First Principles: Honor, Justice, and Humanity, Forbid Us Tamely To Surrender That Freedom Which We Received From Our Gallant Ancestors

“Honor, justice, and humanity, forbid us tamely to surrender that freedom which we received from our gallant ancestors, and which our innocent posterity have a right to receive from us. We cannot endure the infamy and guilt of resigning succeeding generations to that wretchedness which inevitably awaits them if we basely entail hereditary bondage on them.” – Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of the Causes and Necessities of Taking Up Arms (1775)

Thought For the Day: If You Want To Build A Ship, Don’t Drum Up People Together To Collect Wood…Teach Them To Long For the Endless Immensity of the Sea

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery, author and aviator (29 Jun 1900-1944)

Daring To Live Different

Caillou Bouillon - Experience the Tides - The Crane and the Seagulls
Daring to Live Different
by Michael Doyle

As we learn to accept who we are
We set our eyes on the mother star
It's the urge to get back home
To the family, no longer alone

The heart breaks on the shore
But still we dare to search for more
As we try to learn lessons and imitate
All of the motivations we try to create

Life happens as it does and we wait
With only a few brave souls daring to escape
The hows and whys of changing style
In the names of the false gods we defile

Turning traditions for the sake of the one rock
That shapes and molds the incurious flock
We break the bonds to become the outcast
For daring to live different from the past

First Principles: Energy In the Executive Is A Leading Character In the Definition of Good Government

“Energy in the executive is a leading character in the definition of good government. It is essential to the protection of the community against foreign attacks; it is not less essential to the steady administration of the laws; to the protection of property against those irregular and high-handed combinations which sometimes interrupt the ordinary course of justice; to the security of liberty against the enterprises and assaults of ambition, of faction, and of anarchy.” – Alexander Hamilton (1788)

Consent of the Governed

The Village - Truth of Dining In A Socially Isolated World
Consent of the Governed
by Michael Doyle

As a people, our government transformed
When we could not be forcefully conformed
To a loss of rightful, popular sovereignty
This could not be allowed by our dignity

Unjust in his dictatorial set of actions
We, the Americans, demanded satisfaction
This planted the seeds of fundamental rights
Enduring today like a thousand lights

Natural law endows us with right reason
Reconciled with nature in all its seasons
Though our world is shifting yet again
These principles are needed to be protected again

With natural law violated in the public square
We must push back for just as we duly declare
The fundamental threshold is speech and petition
As we dig in deep with God in this repetition

Refining and enlarging through some revision
We find our rights and path closer to precision
To find our agreements through candid moderation
This then is for the good of our republican nation

This is native to the faith of the system conceived
To keep our nation enlightened and not deceived
By the demagoguery that is so falsely spoken
We must seek unity in correct ways again unbroken

In our declaration, there is reasoned justification
For the protection and the freedom of our nation
Set out, one-by-one, in its full-flow articulation
Our republicanism stands as its own ratification

Following the certain logic of what is moral
Through diverse views we remain together, yet plural
That path must duly lean toward reconciliation
With our first principles kept in our deliberation

This government is set up between mankind
With each having differing eyes that are not blind
This gives the ability to find workable governing ways
As the consent of the governed finds itself in different days

First Principles: True Law Is Right Reason In Agreement With Nature; It Is Of Universal Application

“True law is right reason in agreement with Nature; it is of universal application. Unchanging and everlasting; it summons to duty by its commands and averts from wrongdoing by its prohibitions” – Marcus Tullius Cicero

Thought For the Day: It Doesn’t Matter What You Look Like…What Does Matter Is the Size of Your Heart and the Strength of Your Character

“The lesson I want you to learn is it doesn’t matter what you look like. You can be tall or short or fat or thin or ugly or handsome, like your father, or you can be black or yellow or white – it doesn’t matter – what does matter is the size of your heart and the strength of your character.” – Fred Gwynne, in The Munsters
