First Principles: Americans Would Rather Die Than Live As Slaves

“The ever memorable 19th of April gave a conclusive answer to the questions of American freedom. What think ye of Congress now? That day. . . evidenced that Americans would rather die than live slaves!”  – Mary Katherine Goddard

If you look really closely, this lady’s name is affixed to the bottom of the Declaration of Independence.  Throughout the American Revolution, this printer provided coverage of the events.  Let there be no doubt that if Ben Franklin favored her as postmaster and was impressed with her abilities, we too should be as well.

Hope In Love Becomes A Battlefield

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 22 challenges us to write a poem engaging another art form.  For me, it took but a moment to realize I would take on Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture.  Many reasons behind this I suppose, but, the largest of these are Princess 1 and Princess 2:

Hope In Love Becomes A Battlefield
by Michael Romani

Success can be a dangerous thing
It can take away the reasons
That we live and love and sing
Making us forget the many seasons

Of our lives that have passed by
That that make us so happy
With memories of ample supply
When love never needed a reason why

I remember that Spring day
Taking my little girls to see art
I still feel those feelings in every way
Showing them the designs of the heart

Encouraging the dreams they might dream
In numbers and sculptures of play
Where hope is LOVE and still it seems
Paint by number sequences don't get in the way

Slightly tilted, she played inside the O
Never fearing exile or letting go
Her older sister traced the patterns anew
Entranced by the Didone type in green, red and blue

We thought then that we had what we needed
I'll never forget the day their eyes pleaded
And my identity as Daddy was stripped away
Now I spend soulless nights without a word to say

That be must be a little how Robert Indiana felt
At the end of it all as his life had been dealt
Burnt down like an abandoned attic of memory
Standing in the shadow of almost anonymity

We eat; we drink; we casually live and die
Like a jilted American dream, we wonder why
The conflicts of life prophetically looming
Come so fast as to be apocalyptically dooming

All of my aspirations to be as a family man
Post-divorce now and doing all that I can
To keep my memories of LOVE alive
Feeling kind of homeless in dumpster dive

Played out in my mind like scattegories
Unsettled as can be in my once fixed categories
Once finding hope in LOVE but no longer
I can only pray their hearts are stronger

Toying With Reality

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 21’s challenge is to write a poem in a surrealistic manner.

Burning Man2 - Picnic On the Playa -Sakura Picnic On Top of the World

Toying With Reality
by Michael Romani

From the north looking down on the spinning top
The world twirls around and may never find its stop
All the fine artists sit toying with reality
Confusing the metaphysical in all of its surreality
For things that matter that are beyond the tatters
Of all the things that most often do shatter

Symbolic reservoirs of dreams float up into the surface
Ordinary objects blend into the not of a knowing preface
Saying more in their silence than said in a million years
Life lived beneath the surface of a thousand veiled tears
A million lurid faces make up the main entree's silver dish
Where gold is sold in flowers, insects and Swedish Fish

Dark corners of our psyche offer sacrifice in earthly delight
As stars assemble in Hollywood but cannot illuminate the night
The blind man sees in the key of distant yet resonant harmony
While the joyous woman finds herself locked into her melancholy
Visually puzzled lawyers probe the vapid subconscious mind
Never getting ahead by looking constantly and steadily behind

Somewhere there's a where where the top shelf is lost in lights
Believing the truth is seen better wading through the nights
Darkness holds its colors and white is that which remains unseen
All of this madly comprehensible in a world of shadowed dreams
It all remains ambiguous in that shimmering of identity
But if you ask me what it means, I'm afraid it's all been lost on me
