Decency
by Michael Doyle
You're a diamond
In a world of human coal
Because you know the worth
Of the human soul
Fragile and fallible as we are
We dream of living our dreams
Clinging to every falling star
Even as we're falling apart t our seams
Our dignity frayed at our strands
We fight without surrender
Making our last stands
Holding on to our splendor
Working hard to retain
Our semblance of decency
Helping others against the strain
In our modest propriety
You take your risks to face your fate
Struggling to get a gasp of air
Standing strong pretending to be sedate
You close your mind to the world's care
