All the dreams that she had shared
And now all that I feel is dead and lonely

It seems after all, even superheroes cry
For those who tried but failed that test
Finding that battle wings make it impossible to fly
This dying moment seems is the truest test

First Principles: We Should Be Unfaithful To Ourselves If We Should Ever Lose Sight of the Danger To Our Liberties If Anything Partial or Extraneous Should Infect the Purity…of Our Free…Elections

“We should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections.” – John Adams (1797)

Thought For the Day: It Is More Accurate To Talk of Different Forms of Intelligence, Each With Its Strengths and Weaknesses

“Life cannot be classified in terms of a simple neurological ladder, with human beings at the top; it is more accurate to talk of different forms of intelligence, each with its strengths and weaknesses. This point was well demonstrated in the minutes before last December’s tsunami, when tourists grabbed their digital cameras and ran after the ebbing surf, and all the ‘dumb’ animals made for the hills.” – B.R. Myers, author (b. 21 Aug 1963)

Seven Ways of Living A More Godly Life

Dutch Pavilion - Godwit On the Shoreline
Seven Ways of Living A More Godly Life
by Michael Doyle

Taking and saving a life surrendered from sin
Following God's will and starting once again
Sanctification is the life's journey we travel
Never worried for our future; assured we will prevail

The first habit is to keep in constant prayer
From the early morning to night, without compare
Prayer is love for God expressed every day
A sort of holy conversation, active in every way

The greatest accomplishments begin on one's knees
Ensuring all we do well for God is something to please
Our God; this is the beginning of our faith and trust
As we accept God's sovereignty as we know that we must

We know that God is in charge of our souls
Leaning-in, in our understanding that God is in control
Worry only leads to evil-doing and our personal wrongs
Our trust in God's care is where we fully belong

This intimacy is our personal and holy relationship
And as such it is the walk of our rightful worship
We must keep these things constant on our meditation
Clearly thought over in our joyful contemplation

Thoughts and questions are raised in conversation
Focusing on God and not on our frustrations
But instead walking God's word we've come to know
All the rightful things for life and not just show

If we do these things in truly conformed obedience
We bring His commandments alive in their resilience
Putting aside the world to walk in pure righteousness
We are the children of God in all of our faithfulness

These habits are kept best through constant repetition
And meant to be practiced with ceaseless dedication
These habits must be kept and increased with dependence
Knowing that the Lord's path is not one of independence

The Holy Spirit must be imbued with the fullest power
Indwelling in the soul throughout all our hours
All of God's promises are fulfilled under His seal
This becomes believed in our daily moments we think and feel

In each dilemma, we must seek and follow God's will
Regardless of any quibbles that we might ever feel
We know that when we walk from God's good path
We fall and are judged within the power of the Devil's wrath
