Webster’s Calling

At one time, Noah Webster called for a unifying national language of American English.  On learning that the English were buying his dictionary, he decided instead it was a better thing to recognize that English is English with more in common on both sides of the ocean than different.  Apparently, English money spends just as well as the dollar?  Who would have thought it, right?

Split Screen Installation - Downpour of Words Just Waiting To Form

Webster's Calling
by Michael Romani

In America's first days
Of independence and liberty
Noah sought in his linguistic way
To help foment our national unity

In a heated call for clarification
He presented his bold dissertation
That to prevent an elite in our nation
There would be no language differentiation

Having learned just how quickly
English dialects formed sounding prickly
Noah Webster sought to keep original construction
In order to avoid American English's destruction

Making his efforts stridently impressive
He sought to keep our words clear and expressive
Reforming the complications of pronunciation
Noah set out his genial and needed elucidation

He banished local dialect for common stock
As he insisted on a standard way to write and talk
And while he never assumed dictatorial authority
He did his best to set out rules of language and civility

First Principles: America Was Meant To Unify In Establishing American English As Our National Language

“NOW is the time, and this the country, in which we may expect changes favorable to language . . . . Let us then seize the present moment, and establish a national language, as well as a national government.” – Noah Webster

Thought For the Day: Nothing In the World Can Replace Persistence

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge

Falling Up

They say that opposites, often attract.  Maybe that’s so?

Garden of Whimsy Christmas Hunt - Fork In the Road Considered

Falling Up
by Michael Romani

Two souls separated at birth
Filled with hope well worth
Falling up to rise down
Love leaves both feet on the ground

Secrets passed down in family
Are the sages tale of tall homilies
Climbing above the cloud line and higher
And there you find your true desire

Two worlds managing to somehow collide
Finding their way beyond pride
Two hearts coming together
In the forever way of worse or better

To go anywhere and nowhere would do
Laughter keeps the gravity in view
Even where those who hate the different
Hold out fear as something reverent

Momentary images keep dreams alive
Even when reality says these should not survive
It is these things we still hold onto
Like the world of me finding my way to you

First Principles: Our Constitution Was Made For A Moral and Religious People and Is Inadequate To Govern Otherwise

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” – John Adams, Address to the Military (10/11/1798)

Fortune Cookie’s End

At the end of many an Oriental meal, there is that tidbit of sweetness and fortune told.   My last one reads,” (D)o not wish to be anything but what you are and try to be that perfectly”.  … and so I will…

Ascension - Light Saber Pick Up Sticks

Fortune Cookie's End
by Michael Romani

Intricate isn't it
How each part has its place
Snuggly in tune to fit
Warm in its embrace

Simple it is
Yet, complicated
It is what it is
Awesomely fated

Its practical chemistry
Delicious in its taste
Cherished in its intimacy
Enjoyed without haste

Tempura on cheese cake
With sprinkles on top
More than my stomach can take
But, until the end I won't stop

This moment lived has its poetry
The fortune cookie tells me all
When it says to be me perfectly
A lesson I'll try to remember and always recall

Thought For the Day: Generally, Societies Flourish and Decline To the Degree These Exercise the Duties of Justice and Humanity

“As a general truth, communities prosper and flourish, or droop and decline, in just the degree that they practise or neglect to practise the primary duties of justice and humanity.” – William Henry Seward, Secretary of State, Governor, and Senator (16 May 1801-1872)

First Principles: Matters of Faith Must Be Left To the Conviction and Conscience of Every Person

“Because we hold it for a fundamental and undeniable truth, “that religion or the duty which we owe to our Creator and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence.” The Religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man; and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate. This right is in its nature an unalienable right. It is unalienable, because the opinions of men, depending only on the evidence contemplated by their own minds cannot follow the dictates of other men: It is unalienable also, because what is here a right towards men, is a duty towards the Creator. It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage and such only as he believes to be acceptable to him. This duty is precedent, both in order of time and in degree of obligation, to the claims of Civil Society. Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governour of the Universe: And if a member of Civil Society, do it with a saving of his allegiance to the Universal Sovereign. We maintain therefore that in matters of Religion, no man’s right is abridged by the institution of Civil Society and that Religion is wholly exempt from its cognizance. True it is, that no other rule exists, by which any question which may divide a Society, can be ultimately determined, but the will of the majority; but it is also true that the majority may trespass on the rights of the minority.” – James Madison, in Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments (1785)

Meant To Savor

Does anyone else here really love sushi?  Silly question?

The Waterfall Cafe - A Discussion of Splitting Sushi

Meant To Savor
by Michael Romani

Two parts
One part art
And presentation
The other
That of flavor
Memories of the heart
The secret part
Both memory and fascination
Each reminding of the other
Each part that I savor

Vinegar rice
And bits of fish
Banded with seaweed
Blended in flavor
An occasional special treat
Bamboo flute adds to ambience
For this Japanese dish
A special treat I need
To enjoy and savor
It keeps me up on my feet

Letting me know somehow
That I will survive
All of life's harsh cruelty
All that keep coming my way
A moment that I can relax in
Holding close to all memories now
Of struggling just to keep alive
Remembering the day life lost its novelty
And all the days leading to today
Knowing that now I am ready again

To believe in things like new love
To believe again that life is right
Each bite of sushi serves to remind me
Of better times once and those to come
All of this meant to savor
As I live my prayer to the above
I keep these thoughts and you in sight
Keeping in mind both love and duty
Holding to my best and then some
All of this truly meant to savor
