Sonic Gems: Lynyrd Skynyrd – Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd

Formed in 1964 as My Backyard, Lynrd Skynrd is an American Southern rock band that popularized that genre throughout the 1970s.  The band became famous for its live performances and the signature songs Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird.  A plane crash in 1977 put an end to their signature sound when singer Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines died.

The surviving band members reformed in 1987 with lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant at the helm.  They continue to tour today.   The band has sold over 28 million albums in the United States.  Lynrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006.

Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd debuted in 1973.  The album features the songs that put the band most on the path to stardom.  These include Gimme Three StepsSimple ManTuesday’s Gone and Free Bird.

For this band’s knack at three chord rock with a solid triple lead guitar attack particularly prominent in Free Bird, this will always remain one of the paramount Southern rock bands.  Aloha Promises gives this album a 10 out of 10.  The music may be a bit clunky, but, it says all that needs to be said.
