Time Spent With the Harvard Classics: Jataka Tales – Birth of Buddha
Although we at Aloha Promises Forever are unabashedly Christian in our paradigm, we also believe that we should understand and tolerate the perspectives of other world views. One of these is that of Buddhism. In that spirit and in keeping with the Harvard Classics, we are posting the following.
The Jakata Tales are Indian literature comprised of 547 poems which are each pertinent to the prior incantations of Gautama Buddha in human and animal form. Whether appearing as king, outcast, God or animal, each tale has the purpose of showing and teaching of a virtue we humans should emulate. In Theravada Buddhism, the Jatakas are a division of the Pali Canon as including in the Khuddaka Nikaya of the Sutta Pitaka. Jataka more or less roughly translates to commentary.
