The Price of Magic

Day 26 of Na/GloPoWriMo 2019 is day to write a poem that uses repetition as it’s device.  I think maybe that’s something that I don’t do a lot of in my writing.  The leaders of this poetry session declare this as a way of sealing in a reader’s interest.  I suppose song lyrics support that premise.  Then I think of the thousands of years of successful poetry that doesn’t use this and suddenly, I’m okay with my poems again.  .. Just sayin’

The Price of Magic
by Michael Romani

Some things are trite and trivial
Other things seem best in serial
When these things bear repeating
However deep in their seating
We find ourselves baring that repeating
Knowing all our time is simply fleeting
Every use of magic has its price
Used magic has its price
Regardless of device
Every use of magic has its price

There in the essence of every incantation
Properly influencing every recitation
There in every word of every utterance
Whether dashed in fancy or in governance
We find ourselves baring that repeating
Knowing all our time is simply fleeting
Every use of magic has its price
Used magic has its price
Regardless of device
Every use of magic has its price

In every bit of human interaction
There lies a base need for satisfaction
Be it one of parliamentary parlance
Or the heart's desire for true romance
We find ourselves baring that repeating
Knowing all of our time is simply fleeting
Every use of magic has its price
Used magic has its price
Regardless of device
Every use of magic has its price

Life's cocktail carries the kick of complexity
Played out best doubled handed with dexterity
But in the end we find the die is cast
In knowing that even magic doesn't last
We find ourselves baring that repeating
Knowing all of our time is simply fleeting
Every use of magic has its price
Used magic has its price
Regardless of device
Every use of magic has its price

First Principles: A Corrupt Press Deceives, Inflames, Dishonors Virtue, Stokes the Flames of Faction and Ends Its Own Enemy

“We are, heart and soul, friends to the freedom of the press. It is however, the prostituted companion of liberty, and somehow or other, we know not how, its efficient auxiliary. It follows the substance like its shade; but while a man walks erect, he may observe that his shadow is almost always in the dirt. It corrupts, it deceives, it inflames. It strips virtue of her honors, and lends to faction its wildfire and its poisoned arms, and in the end is its own enemy and the usurper’s ally.” – Fisher Ames (1807)

Thought For the Day: The Self Congratulating Media Are Shocking In Their Self Aggrandizing Behavior That Will Haunt Journalism For A Long Time Coming

“It’s shocking to see national media voices after the release of Robert Mueller’s report patting each other on the back, congratulating themselves for a three-year faceplant they must know will haunt the whole business for a long time.” – Matt Taibbi, Rolling Stone

“You know what was fake news? Most of the Russiagate story. There was no Trump-Russia conspiracy, that thing we just spent three years chasing. The Mueller Report is crystal clear on this.”

Read more and learn if it’s not obvious to you by now.   The world was duped by folks trying to take down a legitimately elected president.  The way you take down someone who wins that you don’t like in electoral based government is wait until the next election and win.  Otherwise, the ideas you support lead to what used to be known as a Banana Republic filled with juntas and justice for no one at all.

Summer, Newport Beach

Na/GloPoWriMo 2019, Day 25 and the challenge is to write a poem that incorporates:

  • Is specific to a season
  • Uses imagery that relates to all five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell)
  • Includes a rhetorical question, (like Keats’ “where are the songs of spring?”)

Summer, Newport Beach
by Michael Romani

It was summer and I was happy to be young and free
A cool breeze ocean child busily surfing and being me
Back on the shoreline we would watch them tan and lay
Running back and forth from ocean's break we'd watch them play

You had your eyes on a million beautiful ladies
I always thought that was more than just a bit shady
After we paddled in, we'd over to Balboa Pier
We thought of it as the Zoo filled with laughter no fear

Bain de Soleil and St Tropez had a science that didn't lie
We got a contact high just from all the girls walking by
As we waited and the remnants of salt water casually dried
We smelled the fish from the mongers as they let it slide

Your dad owning that little beach house right on the beach
Kept the crashing waves echoing and just within our reach
No matter how hot the day, there was always the night breeze
We had to go to the park if we wanted to play among the trees

It was impossible to say whether the waves touched me or I
Touched the waves as we surfed together never questioning why
We needed to nearly always be in the water during the day
And then in night we'd find a fire pit somewhere along the way

They moved those later down to Huntington Beach as I recall
But we'll always remember the crabs we chased feeling giant tall
As our shadows caused them to flee under the jetty rocks
But most of all what I remember are the endless times we'd talk

Whatever happened to those days, cousin of mine?
Whatever happened to the days of forever sunshine?
Whatever happened to two boys like soul brothers?
Is this what growing up and then older looks like for others?

Thought For the Day: Poetry Is A Light By Which We See Life

“In the end, the poem is not a thing we see; it is, rather, a light by which we may see–and what we see is life.” – Robert Penn Warren, novelist and poet (24 Apr 1905-1989)

Kermode White In Blues

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 23 sets out a challenge to write a poem about an animal or animals:

Kermode White In Blues
by Michael Romani

Two white tigers, not in biology
More in a thing of Chinese astrology
Set about that day in walking
And as they were they were talking
Viewing animals enclosed in human cages
Remembering storied half forgotten pages
Happily they laughed as they were strolling
Caught up remembering yesterdays flowing
Pointing out the bellowing hippopotamuses
With their gianormous dancing rumpasses
The Ghost Bears were not a tale of haunting
But rather one of endlessly wanting
Just a little bit of forest to call their own
Where a little dignity they would be left alone
Raven flew overhead wishing in her trickery
That the rainforest might provide sanctuary
The first tiger turned to her significant other
And wondered aloud if like cheetahs and another
Species or two, these bears might be magic
And their losses a bit too too tragic
The second tiger held her paw like hand
Then her closer whispering of a land
Long ago the Kitasoo tell in their ancient tale
Raven was a creator of greenery where life would dwell
And in these places she placed fish and the berry
So that all life could live well and not just barely
In a land of plenty that served as quite the habitat
If only it might be that mankind might imagine that
And allow all life to have its niche and place
There could be balance we might all learn to embrace
Instead it's only in the Douglass Channel that we find
The Home of the White Bear may become a memory behind
A legend of half such a memory for our human family
When greed one day destroys Gribbell Island's legacy
