First Principles: For My Part, Whatever Anguish of Spirit It Might Cost, I Am Willing To Know the Whole of Truth; To Know the Worst, and To Provide for It

“It is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth — and listen to the song of that syren, till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those, who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it might cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.” – Patrick Henry (1775)

I Need You To Fight

Aspire Universe - Punching Through
I Need You To Fight
by Michael Doyle

I've never had great answers
To life's deeper questions
Like what is the meaning or how to cure cancers
But, I can say without hesitation

That I have meant to do good
To do the best that I have been able
And to the degree I've understood
Relying on God as more than fable

Here I am again out of answers
Searching for some kind of clue
Words appearing on paper, like a poetic dancer
All I know is that I'd give my life for you

Though I'm probably the last you want to hear
I need you to fight like you've never fought
Please be brave, I know you can persevere
And though I never liked it, I need you to fight

You have that spirit deep within you
I know that you can turn this thing around
This is your fight song, written just for you
Because when you're beaten in the corner, that's where I'll be too

In the Church of the Open Field

Tuscan Clarity - Old Car In the Field
In the Church of the Open Field
by Michael Doyle

In the church of the open field
The glory of truth is revealed
In fellowship of God's good company
In the exclusive claims of divinity

Darkness hates the shine of light
Preferring as it does, the things of night
Yet we, the children, gather in prayer
Putting away the things of the vanity fair

The world sees us as a form of living dead
As it weighs heavy to be shunned instead
When all of the comforts of a lifetime
Are treated like some kind of a crime

Come gather now, in the face of persecution
Bringing living love as our soul's contribution
Walking bravely in the face of blinding fear
We offer up love and are steadfast as we persevere
