Born on October 11, 1936, Brazilian songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer Tom Ze formerly known as Antonio Jose Santana Martins was influential in the Tropicalia movement of 1960s Brazil. After a military crack down on this music, he went into obscurity and only returned to the limelight when David Byrne discovered an album of Ze’s and popularized it. Ze then returns to performing and released new material.
Among the new material was 1998’s Defeito de Fabricacao also known in English as Fabrication Defect. This concept album tells of Third World people turned into androids for economic exploitation by the first world. The problem is that these androids are defective and think, dance and dream. These defects are seen as dangerous to the overlords of the First World. This leads to an esthetics of plagiarism in which civilized trash and an alphabet of emotions invades the everyday world of the Third World.
Aloha Promises Forever rates this album a 10 out of 10.
