In Gratitude For Santa’s Spirit

Distant Edge - Keys To My Heart
In Gratitude For Santa's Spirit
by Michael Doyle

"Dear Santa", that's how it all began
Sealed with love as only a child can
What he wanted most of all was family
That and a meaningful Christmas tree

He grew up endlessly chasing a little cheer
In the hustle and bustle of year after year
The meaning got lost in the red, green and blues
And that was the best of the best of the happy news

Christmas experienced through expectation
In a jaded world demanding gratification
Badgered and beat down by the holiday madness
Who had time for season's greetings and gladness

New York City is a world apart from the North Pole
Where the real meaning is remembered and given whole
On top of the world there is snow coming down
And the season wears it like a blanketed crown

In a give me, give me world the elves are busy
Tinseled up in the jingles to the point of being dizzy
Santa wonders what happened to yesterday's gratitude
When appreciation was more than mere platitude

Gone are the days of joy filled with fascination
They made way for the greed and commercialization
Overworked and frenzied going through the motions
All that seems left is the stress of unsatisfied notions

The magic it seems may be about to completely disappear
If we don't remember our reflections of Christmas cheer
The most important thing is to remember what matters
It's that we never allow our children's dreams to shatter

It is time to suit up and put the gloves back on
Times like these need Santa to joyfully press on
It is a tale of here and now; of now and not just once upon
And the spirit of Christmas must never be allowed to be gone

Understanding Beyond Things Said

Snowdrops - First Tree
Understanding Beyond Things Said
by Michael Doyle

There it is in the subtle turn of your head
All things that go beyond what is said
It's there in the touch of your hand isn't it dear
Those moments when your love shines very clear

As we walk and talk about sights we've yet to see
All those many things we will grow into gradually
And it's there as you try to tell me without saying
That your love is real and that you're not playing

Yet, my startled look thanks to words you said
I can't seem to get wrapped in my head
You want the biggest tree for you and me
To be the one frocked for our Christmas tree

Looking up at the ceiling, it's clear to see
These dimensions are an impossibility
But if there's a way to make it happen, I will
Just for your smile and to see your thrill

You smile at me like I can make this all true
I wonder aloud at the belief inside of you
Not that I will not do all that I possibly can
Because your love makes me want to be that man

You laugh insisting this can be so easily done
After all, aren't I that type of special someone
To make your best dreams shape our reality
I'm completely undone by your faith in me

And so this is how our love goes as winter chills
I smile at your whispers and I love you echoed hills
And so this is how our first winter's wind chills
I will never let go at how wonderfully magic it all feels

If you're going to love, it is best to have a big love
The kind that makes the angels sing from high above
And as we approach hand in hand to this winter holiday
I smile and tell you that I wouldn't have it any other way
