First Principles: I Am Willing To Know the Whole Truth; To Know the Worst and To Provide For It

“Are we disposed to be of the number of those, who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it might cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.” —Patrick Henry (1775)

First Principles: As For Me and My Household, We Will Serve the Lord

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”- Joshua 24:15 (New International Version)

In the Sneeze of A Sweet Blink

Casa Romani - In the Sneeze of A Blink
In the Sneeze of A Sweet Blink
by Michael Doyle

In the sneeze of a sweet blink
She was deeper than I'd think
Breathing through my old heart
Never to ever want to depart

The memories that we build
Whether at home or afield
Are those that I cherish forever
I've said that I'm at least this clever

To know just what it is I need
In the words that i write and you read
There between the lines, I have tried
And the times we have sighed

In the sneeze of a a sweet blink
We stand ever together and link
The smiles that we constantly share
In knowing each other cares

There are dreams we've yet to sleep
And promises that we'll always keep
One of these is to love you with all my heart
It's been the sweetest dream from the start

But I know enough to know what I need
In the words that I write and you read
There between the lines that I've cried
But trust that our love will always abide

First Principles: The Great Desideratum In Government Is, So To Modify the Sovereignty As That It May Be Sufficiently Neutral Between Different Parts of the Society To Control One Part From Invading the Rights of Another

“The great desideratum in Government is, so to modify the sovereignty as that it may be sufficiently neutral between different parts of the Society to controul one part from invading the rights of another, and at the same time sufficiently controuled itself, from setting up an interest adverse to that of the entire Society.” – James Madison (1787)

Thought For the Day: The Most Successful Tyranny Is Not One that Uses Force To Assure Uniformity, But the One That Removes the Awareness of Other Possibilities

“Freedom of the mind requires not only, or not even specially, the absence of legal constraints, but the presence of alternative thoughts…The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity, but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities.” – Allan Bloom, in the The Closing of the American Mind

Thought For the Day: Justice In the Hands of the Powerful Is Merely A Governing System Like Any Other

“Justice in the hands of the powerful is merely a governing system like any other. Why call it justice? Let us rather call it injustice, but of a sly effective order, based entirely on cruel knowledge of the resistance of the weak, their capacity for pain, humiliation and misery.” – Georges Bernanos (1888-1948)

First Principles: A Universal Peace…Is In the Catalog of Events, Which Will Never Exist

“A universal peace, it is to be feared, is in the catalogue of events, which will never exist but in the imaginations of visionary philosophers, or in the breasts of benevolent enthusiasts.” – James Madison (1792)
