Thought For the Day: Individualism, Love of Enterprise and Pride In Personal Freedom Are the Hallmarks of Americanism

“Individualism, the love of enterprise, and the pride in personal freedom, have been deemed by Americans not only as their choicest, but their peculiar and exclusive possessions.” – James Bryce (1838-1922)

First Principles: Of Those Who Have Overturned Republican Liberty, Most Have Begun By Courting the People and Ending Tyrants

“Of those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun their career by paying an obsequious court to the people, commencing demagogues and ending tyrants.” – Alexander Hamilton (1787)

In Gratitude for Community

A  poem in gratitude for community #14:

Bailey Family and Friends - Viking Boathouse

In Gratitude for Community
by Michael Romani

Thinking back on the days of birds singing
Always certain of what my life would be bringing
Dragon flies buzzing along a cool pond breeze
And lemonades shared under waterside shade trees

These vivid memories carry with them strong feelings
Of times spent with friends and send my head reeling
From the thoughts of simpler times filled with gratitude
I was happier then social ties given humble latitude

Always having time and being allowed to be my self
Be it sipping there with friends or reading from the shelf
Blessed as I was with that a multitude of connection
The community I grew up with helped shape my best direction

It's there I learned the ways of connection to my source
And finding my way through everything as a matter of course
I grew a strong sense of familiarity in that community
Where I grew up with good friends, time and my family

Walking In Thankfulness

A poem of thankfulness #13:

Aradia - Splash Stone Rocks

Walking In Thankfulness
by Michael Romani

There in the goodness that is the God-ness
That waltzes right past guilt into innocence
With the grammar of faith we talk our talk
Knowing that thankfully, we'll walk our walk

It's a prepositional thought of our place
When we think of finally meeting God face to face
It's there in the poetry and in the prose
Life as a love letter we might pre-suppose

So many points of light we hold in deference
Certain that the ways of God are our preference
Saved from the shame and pain of my own sin
Struggling back to repentance again and again

So very thankful that in my woeful needs
God saves me for His good purposes and deeds
Putting my hand firm on the heavenly plow
And somehow muddling through for the better somehow

I stand amazed looking into the mirror's glass
Knowing that my moment of doubts will move and pass
Grateful that He changed this taker into a giver
Holding fast to the truth of God as my forgiver

Life has proven that God's dwelling place is with man
And this very notion that helps me be the best I can
Having received the gift of God's redemptive salvation
It is with humble gratitude that I keep this in my contemplation

The Healing Acceptance of Self

A poem of humility and gratitude # 12:

Hamilton County Pt II 11102029

The Healing Acceptance of Self
by Michael Romani

With gratitude, I accept myself
No longer looking for answers from a shelf
But, seeking instead to find peace from within
Behind that wall of pride that is my sin

There is power in this new humility
Embracing the more subtle side of my humanity
Where the sands of time slip down the glass
As each of my memories come to pass

One by one, I am discarding my illusions
Like a fire burning above my confusion
These are the moments walked best alone
In the hallowed night down ancient cobblestone

With a cut of blade, I rage again with violence
As though a victim of my own enfeebled silence
So many questions will remain a divine mystery
As I humbly awake from my own sordid history

Finding that my truest self is the soul of my heart
That deepest within that has known Christ from the start
This is the place where my reality moves past pain
And leaves behind my tears that have fallen like rain

In the grand scheme of the truest mystery
All we think we know fades into divinity
Resting in this peace, I awaken to serenity
Where I find my comfort inside God's eternity

Thankful for the healing of my child within
I leave behind the past of love once felt when
I believed in the magic and warmth of family
Before too many dysfunctions had their way with me

But, now that I have begun to move past trauma
And am setting aside the hurts of self afflicted drama
Its these steps of the unfinished business of discovery
Which find me with grace, finding my way toward recovery

It seems my shadow as a repetition known as compulsion
It finds me drowning in the pain of needful absolution
This is the trap, you see, constant in all of humanity
Until at last we take our steps reaching with humility
