Thought For the Day: The Voice of Opposition Should Not Be Silenced

“Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.”

–  Harry Truman, [Special Message to the Congress on the Internal Security of the United States, August 8, 1950]”

In the news, we hear a great deal about charging people with some sort of made up crimes for having dissenting opinions ranging from attorney generals who wish to file charges against those who do not believe science is settled to students who demand safe zones least they melt.  Reality check?  Both of these trends run counter to the First Amendment protections afforded all Americans.  Secondly, it’s only in allowing dissenting voices to be heard that we might resolve issues on the open market that is free speech.  Any other method is nothing but sheer repression and is as none American as it comes.  Free speech is an inalienable right given by God and not government.
