First Principles: Nothing Was More To Be Desired Than That Every Practicable Obstacle Should Be Opposed To Cabal, Intrigue, and Corruption

“Nothing was more to be desired than that every practicable obstacle should be opposed to cabal, intrigue, and corruption. These most deadly adversaries of republican government might naturally have been expected to make their approaches from more than one querter, but chiefly from the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils. How could they better gratify this, than by raising a creature of their own to the chief magistracy of the Union? But the convention have guarded against all danger of this sort, with the most provident and judicious attention. They have not made the appointment of the President to depend on any preexisting bodies of men, who might be tampered with beforehand to prostitute their votes; but they have referred it in the first instance to an immediate act of the people of America, to be exerted in the choice of persons for the temporary and sole purpose of making the appointment. And they have excluded from eligibility to this trust, all those who from situation might be suspected of too great devotion to the President in office. No senator, representative, or other person holding a place of trust or profit under the United States, can be of the numbers of the electors. Thus without corrupting the body of the people, the immediate agents in the election will at least enter upon the task free from any sinister bias. Their transient existence, and their detached situation, already taken notice of, afford a satisfactory prospect of their continuing so, to the conclusion of it. The business of corruption, when it is to embrace so considerable a number of men, requires time as well as means. Nor would it be found easy suddenly to embark them, dispersed as they would be over thirteen States, in any combinations founded upon motives, which though they could not properly be denominated corrupt, might yet be of a nature to mislead them from their duty.” – Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers, No. 68, “The Mode of Electing the President (March 14, 1788)” speaking on the importance of the Electoral College

In Our Praise

Baja Coast 2022
In Our Praise
by Michael Doyle

The mercy shines bright
Strong in battle; setting things right
Jesus rules over us all
As in in His presence, we recall

That no one has this power
That the Lord brings every hour
Seated on His holy throne
Reigning over us as His own

Shining in His glory and majesty
We live under his sovereignty
Filled with blessings in gratitude
Growing in our right attitude

Raising our voices in songs of praise
Enough to fill all our days
With arms spread open wide
We revel in truth with nothing to hide

Swaying back and forth to the beat
We walk this holy street
Engaging each moment of our days
Living the love of the Lord in our praise

Thought for the Day: Courage Is the Price That Life Exacts For Granting Peace. The Soul That Knows It Not, Knows No Release From Little Things

“Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things.” – Amelia Earhart, aviator (24 Jul 1897-1937)

Dwelling Richly

Deer River - Spring 2022 - Happy Just To See You
Dwelling Richly
by Michael Doyle

Standing there caught amidst my sigh
I raise my hands up to the sky
Giving myself in prayerful conversation
In the truth of my greatest relation

In an echo of God's word, lived in my life
I turn further toward peace, away from strife
The journey traveled has taught me my name
Living each moment, loved in each as the same

A boy grown up to become this man
The Lord has taught me to be the best that I can
Life moves on in its sense of direction
The best of these being loving connection

The options we have are given by God's will
The secret is waiting for this to reveal
And to lean into the safety of God's given rails
That provide all the pertinent details

The peace of Christ brings us to wisdom
As we sing our worship in God's kingdom
Doing everything in Jesus's name, we learn to live
In His perfected love as we learn to forgive

Worry cannot live at God's holy address
As we put on peace; we put aside stress
The pages of scripture provide the release
That make life easier living in our peace

The Word of God shall clearly ring true
When taken in authentically in overview
It's not our place to edit His words
This dwelling of love becomes action verbs

As we put into practice in all of our days
All the reasons for why we praise
The embers of our hearts must burn true
In all the names of God, sung by me and you

In every note, within every song
We gather together in church where we belong
Singing our songs of honor in all we do
In the name of God, we will live true

In all things, we must live to honor God
In every situation, however seemingly odd
There are the patterns that shape our test
Let's put on God's ways to be our very best

Thinking and thanking land in their convention
While we trace life's journey in the right direction
There are no limits to God's holy ministry
That bring us in love through every misery

Stepping outside our singular sense of comfort zones
Toughened in our pores and poses to our bones
Throwing off the shackles we've put on ourselves
We rise up in faith beyond books on the shelves

Living each moment taught to us openly
Absorbing the promises given us infinitely
In living Christ's ways in all their mystery
We become as one with the truth of integrity

This then becomes our living ministry
As a open door to the living word of opportunity
We live our best moments used for God's purpose
In spreading the truth for God's best uses

Thought For the Day: There Are Two Kinds of Truth: the Truth That Lights the Way and the Truth That Warms The Heart. The First of These Is Science, and the Second is Art

“There are two kinds of truth: the truth that lights the way and the truth that warms the heart. The first of these is science, and the second is art. Neither is independent of the other or more important than the other. Without art, science would be as useless as a pair of high forceps in the hands of a plumber. Without science, art would become a crude mess of folklore and emotional quackery. The truth of art keeps science from becoming inhuman, and the truth of science keeps art from becoming ridiculous.” -Raymond Thornton Chandler, writer (23 Jul 1888-1959)

First Principles: Laws, To Be Just, Must Give A Reciprocation of Right; That, Without This, They Are Mere Arbitrary Rules of Conduct, Founded In Force

“We lay it down as a fundamental, that laws, to be just, must give a reciprocation of right; that, without this, they are mere arbitrary rules of conduct, founded in force, and not in conscience” – Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the state of Virginia, 1782

Raised Small Town

Old Town - Winterland - A Frame In the Snow
Raised Small Town
by Michael Doyle

I was raised all around this world, you see
Believing in America and our cherished liberty
Wherever it was that my family might be found
We stood up straight and chased truth around

Until we caught it by its length of tail
Knowing that merit and character are needed to prevail
And not giving much care to the color of skin
And where it was possible, letting the better person win

Wherever my feet were planted was a smile, not a frown
And I was raised upright; I was raised small town
We enjoyed the wandering that led to our short talks
But we learned to deal fairly and walk the right walk

To hear that it's somehow wrong to believe
In the principles by we which we came to conceive
This land and it's chances of equal opportunity
Seems to me to mostly be a matter of duplicity

Giving to our neighbors when we had a bit more
Everyone grew up rich in soul, even if poor
And that's the way this nation should always stand
I'm all-American, and I damn sure proud of my land

Wherever my feet were planted was a smile, not a frown
And I was raised upright; I was raised small town
We enjoyed the wandering that led to our short talks
But we learned to deal fairly and walk the right walk

And if someone was hell-bent on acting up and wrong
We would handle our business by being upright and strong
Never relenting and always believing in each other
Caring and loving the right way for one another

Sometimes we might live a little lean and rough
But we hung together and leaned in by being tough
Finding that we could get by giving shelter from the storms
And finding that living this kept our hearts warm

Wherever my feet were planted was a smile, not a frown
And I was raised upright; I was raised small town
We enjoyed the wandering that led to our short talks
Keeping our backs straight and walking the right walk
