Lechon Americano

Happy Roast Suckling Pig Day!!

Lechon Americano
by Michael Romani

Sipping down a San Miguel
You with your port and ale
Thinking back on yesterday
So many memories seem throwaway

I was three or maybe four
And while the Philippines seem a closed door
There is at least one happy memory
Unless my mind is deceiving me

My story rambled to you, my senorita
My father was stationed at Mt. Santa Rita
And to my family's relief
Had worked his way up to becoming Chief

All of his men threw a huge celebration
In honor of his hard work and inspiration
The centerpiece would be the national dish Lechon
There would be two of these to feast on

What a sight the roasted pig was to see
That is until it dawned on me
This was nothing more than a baby
Who, pig or not, was torn from its family

And that the laid a apple in the mouth
Bathed in sauces and spices baked as these ran South
I have to admit that I truly loved the taste
Yet, it hasn't escaped me, life was lost in such a haste

Man after man offered my father a well meant toast
As I stood there thinking about our poor roast
And while life has turned many a page
It still sits wrong with me that the roasts were center stage

I suppose it's a bit of moral hypocrisy
As I loved the crisp skin and bits so greasy
Funny how these images still make me uneasy
Especially with two little girls as my family

Dreams Taken Wing

Happy National Wright Brothers Day!

Dreams Taken Wing
by Michael Romani

Dreams taken wing
In that godlike machine
Soaring into heights
High above the lights

There the Brothers Wright
Took their token flight
Drifting slightly in elevation
High as heavens felt in meditation

As gentle then as a touch of sky
Orville's wings knew to fly
There in the fluff of sky's ocean
In pursuit of dreams pure devotion

Though not the first
To know this magical thirst
They were first to make possible
The future of flight more probable

Barbie and Barney Backlash

It’s quite like me to pedal as fast as I can and still be a day behind and several dollars short.  But that’s not going to stop me from living my days to their fullest.  Yesterday, as it turns out was/is Barbie and Barney Backlash Day??  I mean !!  Of course that’s what I meant….. yay and stuff.. anyone?  I’ll just be over here munching on my newly discovered sweet potato tortilla chips and pretending to my utmost that they’re good for me… (well, they are very uniquely tasting especially with Mexican cheese (Queso Blanco) on them)…

Barbie and Barney Backlash
by Michael Romani

It's a Malibu splash
Bit of a sand dash
Nothing like a snide bash
Barbie's feeling her backlash

It doesn't escape detection
All that plasticine perfection
It's in need of correction
As it doesn't hold up to inspection

Striking my last frayed nerve
As she strikes and holds her pose
A bit of a backhand serve
In her accessorized clothes

Even Mr. Ken Carson
Contemplates a bit of arson
Since escaping from Mattel
Hiding out in his hotel

All to get himself a bit of space
From the thousand photos taken
Feeling more than a bit shaken
By her ever present posterized face

Barbara Millicient
The epitome of magnificent
Miss Roberts you do inspire
Setting this world on fire

Until it wants to return the favor
As all the 'normal' girls savor
The idea that they are they're own beauty
There's not just one kind of cutie

And sure, Ken says, I love you
And I know that you love me
The box we got our home from says so
But really, I just have to let you know

That no purple dinosaur is family
Sorry to tell you that about Barney
And while Ken's attuned with kindness
He is not taken in or subject to blindness

Not one size will ever fit all
Even in the shape of idealized doll
You'll have to pardon me as I need to dash
Out these last words of the Barbie bash

Commit Freedom To Memory

Yesterday, December 15, 2019, was Bill of Rights Day!  I was semi-astonished when I didn’t find anyone making reference to this.   I was busily recovering from a long walk without a coat taken on Saturday.   By the way, there are some photos of that on my Flickr account should anyone care to see number 11 out of 11 of Indiana State Historic Sites photographed this past year….

Commit Freedom To Memory
by Michael Romani

December 15, 1791
The Bill of Rights
In its guarantee begun
To strike a pose of lights

Not a place in this world
Has failed to feel it's influence
With freedom's flag unfurled
God's truth found its confluence

Establishing the People
As overseers of government
Our birth right under the steeple
Natural law embodied as the Lord meant

Fundamental principles to live by
Never blurred in their distinction
But rules by which we breath and die
Without which is our nation's extinction

There are limits to power
That we might live under rule of law
American sentiments in our finest hour
Each of these worthy of recall

Commit these to memory
And then we can begin
To acknowledge God in our history
From time to time, now and then

Ode To An Orangutan In My Thoughts

Friday was the Day of the Monkey.  This brought to mind a certain event that happened maybe 12 or more years ago.  I could not fact any references to this orangutan on the net so I could not completely flesh out this memory.  But, there’s not a day that I don’t remember this meeting and this question of why and how we could ever do something so heartless to an animal we had professed to love when she was a baby.

Ode To An Orangutan In My Thoughts
by Michael Romani

In the days of my childhood
Not to seem trite, but, it was understood
That there would be a common good
If we could talk with animals we knew
Not just in Doctor Doolittle's Hollywood
But, something more real and true

As a young man watching Cousteau on TV
It seemed a practical dream of our biology
Almost as if an intervention into humanity
As though we might be closer to divinity
That is, of course, until watching Planet of the Apes
As a series and then quietly putting away my capes

No longer convinced we were super let alone supermen
But that the dividing line wore ultra thin
Watching from the distance as we taught ASL
To Koko and others whose words still reveal
That we humans aren't the only ones with a soul
It left me wondering how the world is in our control

Day to day life seemed to get in the way
And as time drifted on, I found other things to say
Still memories of surfing dolphins at Chinaman's Hat
Kept in mind all of the world's niches as that
It seemed to me that other animals to indeed talk
And we humans have stopped listening; thick as rocks

Forty years on at some half forgotten Ohio zoo
I met an orangutan, more human than me and you
She was locked in a cage by herself as one
Trapped between raised as human; the damage was done
Her humans wouldn't keep her out of their base fear
And her kind didn't want her not anywhere near

I read her sad story for what it might just tell
Our beastly inhumanity is what it seemly revealed
To raise one up and the sell her out of convenience
Was less than pristine and lacking in brilliance
She was not responsible for being that step between
And the truth is, she didn't know what it means

There was a look of loneliness in her sweet eyes
Deeper than the incisor cuts hidden by disguise
Her soul seemed to reach out and into mine
Maybe it was a shared experience we couldn't define
That at the glass we stood eye to eye, hand to hand
Both of us knowing what others pretend to understand

Her hurt and feeling so intensely scared and lost
My heart pounding, breaking at man's folly's cost
We stood there palm to palm as if kin to kin
Each of us disguised by the thin veneer of our skin
Her heart calling out, "do not leave me, I am lonely"
Myself having felt my own pain deep inside of me

Her eyes called out filled with grace and deep beauty
But, I had to go as it was my lot and human duty
Swearing aloud that I would come back once again
I have not seen her in person; not since then
But in my mind and in my soul, I question why
And my tears are my only reply
