Thought Of the Day: We Have Grasped the Mystery of the Atom and Rejected the Sermon On the Mount…the World Has Achieved Brilliance Without Conscience. Ours Is A World of Nuclear Giants and Ethical Infants

“We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount…The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.” – Five-Star General Omar Bradley (d. April, 8, 1981)

First Principles: The Mind That Aims At A Select Militia, Must Be Influenced By A Truly Anti-Republican Principle

“The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle; and when we see many men disposed to practice upon it, whenever they can prevail, no wonder true republicans are for carefully guarding against it.” – Federal Farmer (1787)

Na/GloPoWriMo #7: Spanish Flower Shadorma

Charmed Bora - Hard Day's Reward
Na/GloPoWriMo #7: Spanish Flower Shadorma
by Michael Doyle

Time stands still
As I turn away
Slowing down
Tides are felt
Deep inside my fragile soul
Innocence betrays

Castle sands
Slip through my fingers
Washed away
As always
I look into setting suns
Wondering at why

Best of times
Pass away too fast
In your eyes
In my eyes
I do believe it is true
I hate when you leave

Thought For the Day: The Principle That the Majority Have A Right To Rule the Minority, Practically Resolves All Government Into A Mere Contest Between Two Bodies of Men, As To Which Of Them Shall Be Masters and Which of Them Slaves

“The principle that the majority have a right to rule the minority, practically resolves all government into a mere contest between two bodies of men, as to which of them shall be masters, and which of them slaves; a contest, that — however bloody — can, in the nature of things, never be finally closed, so long as man refuses to be a slave.” – Lysander Spooner (1808-1887)

First Principles: We Should Be Unfaithful To Ourselves If We Should Ever Lose Sight of the Danger to Our Liberties If Anything…Should Infect the Purity of Our Free…and Independent Elections

“We should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections.” -John Adams (1797)

Na/GloPoWriMo #6: Setting Fires To Feel Joy

LEA13 Orpheus and Euridyce -Golden Slumbers
Na/GloPoWriMo #6: Setting Fires To Feel Joy
by Michael Doyle

I set fires to feel joy
It's just one of those tricks
That I employ -
I ate my twin inside the womb
Not being malicious, but...
Just to have more elbow room

They say,.. and maybe rightly so
That something is not quite right
If I'd really done it, it wouldn't be right
It was just a couple of lines in a book
But, they were worth the smile
If these made you look -

Instead, I spent the day traveling
Photographing as the day was unraveling
Into adventures with my daughters
Lincoln's Boyhood Home and a waterfall
At Hemlock Cliffs as I recall
This hour finds me a weary father...

Still, I found myself in need
Of writing a responsive poem
That others might want to read
When along came these two lines
Seeming nothing short
Of a wordsmith's verbal gold mines

First Principles: If By the Liberty of the Press Were Understood Merely the Liberty of Discussing the Propriety of Public Measures and Political Opinions, Let Us Have As Much of It As You Please

“If by the liberty of the press were understood merely the liberty of discussing the propriety of public measures and political opinions, let us have as much of it as you please: But if it means the liberty of affronting, calumniating and defaming one another, I, for my part, own myself willing to part with my share of it.” – Benjamin Franklin (1789)

Thought For the Day: All the Years Have Voice For Them That Will Hear; and Even the Simple Annals of the Common Place Events Have In Them the Heart of Epic Possibilities

“All the years have voices for them that will hear; and even the simple annals of the common place events have in them the heart of epic possibilities.” – Samuel Fallows

Na/GloPoWriMo #5: Pennsylvania In Transformation

IMAGOLand - Kick Ball Has Its Sides

Na/GloPoWriMo #5: Pennsylvania In Transformation
by Michael Doyle

Based on the prompt and
Pennsylvania – Poetry Daily (poems.com)

Other children, live freely and wild
As though energized to win the fight -

Standing as I stood.

Said in brave silence
With me, as though violence

said in shout. That would not let it go
I have long since stopped holding breath -

it's just something.

Feeling a bit too down-n-out,
The knowing of all learning

Off for it's moment, quiet uttering
Lacking game as it was

Life feels done much too short

And then before the other is due
A poem born of empty verse

Thought For the Day: Better A Thousand Fold Abuse of Free Speech Than Denial of Free Speech. The Abuse Dies In A Day, But the Denial Slays the Life of the People

“Better a thousand fold abuse of free speech than denial of free speech. The abuse dies in a day, but the denial slays the life of the people.” – Charles Bradlaugh (1833-1891)
