First Principles: Religious Liberty

Yesterday was the National Day of Prayer.  Because of this I took a little time off to do just that.  There can be no more worthy a pursuit than to pray and meditate on the state of the United States of America and pray for our political leaders along with the usual suspects in my continuing prayers including remaining family and friends.   Our republic is dependent on adherence to virtue and good principles.  These best met by doing as God ask us to do and not following our own lead in this dance of life.

As George Washington stated:

“To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian.  The signal Instances of providential Goodness which we have experienced and which have now almost crowned our labours with complete Success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of Gratitude and Piety  to the Supreme Author of all Good.

To have a better understanding of the commonality of Christianity among the founding fathers of the United States, a good starting point might be this article:

Equally, important as understanding the role of faith in guiding the morality of the Founders is that of keeping religious freedom alive today and active in the public square. Too many have tried to block just that and I find great hope in the actions so far of President Trump.

As Thomas Jefferson stated:

“I consider the government of the United States as interdicted by the Constitution from intermeddling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises.  This results not only from the provisions that no law shall be made respecting the establishment or free exercise of religion, but from that also that reserves to the States the powers not delegated to the United States.  Certainly, no power to prescribe any religious exercise or to assume authority in any religious discipline has been delegated to the General Government.  It must then rest with the States. “

The Obama Administration trampled these rights during its eight years in office.  Now, as it always seems to do, the societal pendulum that regulates going too far to the Left or Right in our governance is righting itself back toward a more moderate center.  This may be much to the chagrin of the hard Left, but, it is as our vigilance as a republic justly requires.

Yesterday served as a great reminder of this.
