Aloha Promises Forever has already discussed The Pilgrim’s Progress, particularly with respect to Part I and the life of John Bunyan. We urge you to review this material. The second part of this major work deals with the pilgrimage of Christian’s wife, Christiana, and their four sons and their wives, as well as the maiden, Mercy. As the visit the same places over a longer period of time, the hero of this part of the tale turns out to be the Interpreter’s servant, Great-Heart. As the guide to Celestial City, he kills four giants and the monster, Legion, who was busily terrorizing the city of Vanity Fair.
The greater length of this journey goes toward showing the many frailties and circumstances of life that arise and how Christians deal with such things. Along the way, we see that women as well as men can be and are heroes and good Christians. We also learn that Charity is the greatest of all virtues. In doing this, Bunyan has written perhaps one of the greatest of all Christian novels of all time.
