First Principles: Officeholders Are the Agents of the People, Not Their Masters

“Officeholders are the agents of the people, not their masters. Not only is their time and labor due to the government, but they should scrupulously avoid in their political action, as well as in the discharge of their official duty, offending by a display of obtrusive partisanship their neighbors who have relations with them as public officials.” – Grover Cleveland

Music of the Night

Halloween Poem #20:

Nightmare At the Park - Promises of a Howling Good Time

Music of the Night
by Michael Romani

Creatures of the night
Make such music don't they?
Listen closely until first light
To the things that make the undead happy

The vampire lord finds love tragic
As it has lost all of its magic
The choices made along the way
Are choices of the night and not the day

The changes made are spoken in voice
But come from forces beyond our choice
Joined as if one in our shared destiny
Dracula holds this out as his legacy

With the glowing of the moon
The Wolfens grow in power soon
Howling mad as one with savagery
They will fight on until sweet victory

First Principles: We Cannot Make Financial Matters Right By Taking From One What He Has Honestly Acquired To Give to Another Who Has Not Earned

“The indiscriminate denunciation of the rich is mischievous…. No poor man was ever made richer or happier by it. It is quite as illogical to despise a man because he is rich as because he is poor. Not what a man has, but what he is, settles his class. We can not right matters by taking from one what he has honestly acquired to bestow upon another what he has not earned.” – Benjamin Harrison

We Who Damn Ourselves

Halloween Poem #19:

Bay City - Expresso Yourself

We Who Damn Ourselves
by Michael Romani

We damn ourselves
To our own private hells
Dwelling on all
Of the tiniest details

In a world grown cold
We lose all hope
All of our dreams bought and sold
We're hanging on to the end of our ropes

The price to pay
When we've come to the ends of days
And we've found no other way
Is learning, forgiveness proves elusive

It seems to easy
To be our own monsters
Reaching always for the contrary
Of all the evidence seen

It's the undeserved mercy
That we cling to
Though it seems such a heresy
To all that we've been through

All our evil is too hard to ignore
Yet, we find our desperate way
Begging eyes speak seeking to implore
When we have no words worthy to say

Darkness Quenches Light

Halloween Poem #18

Salem - Bewitching Hour

Darkness Quenches Light
by Michael Romani

Among the demons there is history
Some might strangely call it legacy
Where troubled hearts are in need of friends
And if you're safe, it just depends

Quintessential in the rarified transformation
Are the missing vital parts held in summation
That man tends to stubbornly do the opposite
Than that which is needed for the most of it

It being those things that might hurt pride
But like whiskey, burns from the inside
Thunder claps in spite of its tragic irony
That even those mad follow their own melody

There in the twisted bits of calculated intention
Are the lost souls of science's worse invention
That vital spark found in primitive electricity
Soothes the heart in all of its splendid savagery

The sum and part of one's last and ending days
Is no more or less than our hidden, darkest ways
Loathing the monster in each of us and in vain
It's those bleeding moments spilled down the drain

Seeking to find some way to take away the pain
In a cracked world where no one is quite sane
There are some wounds that never cure or heal
The scars needed to exist and be revealed

It's said that sacred love can yet conquer all
But these words were only true before Eden's fall
Tears burst into a cold winded, bitter night
It's the final darkness that quenches out the light
