Sonic Gems – Stevie Ray Vaughn – The Sky Is Crying

The fifth and final studio album by Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble.  These previously unreleased songs were finalized and produced by Jimmie Vaughn in an effort to get the title track out to the public.  That should be all that needs to be said about why this album stands out as a heavy influence in the music world.  Still, maybe we should say this…

If you’re seeking an audio illustration of what formed Stevie’s varying influences, you could not ask for a better album to start with listening to find his roots.  On this album you’ll find Delta blues, Texas blues, Chicago blues, jump blues, jazz blues and even blues rock ala Jimi Hendrix.  From the uptempo to gritty slow blues, this is a sampler of classics that is a must hear.  The album includes the Grammy winning instrumental cover of Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix, Chitlins con Carne  for the jazzy slice, and Life By the Drop penned by Doyle Bramhall and played on 12-string guitar

There’s no question that the album fully merits it’s 10 out of 10.  In fact, I think I’ll go ahead and listen yet again. 🙂
