Outside My Shadow (Happy Birthday Angie At 14)

A Voyage To Africa - Mangrove Shadows
Outside My Shadow (Happy Birthday Angie At 14)
by Michael Doyle

Has it been a life
Or some kind of a dream
It's hard to believe
That you're turning fourteen

14 years ago tomorrow
You first opened your eyes
Taking away my sorrow
And bringing a million surprises

They say you came a bit early
But who can really know these things
All I know is the joy that you've brought me
And the happiness that each day brings

At the joy of being your father
And at you and your sister being my daughters
I might have been richer but I'll never be poor
When you hold my hand, I couldn't ask for more

Here you are standing by my side
Growing into quite a young lady
All of your ways bringing me pride
As they have since you were but a baby

I still remember that day you turned
On the ultrasound to my side to say hello
And I see your brilliance in all you've learned
Blossoming as you from outside my shadow

It's hard to realize you must be your own
Instead of always under my overwhelming impression
I need to trust in you as you are nearly grown
This happy father treasures you and makes concession

That you are growing into the one of life's best
Treasured as you are with every beat of my heart
And I know your resilience will always pass the test
As you have from the very start

I still remember that day you turned
On the ultrasound to my side to say hello
And I see your brilliance in all you've learned
Blossoming as you have from outside my shadow

Thought For the Day: Although the Legal and Ethical Definitions of Right are the Antithesis of Each other, Most Writers…Confuse Power With Goodness, and Mistake Law For Justice

“Although the legal and ethical definitions of right are the antithesis of each other, most writers use them as synonyms. They confuse power with goodness, and mistake law for justice.” – Charles T. Sprading (1871-1959)

Thought For the Day: Readers May Be Amazed That We Have To Continue To Expand Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare Subsidies and the Like Because 12 Years Ago, We were Told That the Trillion-Dollar Affordable Care Act Was Going To Provide Universal Coverage

“Readers may be amazed that we have to continue to expand Medicare, Medicaid, ‘Obamacare’ subsidies and the like because 12 years ago, we were told that the trillion-dollar Affordable Care Act was going to provide universal coverage for everyone. But we keep spending hundreds of billions of tax dollars, and all we hear is how many millions of people continue to lack health care coverage. Maybe that is because all the money the authorities spend on health care makes the whole system way more expensive.” – Stephen Moore

Does anyone recall people like myself stating very clearly that the alleged universal healthcare of the Affordable Care Act was simply a ruse and would not work? Here we are 12 years later and the Democrats insist it’s not working and therefore government should grow again. What’s that adage about fooling once is the shame of the person running the con and if others are fooled again, it’s shame on them? We in America are living it.

First Principles: To Take From One…His Own Industry and That of His Fathers…Is To Violate Arbitrarily the First Principle of Association

“To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.” – Thomas Jefferson

Serious Loneliness

Serious Loneliness
by Michael Doyle

Singled out across the nation
Tripped up in social isolation
Attempts at conversation and vulnerability
Seem at times to be beyond our capability

Curtness played out with damages done
Meanness rounded before niceness begun
Seeking each other in loneliness we've seen
Only confirms that people can be mean

CQ calls sent out to be wished upon strangers
Though each of us are alerted to the dangers
We try to receive but instead push away
Hoping maybe tomorrow will bring its better day

With lights turned down perhaps too low
Neon flashes thrill with their empty glow
Lost up in the crystalline banality of a stranger's mind
It becomes harder to dream of what we might find

Loneliness leads only to more loneliness
And all the world seems to be turned amiss
Arming ourselves into extreme separation
We fall into the blurred disgrace of a lonely nation
