The ABCDerian of Modern Life

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 19’s challenge is to write a ABCDerian.  Here’s my attempt:

Provincial Life - Family Matters

The ABCDerian of Modern Life
by Michael Romani

Alphabet soup served as
Breakfast that day
Cereal having been ate
Deliciously the other day
Edible as these are
Few can exist on this alone
Gone are the when nutrition
Hardly mattered as it does now
I don't want to seem preachy
Just have this something to say
Kids don't grow on words alone
Limited by the choices adults make
Maybe there's a better way to put this
No matter, we will find a way
Only to find someone found another
Perfectly pleasing if we surrender the moment
Quorum no longer really matters
Random members of the family
Show up any more with meals no longer together
This is just a symptom of modern times
Understandably so or so they tell me
Verily, I surrender without a fight
You understand how that goes
Zygotes have become babies who seemingly grow up overnight

Thought For the Day: Have A Blessed Good Friday!!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  – John 3:16 (NIV)

First Principles: Happy Patriots Day 2019!

“Don’t fire unless fired upon. But if they want a war let it begin here.” – Captain John Parker, commander of the militiamen at Lexington, Massachusetts, on sighting British troops on this day in 1775

The first shots of the Revolution were fired in response to a gun confiscation order… As some in our government seek to take our guns will we allow this transgression?

To Be Crucified

Based in part on Mark 14:43-15:20:

In His Name - Church of Divine Mercy - Crucifixion

To Be Crucified
by Michael Romani

Testimony no matter how persistent
Becomes question when it's inconsistent
Because of this we should speak plainly
When telling of the fulfillment of prophecy

So it was in the Messiah's final days
And so it should be in all of our ways
Let's not be the one who denies knowing
But be steadfast in our spiritual growing

Keeping faithful in all of our reverence
Despite the crowd's stated preference
Crucified as He was up on holy Calvary
This was the price paid for you and me

Jesus was alone in the gardens of Gethsemane
Fulfilling God's call alone in His sacred agony
Doing this to keep saved all of as His family
We will never walk alone in all of our sanctimony

The Son of Man was quietly betrayed by a kiss
And even so His heart in stillness did not resist
The trust felt in the hand that Jesus was dealt
Was a victory in disguise despite the sadness felt

The Son of Man was quietly betrayed by a kiss
And even so His heart in stillness did not resist
The trust felt in the hand that Jesus was dealt
Was a victory in disguise despite the sadness felt

All of those surrounding him were ready to fight
But Jesus spoke with love and truth healing with light
Surrendering to the cup from which He must drink
Giving the measure by which we should learn to think

In that moment in which the power of darkness reigned
Only the true and brave of heart would not be feigned
Creation destroying its maker as if the roles were reversed
Fully human and yet fully devine, His truth could not be feigned

In a series of trials, the High Priests failed heir law
Procedurally held in contempt of what the Mishnah recalls
God convicted in a series of injustices then carried out
Convicts us all as witnesses beyond all vanity and doubt

Answering truthfully that Jesus is the true Son of Man
Who would one day sit at God's side and in command
Outrageously spoken in all the truth of the Divine hour
This was the fine line of that would prove God's power

Like Dominoes Falling

On this the 18th day of Na/GloPoWriMo, the challenge is to write an elegy in which the sadness is based less on abstraction than concrete verbiage that helps a person feel the depth of sorrow felt.  To that degree, I have admittedly not stayed entirely on point.  I wrote one like that for my older sister when she died called Firefighter 54.  But today, I’m thinking of the time in my life when the 27 closest people in my life died within a fairly short time span.  I pray this never happens to anyone else, but, I’m sure it has. … worse, I am sure it will again.

No Man Is An Island - Swirled Galaxy

Like Dominoes Falling
by Michael Romani

One by one they fell
Like dominoes falling
It was my private hell
As each memory came calling

In that year and a half beyond belief
In all those moments boundless grief
Twenty seven of my closest people died
I cannot count the endless nights I cried

My mom, my dad, my sister and little brother
All them dying one after another
I felt as though I might implode
Of anger and grief as I watched my world explode

One foot after the other, I walked
It didn't help no matter how much I talked
My world was turned upside down
Each smile I wore was a secret crying frown

With a stiff upper lip I carried on
Trying to leave this behind and just go on
The weight I carried, carrying me on and on
Into a private abyss at the thought of them gone

My God-parents and my best, closest friends
Torn from my life as though without end
I cursed at God, the darkness and even me
Wondering what I had done to cause this severity

I needed someone to talk to but no one was there
I needed to be brave and yet knew only fear
Who might die next, I stopped letting people get close
I felt I was a pox with death's deadly dose

Falling into myself I talked less and less
Putting pen to paper, I became a poet...I guess
Whispering prayers into writing for no one to read
Until slowly, the steps came easier as I quietly grieved

It may seem that I feel helpless as I seek resilience
But, I have the stars above shining their brilliance
As time passes, I have learned to hold my head high
With a little more time, maybe, I'll forget how to cry

In Remembrance of Notre Dame

In memory of the burning of Notre Dame 04/2019 and as originally posted on my Flickr account:

Paris 1900 - Notre Dame - A Remembrance Of

In Remembrance of Notre Dame
by Michael Romani

Standing there in the center of the ancient city
Gloriously symbolic in its early beloved piety
The Cathedral stands as it has stood through ages
Figuratively and literally in all of France's pages
Central within the circles of European history
Relevant to the grandest and greatest mystery

She has stood the test of centuries in her regal moment
Towering about the foot soldiers as time's true testament
Encapsulating the best and worst of all of our humanity
Aspirational her flourish of imagination and grandiosity
One by one her steps of faith have been quietly taken
Even when burned down, broken and bitterly shaken

Notre Dame remains as to the pillar of France's soul
Down through the ages her resilience does extol
Like a sip of Champagne on this warmish Spring day
There is something in the immortality that won't fade away
Yesterday, today and for every certainty of tomorrow
She remains the bringer of dreams and forgiver of sorrow

I Am the Ocean

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 17 and the challenge is to write a poem from an unusual perspective.  What if a drop of water thought it was the ocean itself?…

Gentle Breeze - Breezes

I Am the Ocean
by Michael Romani

I am the ocean
I am the ocean
I am the ocean

The drop of saline water said
Unable to get it out of his head
I am and because I am I am all
His significance of place
He did not even slightly recall
But his pride he would gladly embrace

I am the ocean
I am the ocean
I am the ocean

I am the first and the last
I the future and the I am the past
The shape of every buoyant wave
The saline of every watery grave
I am all seeing and all knowing
I am all of this and ever flowing

I am the ocean
I am the ocean
I am the ocean

I am the alpha and omega of devotion
Every thought, feeling and emotion
And in being the all I am divinity
It's present in ever single trace of me
Before me all obstacles wash away
Warmly sung on every summer's day

I am the ocean
I am the ocean
I am the ocean

The ocean looks upon the tiny water drop
Smiling and respectfully asks him to stop
Are you all or just another bit of me
Open your eyes, it's very clear to see
You are not any wholeness of divinity
But just another drop in the cosmic sea

You are not the ocean
Just because you are wet
Your pride feels this devotion
But please never forget
You are no more the ocean in all of its might
Than I am the God of truth and light
