First Principles: For My Part, Whatever Anguish of Spirit It Might Cost, I Am Willing To Know the Whole Truth; To Know the Worst, and To Provide For It

“It is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth – and listen to the song of that syren, till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those, who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it might cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.” – Patrick Henry (1775)

Scrambling On God’s Path

La Vallée - Lighted Archway On A Cobblestone Path
Scrambling On God's Path
by Michael Doyle

It was a Sunday morning scramble
When with his words at a ramble
The minister began to tell his tale
Hoping somehow the truth will prevail

Hoping to bring his congregation
Closer to the heart of God in aggregation
God's grace is rich with its mercy
To suggest anything else is heresy

Making a field of dreams from a hay field
To find the message he wanted to yield
Daniel was chosen to be a shining example
Of a man whose character proved ample

In Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar was a king
Seeking the truth to always bring
The best of truth along the way
Daniel chose God's words for his truth to say

God of gods and revealer of all mystery
In this tale are the seeds of humility
There's enough faith to believe in "but if not"
It's a moral imperative to never be forgot

Pulling miracles out of the proverbial nowhere
In aspiration to keep hope and belief clear
Like Daniel in the furnace, faith will not burn
And from this there are many lessons to discern

Failing to honor God brings us to something less
Brought into our lives by choosing to be careless
Pride comes before the fall of that unholy trinity
Of me, myself, and I; it's the way of all history

Each of us has a divine calling to reach for and fulfill
We find it's best when we serve that which is God's will
It's the kernels of truth revealed in conversation
That will bring us forward to our final destination

Stopping at the crossroads to take a look around
It's where are dreams are yet to be truly found
Putting our feet to the path of this long journey
One step at a time will bring us our best destiny

The true God brings us toward worship of Jesus
Instead of allowing us to do for us whatever pleases
Digging into knowing the truths of our limitations
And asking for help instead of dwelling in lamentations

First Principles: No People Will Tamely Surrender Their Liberties, Nor Can Any Be Easily Subdued, When Knowledge is Diffused and Virtue Is Preserved

“No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.” -Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren, 1775

Circling Around Symmetry

80Days - Krayentanz
Circling Around Symmetry
by Michael Doyle

Like a wanderer of lost moments
I find myself with ghosts in memory
Circling around the torments
To sharpened to find the symmetry

Needed to find balance in the crawl out
In the long kiss good night
In a gathering of kings filled with doubts
Fool's gold shines maybe a bit too bright

I fear the unbreakable siren's calling
Overheard as I feel myself falling
Tumbling into the depths that are churning
With the lessons I keep relearning

There in conversations edited for clarity
Are the thoughts expressed in their sincerity
In a world that needs to keep turning steadily
An improvisation expresses itself readily

A story based on child's play becomes reprieve
From the symptomatic isolation we seek to relieve
What is it that we keep seeking to maybe find
Is it ourselves that we wish to leave behind?

Like delicate balloons seeking a sense of community
Innocent in the exchange, yet hoping for that reality
In the first contact there is an air of odd tension
While we turn to the other looking for our attention

A strain of cynicism seeps from two years isolation
No longer certain of any pretense of our destination
Being known, hopelessly shown, with our covers blown
Touching on the edges we come to learn how we have grown

Counting the steps of each such otherwise minor moment
We awaken to the magic but also to the strained torment
Revealed as they are in the deep truths of vulnerability
Repressed emotions seek to engage without the capability

Tech Resistance

Vintage Computer Museum
Tech Resistance
by Michael Doyle

Technology seems to hate me
I know it by its glow
Like a worn button toggled
The Hell of it begins to show

Machines and things are against us
I know this for certain, just because
Some may say life is getting easier
I say it just spins by a little breezier

In every close sort of way
Technology grows very day
Too close for comfort as it integrates
E-gads! We suffer self-inflicted fates

Phones that spontaneously reboot
Computer crashes that contribute
To the unsaved changes
And bugs in code that rearrange

I don't want to be an incessant raver
But is it really a time saver
When it becomes a struggle for domination
Short of a battery failure; it's a senseless fascination

In recording our lives, instead of living
Maybe our grandchildren will be more forgiving
Then the nostalgic moments that linger
When our HD experience is always under finger

We have become ungrateful in this competition
It's an endless race run for meager reputation
Fanboys and fangirls rave for the backwards compatible
Sucking it up in what seems the readily contemptible

And while you'd think we'd not become this lazy
Thinking tech would make us smarter was maybe crazy
It's certainly given us more time to spend and think
But instead we use this time to vegetate and drink
