For Those Beneath

Today is National Wreaths Across America Day, December 21, 2019… please remember in your thoughts and prayers, those who gave all that we might live free.   Thank you!

For Those Beneath
by Michael Romani

Sharing a bottle of mental whiskey
A shot for you; another for me
That is to say at least figuratively
Shared with those lying here silently

That no greater love can be given
Than to lay down lives that were driven
By lofty beliefs in those things greater
Believed before then or maybe later

Here on this shortest of days
And longest of cold, frigid nights
We come here to bear our witness
On this day of winter solstice

Having entered the arched gates
Like a trilithon pointed ever outward
In honor of those whose fates
Aimed so much higher and then toward

Heroes all, who now at peace lay beneath
As we reverently place each single wreath
By some who have borne the battle and others
Who simply recognize their fallen sisters and brothers

Sol Invictus falls to Yalda on this long night
While we know that our mortal prayers are heard
By He who stills the very breath of northern wind
Keeping dear the halcyon memories of lost friends

We lay the garland of strength at each headstone
In commemoration and in hopes that we might atone
For every Christmas that will now be amiss
As reveille sounds and with a salute we dismiss

Looking on the endless rows of evergreen rings
Hoping for such peace as these ceremonies by bring
There in the mix of pine and freshly scented flowers
Are the lost dreams remembered at this fallen hour

Symbol of victory of eternal life over death
These feeble gestures are all that we have left
In purity, these are held out as crowns of glory
Despite the tears and rage and never finished stories

LEA25: The Labyrinth Experience - Homeless Veteran Swept Aside

In America, 22 Veterans die by their own hand each day.  An ungodly number of Veterans sleep on the street homeless due to a number of reasons.  War does not end at the cessation of hostilities.  Sometimes in the heart and soul of those who served, it goes on as it replays on and on despite their best efforts to find peace.  Please remember the men and women who serve and have served our country during this holiday season.

Sweater Weather Dues

Originally meant for December 20th, National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day!

Sweater Weather Dues
by Michael Romani

Tell me now
Was it just a trick of the light
That led me somehow
To see things differently that night

They tell me it was only you
Dressed in an ugly Christmas sweater
And tell them that no one else will do
Or could have worn that sweater any better

Rudolph was very poorly knitted
But, I barely noticed you see
Because of how well he fitted
On the girl who is my destiny

I suppose holiday celebrations
Depend on the side of line you're on
But nothing could stop my anticipation
Of thoughts of that sweater being gone

I smiled deeply into your smiling eyes
In no judgment of your convention
Telling me that tacky bit should not surprise
It was just a part of your traditions

Toying with the cross I work on my neck
You smiled me into a much better mood
Until your touch nearly made me a nervous wreck
With the happiness and joy filling me up like food

Food of the soul that has it's best meaning
When we learn to truly see who each are
My sweater weather girl, always leaves me dreaming
Like melody strummed across the strings of my guitar

Ruined Absolution

This poem was meant for December 19, 2019.  This is, among other observances, National Emo Day.. So Happy that… In my own confessional, I am struggling a bit these last few days with my upcoming birthday, Christmas almost here and the resounding silence of the absence of my little girls echoing in my heart and mind to the point that it’s driven me to my knees in sorrow.  The darkness is closing in to the point where I can barely breathe. Sort of fitting for emo day right?  Anyhow

Ruined Absolution
by Michael Romani

From beneath the bangs
Of her long jet black hair
Her wanting smile hangs
As she tells me without care

Of how with her taste for ink
She's taking back her Sundays
Rather she should feel than think
Sinfully loving in a thousand ways

There is a structure in
The way life wears it thin
Given in emotional expression
In an escape from our compression

Some find it inspirational
I hear it borne as confessional
Tight tee shirts and skinny jeans
Worn in the angst of us human beings

The world becomes a beautiful place
When we're no longer afraid to embrace
The pain that hides behind our pride
Still taking it all in our best stride

Life it seems is a chemical romance
And I'm no longer afraid to die
Falling in love at a single glance
Do it or die, we'll never question why

Emotionally fraught and introspective
Seldom held anywhere near contemplative
Its the burn of hearts worn on sleeve hack
When tenderness leavens the sonic attack

Exchanging the sighs of yesterday's violins
In place of the pounding savage violence
We know that the nothing of something feels good
And that life will never be Hollywood

Thought For the Day: Christmas Is Not In the Outward Show but In the Inner Glow

“Christmas is not in tinsel and lights and outward show. The secret lies in an inner glow. It’s lighting a fire inside the heart. Good will and joy a vital part. It’s higher thought and a greater plan. It’s glorious dream in the soul of man.” – Wilferd Peterson

Thought For the Day: Christmas Is Not A Time Or A Season But A State of Mind

“To the American People: Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think on these things, there will be born in us a Savior and over us will shine a star sending its gleam of hope to the world.” ~ Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), American president. Presidential message (December 25, 1927).” – Calvin Coolidge
