Slow Like A Mule

Blues and fusion offers it’s own kick of long solos filled with hot licks.  But in all of this, there is that groove and it punches slow like a mule.  No one threw those punches better than Betty Davis.

The Blues Station - V's 10th Rezz Day!! - Blues Heals the Soul

Slow Like A Mule
by Michael Doyle

A raven watches from atop a tree
The funk queen's rediscovered mystery
Critics speak in hushed tomes of reverence
As they expound on her vivid difference

She was born deep into the fear
Long before the enigma would disappear
Slapping it down into matched spaces
As every note found its right place

Though her music was inclusive
Her choice became to become reclusive
Disenchanted with the glaring starlight
Her heart kept raw on those steamy nights

Long legged boogie walked up the road
Offering more than her legends told
Neither presenting as polished or genteel
Her gift was found in keeping it real

Showing the full truth of self liberation
Her soul sacrifice was its own celebration
A loose goose bent on getting it on
She's gonna do it until her mojo is gone

Life lived heavier than deep
Her whiskey courage just wouldn't keep
Sirens ring out with the falling light
Betty Davis reigned as queen of the night

A Summer Breeze Calls

Situational haiku or maybe just something from the place I photographed today…

SL16B: Enchant - SecondHandTutti's Sweet 16 Dreams - Hand of the Butterfly

A Summer Breeze Calls
by Michael Doyle

A summer breeze calls
Passing joyfully today
Butterflies drift by

Dragonfly alights
Resting on a steady branch
Offering comfort

Goldfinch says hello
Singing its righteous sunshine
Today's lesson learned

War Changes A Man

While paying attention to something else, I started to think on PTSD.

The Empire Room -The Alone of Silence

War Changes A Man
by Michael Doyle

It came on without any warning
Half past two in the morning
And suddenly, it was show time
Landing hard like an emotional crime

Visited by ghosts of the war
Long ago past and hidden behind the door
Every time there was a loud noise
He was wading hip deep with the boys

At the sound of isolated backfire
He's back there crawling under trip wires
Of booby traps inside his mind
He knew he made it out, but, felt left behind

It seems that every loud sound
Finds him facedown on the ground
He had struggled hard to make it home
But most times, he just preferred to be alone

Thinking on how it is that every loud sound
Finds him face down and hugging the ground
They say war changes a man..
...He's just doing the very best he can

First Principles: If Individuals Be Not Influenced By Moral Principles; It Is In Vain To Look For Public Virtue

“If individuals be not influenced by moral principles; it is in vain to look for public virtue; it is, therefore, the duty of legislators to enforce, both by precept and example, the utility, as well as the necessity of a strict adherence to the rules of distributive justice.” – James Madison (1789)

The Moral Imagination

It is not enough to give to our children and our society definitions of right and wrong or normless stories and books leading to an inability to make the profound decisions needed for the better world we so desperately need.

The Moral Imagination
by Michael Doyle

We do our best that our children might learn
All the things needed that they must earn
When they are older so it will not depart
For all the good morals are home in their hearts

To train up is to teach the ways of nobility
That our children might act beyond banality
Forming their habits and all of their understanding
So that these ways will always be the ways commanding

All the goodness in the ways that they should go
Being upright in virtue so that they innately know
In knowing this in their souls they are reliable
Moving onward into life they will become fully capable

In learning and relearning actions of just quality
A virtuous character forms for accountability
Through this we find the cultivation of humanity
Tending the heart of virtue teaches beyond morality

This will not come through a heavy hand
But in a way that stirs the child to understand
Addressing the head and even the heart
Through tales of childhood that will never depart

It is not enough to know what is right
But it is needed to desire to do that right
Desire that is turned and churned in imagination
Therein lies the rub of this choice's fascination

Children should be brought up to love virtue
Keeping this in mind and in particular view
That they should be taught to hate vice
Knowing the difference between the bad and the nice

Heroes are given by way of illustration
So that children might know through emulation
A wardrobe of images that are as if it were
Cleanly cut in vision and not a passing blur

It is not enough to imagine what could be
We need to reach to know what should be
The moral components of ideals and possibility
Providing the light of our children's morality

This is the manner in which character is grown
Systematically ingrained by what is shown
Perhaps the most important part of an education
If we should wish for a better path for our nation

These are the rules and laws of our veritable game
The absence of understanding this holds the blame
That parents and teachers have this obligation
Is something that I'd think requires no explanation

The richness of experience defeats the poverty
Of a child's soul unfed to its fullest capacity
To learn that which is the social good
And that indeed must become completely understood

Let the things that are read and taught
Be those with high ideals as they must and ought
Let us put books on our children's shelves
That guide and encourage them to their best selves

Let us open young eyes beyond the surface
To the deeper truths meant to embrace
This is the something worth holding on to
That just might build a better world for me and you

Thought For the Day: Open Discussion of Many Major Public Questions Has For Some Time Now Been Taboo

“Open discussion of many major public questions has for some time now been taboo. We can’t open our mouths without being denounced as racists, misogynists, supremacists, imperialists or fascists. As for the media, they stand ready to trash anyone so designated.” – Saul Bellow (1915-2005)

First Principles: It Is the Manners and Spirit of A People Which Preserve A Republic In Vigor

“It is the manners and spirit of a people which preserve a republic in vigor. A degeneracy in these is a canker which soon eats to the heart of its laws and constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson (1781)

Wildness Into View

Another in the series on photography.  This one focuses on capturing animals and plants. There is so much to see in this fascinating world of ours.

Wildness Into View
by Michael Doyle

Staying hidden in order to see
Is the trick of wildlife photography
So the expert presents as he will say
But, if you're trying to hike, you don't have all day

Preplanned is always truly better
But most of us have to work around the weather
For the richness adjust the aperture priority
And the rest, as they say, will be history

Freezing the action with a high shutter speed
Will help shape the light as you need
Triggering into those levels of intimacy
While radio controlled photos will make you legendary

Animals can be photographed at the zoo
Which often affords a much closer view
It's all in an effort for conservancy
Remember patience is the key for wildlife photography

Flower shots are best taken in macro
The shallow depth of field allows for the flow
Sharp and crisp or smoothed into an impression
Remember to vary the subjects of your expression

Preplanning bring your best satisfaction
Doing your research will bring the most gratification
Of improving the odds of capturing the view
To capture your shots otherwise will be rare and few

Repeated access to your subjects travels well
To get the best photos, you'll eventually prevail
By using a variety of lenses in your opportunities
All of these are things that build memories

Telling the tales of habitats taken in place
Makes it more natural in their pleasant embrace
Pick your spot and wait for the right opportunity
You'll get the best photos by keeping your serenity

The best lesson given in all a photographer's days
Is to learn that patience and time truly pays
As with most things it's all about the connection
Well balanced comfort brings about its reception

Sacred Questions

How do we have the courage to ask the questions that must be asked?  We just do.. maybe?

African Modern Arts -Questionable Answers

Sacred Questions
by Michael Doyle

Searching for the courage needed
Listening to the inner voices, I've pleaded
To the one that asks the sacred questions
Doing as it does without hesitation

That secret "they" who do not identify
Themselves or when wrong rarely rectify
Demand of me that I know the unknown
Glorious it is to pretend it is plainly shown

But those answers we need seldom are
It matters little how I strum this guitar
Seeking to know that hard to find truth
But I know that I've mostly been lost since youth

This journey of mine has long since begun
The destiny was far enough as to almost outrun
My patience in its qualities dented if not shattered
As my life has moved on unexpectedly battered

All that which is truly approaching the wise
Has been seen before by much clearer eyes
Thousands of times and yet still I must ask
What is it before me that is my meaningful task?

All of these questions approached with experience
Sometimes escaped through my intention of deference
But never quite as complicated as it somehow seems
Here in my mind outside of my land of far dreams

Looking as I do searching through rooms of wisdom
Be it philosophical or from my Father's Holy Kingdom
There in the quantum field of my life's transmission
I find myself fully amidst yet another transformation
