First Principles: The Governing Maxim In Interpreting the Law Is To Discover the Meaning of Those Who Made It

“The first and governing maxim in the interpretation of a statute is, to discover the meaning of those, who made it. The first rule, subservient to the principle of the governing maxim, is, to discover what the law was, before the statute was made.” – James Wilson

To Live and Die American

Flickr has broken my Flickr account.  Not sure what I will do for photographs now or if I’ll ever be able to retrieve them.  Meanwhile as I wait for their next response on the destruction they’ve done, I guess I’ll write poems putting “insert photo here” until I can actually insert my photos.

To Live and Die American
by Michael Romani

For most of my life I have lived in the belief
That our minds make up our happiness and grief
More than that there is the belief in our journey
Is one that is mostly defined by you and by me

Circumstances do not make the woman or the man
It is that internal that feels like eternal can
It's been my experience that we are learn to walk
Those things that others merely act on and talk

Are the difference that needs to be felt and made
Defying the blazing sun while others hide in the shade
Shaking our fists at the injustices of this planet
And making the best of things, however, we planned it

We who are American live by a code that is American
Uniquely lived in between birth and death as we can
Then we who are American die by code that is American
Distinguished in character lived and earned by every man

Those of us who are not too blind to see realize
All of the mistakes that happen before our eyes
We are not afraid to see things plainly for as they are
But, we do dare to dream and stake our claim to the stars

There are plenty of things in this world to correct
We don't have to search very far to know and detect
It is that willingness to fight another's man's fight
And to be unwilling to stand by when something isn't right

That makes us live and die, however we are, as American
To look back on our lives for the most part as we can
And know that in a world of kings we brought forward light
That illuminated freedom and sought Lady Justice's sight

The world at time despises us for many things
I can't say that sometimes it's what success brings
But, still while there is much left for the good to rearrange
I am proudly American and if we can let's keep this change

First Principles: It Is An Object of Primary Importance That Public Opinion Be Enlightened Through Education

“Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.” – George Washington, Farewell Address, 1796

Jackpot Rock Memory

Turns out that as I review, I also missed Day 20 of the Na/GloPoWriMo 2019.   This challenge was to write a poem based on slang.

Jackpot Rock Memory
by Michael Romani

Taking some comfort in some ono grinds
At the Zippys in Wahiawa's old town
We knew it was poho in this small world
But we were ohana and we didn't mind
Remembering back to the ole days we find
Happiness in the toes we once curled
Jumping off into the shallows of the Bay
This was the real school we graded from
Looking hapahaole I fit in like a glove
That is until someone liked beef or some
Other thing that offered less than love
I would remind them of Pu'u o Maukua's temple
Asking everyone to please just keep it simple
Hanging loose like a shaka full of howzit
And telling it just like it is a little bit
That it doesn't matter if you're white as shark bait
Life was and is too short for that kine hate
Offering a bite of malasada made for a lot of peace
Giving a sorta mellow way to simmer down and appease
Those were the sorts of memories as we talk story
Remembering the big waves and swan dive glory
Now they tell me that the Rock is mostly off limits
And I feel sorry for the sistahs and brahs who missed it

Empire State’s Eternity

I missed Day 24 of the Na/GloPoWriMo 2019.  The challenge that day was to pick a reference book and blindly choose something from any given page.  Having no reference  books currently handy, I turned to Wikipedia.  One of today’s featured entries was on the Empire State Building.  It reminded me of when I visited New York City to try to help a friend recover from illness.

Empire State's Eternity
by Michael Romani

I had gone to New York City
To comfort a friend gone ill
I remember feeling it was a pity
And I feel that way still

While I was there
I photographed the boroughs; all five
All hours of the day, everywhere
It was good to be alive

There in all captured in digital
Was an art deco significant tower
That had an impression beyond visual
Even in the evening's growing hour

Skyscraper in midtown Manhattan
An icon of the fabled Empire State
Moments there felt like satin
The fall of the North Tower sealed its fate

In homage, I climbed those stairs for me
But mostly for you as a challenge and a dare
Up close as I could get to the Observatory
That holds a panoramic view beyond compare

Its story holds a race into Gotham's sky
You laughed as you told me the way
And while its height is reborn, you had to die
Maybe that's why I chose to forget until today

It is one of those things lost in the mist
That you had always wanted me to see
Just one of those things that I would have missed
Were it not for the sake of your legacy

I remember looking up with a heart loss glance
Up onto the top of that lightning rod spire
And I was glad to get that last simple chance
To look down on this world feeling so inspired

Indiana limestone worn strong on the outside
With a bronze motif depicting our nation's industry
The Eighth Wonder of the World in its American pride
From its height, you and I looked deep into eternity

World of Poetry Haiku

Like the thud of a well earned door.. today is Na/GloPoWriMo Day 30 and like many good things, the month comes to its end.  Both in short order and short form (per the dictates of the challenge given).

First Principles: The Founders of America Intended Women To Have A Full and Co-Equal Voice In Our Government

“If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.” – Abigail Adams

Oddly, it’s become a little known fact that those responsible for securing these rights for women were the Republican party, not the Democrats.  Indeed, the Republicans had to force Democratic president Woodrow Wilson to grant these rights that were and are as God given as the rights of their male counterparts.
