Let Justice Be Done

St Catherine's Chapel - Grazed By Heaven
Let Justice Be Done
by Michael Doyle

Let justice be done though the heavens fall
Is a worthy maxim that we all seem to recall
Justice must be done regardless of consequence
It's a powerful construct said with confidence

But let it be remembered that Piso's justice served
Was not justice at all and, in fact, undeserved
By all who paid with a harsh penalty for this ideal
A solid reminder that justice must be kept real

To be kept real, justice must be served in balance
Penalty tendered with mercy provides society's assurance
Or else such justice can only bring the moral wrong
That preys on the weak and succumbs to the strong

Such a sense of justice is riddled full of fatal flaws
That Aquinas and others would never consider true laws
Still, does it matter if the skies should suddenly fall
If Atlas should shrug, would the world stumble to recall

That the whole frame of nature might yet fold and break
If humanity remains lost and caught upon this great mistake
All of life will become hurled into misguided confusion
And what passes for the law will be nothing but the worst illusion

How then does one stand secure amidst a falling world
Where so many wrong-minded notions advance flags unfurled
Into the battle that is the crack of all that might be
If perfect ideals could be found rounded by earthly beauty

In passive and receptive obedience that serves with frugality
In explaining the chains of slavery in terms of their legality
The pursuit of justice is, in all events, something extraordinary
And taken in the sacrifices that must be taken in their necessity

Thought For the Day: We Want A Society In Which We Are Free To Make Choices, To Make Mistakes, To Be Generous and Compassionate. That Is What We Mean By A Moral Society

“We want a society in which we are free to make choices, to make mistakes, to be generous and compassionate. That is what we mean by a moral society — not a society in which the State is responsible for everything, and no one is responsible for the State.” – Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013)

First Principles: The Ordaining of Laws In Favor of One Part of the Nation, To the Prejudice and Oppression of Another, Is Certainly the Most Erroneous and Mistaken Policy

“The ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy. An equal dispensation of protection, rights, privileges, and advantages, is what every part is entitled to, and ought to enjoy.” – Benjamin Franklin (1774)

Every Day With You

She's My Heart and Soul
Every Day With You
by Michael Doyle

In every way, people try to push apart
In all the ways that break our hearts
It's one in a million who stay the course
Instead of changing out that tired horse

Too many dreams they just fall apart
In so many ways, it simply breaks our hearts
Desperate souls try to drag each other down
All in the name of the jester's crown

Every day, every day with you
You're my one hundred, ever true
In every way, I hear what you say
I think you're the one that will stay

On every day, every day with you
I see it in all the things that you do
In every way, I hope my words and actions say
You're the one I want to always stay

Holding your hand to touch your heart
Yours is the love that will never depart
You keep me sane, in a world gone crazy
Bringing clarity on days gone far too hazy

Every time that we talk late into the night
I see your soul and I want to hold it tight
When all has gone wrong and I'm upside down
You bring me smiles to replace my frown

Too many dreams they just fall apart
In so many ways, it truly breaks our hearts
Desperate souls try to drag each other down
All in the name of just another jester's crown

On every day, every day with you
You're my one hundred, ever true
In every way, I hear what you say
I think you're the one that will always stay

On every day, every day with you
I see it in all the things that you do
In every way, I hope my words and actions say
You're the one I want to always stay

You laugh and think that maybe I need direction
Because I think our flaws drive our perfection
The things I do to try to bring you a smile
They may not be golden but they last awhile

With your hand in mine, I can stand strong
It doesn't matter if the world thinks we're wrong
You and I are the dream that I'll always want to live
It's towards that end that I will always give

On every day, every day with you
You're my one hundred, ever true
In every way, I hear what you say
I think you're the one that will always stay

On every day, every day with you
I see it in all the things that you do
In every way, I hope my words and actions say
You're the one I'll always want to stay

“We are either a united people, or we are not. If the former, let us, in all matters of general concern act as a nation, which have national objects to promote, and a national character to support. If we are not, let us no longer act a farce by pretending to it.” – George Washington (1785)

Oblique Stare

So This Happened - They Said Drinking Would Be the Death of Him...
Oblique Stare
by Michael Doyle

I looked up in an oblique stare
Upward into that cold ceiling
Fighting with God in my prayer
Hoping that my wish would be prevailing

Two daughters stood near by my side
I was not ready to leave behind
And to my Lord, I did confide
That I needed His mercy to find

Dear Lord, can you please hear me
You know that I love, respect, and adore thee
Please do not let me die or let me cry
I must be brave and live for them so close by

Take my life another day if you would
I don't mean to question and it's understood
That my life is yours for which I live
The girls don't deserve this, so, please your mercy give

Over a year later, I wait to hear about my medication
Keeping that day and them close in daily meditation
Thankful for this time that I have been given
And for my God, by whom I have been forgiven

End Game

The Soul's Spring Dream - Family Swim By
End Game
by Michael Doyle

At the base of our society
Is none other than the family
Where better to build a ministry
To make the changes needed for history

It's a struggle in drifting apart
We need to focus on matters of the heart
The stages of life bring hopeful tomorrows
To engender hope instead of sorrows

Everyone has flaws and then some
To find agreement is something awesome
Finding goals and planning together
Is the progression of something better

To know and then to be known
We need to find the love to be shown
Always working to listen in observation
Trusting is built upon that explanation

From this to the dependence and the resilience
Is the best path given in guidance
It's better to be interdependent on each other
Is how we will live and love best together

This sort of splendor is resplendent
The sense of being one, strong in commitment
Standing up in front of God and family
We need a spiritual covenant to love's sanctuary

We need to be felt insistently and much
And to be present in our every touch
It is this feeling that brings intimacy
God's the architect of love's sweet security

Working this system is how to go toward
All of the right things that move us forward
Trust, love, and the traces of true intimacy
Are the push of the pull of our chosen ecstasy

Applying the lessons of life makes the difference
Taking this into play beyond its simple inference
It is a decision that comes from within
Each of us giving our one hundred to be certain

Communication, communication, communication
This is the crux and by all rights, the definition
Of being together, better and lasting forever
This is what it takes for each to be ever so clever
