Venice – Piazza San Marco

Venice, Italy is one of the beautiful and historical places in the world that we could all use some familiarity.   This is a look at Piazza San Marco.

Ginos Ristorante -What Good Is A Window Table For One

Venice - Piazza San Marco
by Michael Doyle

Through the Bacino di San Marco we arrive
We start our journey through columns come alive
In a welcome familiar through the centuries
This speaks to us of their storied history

One of St Mark and the other of St Theodore
As a perfection of theft and just a bit more
Patron saints memorialized as Venice would do
Close enough to the gates of Heaven for me and you

Games of chance and with a focus of execution
Connected by words of well spoken elocution
The Doge's Palace stands off in its pride
An orchard turned in time with an architectural stride

Gathered at the Broglio to politic and decide each case
Embroiled as it is for the openly masked in and of face
Justice was served as a matter of acknowledged conspiracy
Overthrow gone wrong in this instance was no real mystery

The Foscari Arch is a thing of sweet Italian romance
A papered gate of notorious ignorance and skewed chance
Its Roman emperors were taken as a matter of war spoils
As snark symbol that the republicans had enough of royals

The Basilica of San Marco was long family held
By the oligarchic family's union of power and field
Political and spiritual as a thing of temporal power
Byzantine in its symmetry held in its grandest hour

Painted mosaics scattered through the streams of time
Whisper their secrets so completely and totally sublime
Four horsemen rest in the best of their stolen adornment
Triumphal as it were of the revered Venetian government

These are the things of culture and ancient society
When the earthly win over any feigned sense of piety
Cafes of elegance inscribe their tragic triangle
Of an old square from which old men argue and tangle

Yet, an angel sits perched meant as a guiding light
To bring home all of the merchants every night
Napoleon built his own grand palace there to live
But this was maybe too much for even Venetians to forgive

On Habits of Soap, Water and Masks

My youngest princess is fond of teasing the truth that we are living history.  What a memory this all will be one day won’t it?   They’ll be able to say they lived through a global crisis and remember things seen, learned and done.  Crisis and opportunity often go hand in hand.

Existence In Balance -Soap Bubble Dhrama

On Habits of Soap, Water and Masks
by Michael Doyle

On looking at this without pretense
So much of this is down to common sense
Washing our hands with soap and water
Is something ever father has taught his daughters

Nothing fancy to be seen is needed to be used
Anything further is a notion to be disabused
Even alcohol can disrupt this viral enemy
Just don't leave it in your car, quite sensibly

Spiked crowns of destructive strategy
Need to be blocked teaches epidemiology
Lean and maybe just a tad beyond mean
These viruses are amazing dabs of protein

We'll need to manipulate antibodies to bind
Or, at least, that is what scientists have in mind
There will be a need for successfully run trials
Before at last, we'll reach out with victorious smiles

All of this, is much too much to live and yet we do
To keep this safe and sane for the likes of me and you
Until then, we'll live with masks protecting each face
This is the new norm that each of us must learn to embrace

Integrative Imperative

If you’re roughly my age or older and maybe younger, the idea of taking an integrative approach to health and healing as a wholistic matter is probably approached with some caution.   Honestly, though  our health is in our hands and with a little thinking it seems pretty clear that despite a lot of Western medicine wanting to isolate body parts and issues in to different systems, it’s all part of a whole.  Isn’t it?  At least, I think I’m in agreement with a lot of this.  The deeper it’s investigated, the move it seems not only legitimate but something that we need to embrace.

University of Kentucky - Duality of Aspiration and Wisdom

Integrative Imperative
by Michael Doyle

In these troubled times, it is imperative
That we think about things integrative
Joining together the body, spirit and mind
Empowered toward wellness as we find

The body heals the body it's openly said
Let that roll around in your head
Half the time, placebos appear to function
As traditional and alternative come into conjunction

Doctors are learning to listen and to integrate
As patients have taken greater charge of their fates
It has become a thing of proven worthy relationship
Learning to turn to nutrition, wellness and even worship

It's a truism that disease comes from behavior observed
And that only in the right living do we gain life deserved
Integrative medicine is not new as is too often told
But really it is a return to the wisdom of the old

Traditional medicine avoids things like pills
What is needed is to look at meditation not cheap thrills
Mindfulness is a think of good and decent thought
It is, indeed, the path toward our wellness well sought

Basket Case Blues

Dedicated to many a victim of the music industry who thought themselves gods only to wake up suddenly finding differently…

Styx In Concert -Light Show

Basket Case Blues
by Michael Doyle

With your name up in the bright lights
Enraptured by a million neon nights
You played the Gardens as if they were your own
Though you were a million miles from home

You arrived as a scarlet angel into therapy
Trying to amuse yourself with airs of mystery
Wrapped up in your multiplicity of addictions
It played out as it were in your predilections

Chasing your inner child from its comfort zone
Until you awoke to find you were all alone
The itch comes back dressed in its leather and lace
With no time for tomorrow's alibis; lost in disgrace

Who do you believe in, in a world so unreliable
When it's so hard to have courage; your spine becomes pliable
Life has become a masterpiece of artistic contortion
And nothing is left behind but bits of social distortion

You wish you had the courage, then maybe you'd confess
You wanted to be more, but somehow always end up being less
Sold on the big lie that of following your paper dreams
But hitting rock bottom is just as real as it seems

On Robot Autonomy

It’s mind boggling really how science fiction has become so much our reality.

Steam: The Hunt XIV and Exposition - Robot Man Guards the Entrance

On Robot Autonomy
by Michael Doyle

Stepping from science fiction into reality
We find the arrival of robotic autonomy
Though the worm hole we do yet go
With a faint echo of an unknown hello

All along a dream in our human history
We have dreamed of robots as an eventuality
Now we have the Rover up exploring Mars
As here on Earth, we transition to driverless cars

Pushing beyond our very human capacity
We find robots collaboratively adding to capability
Each of these a moment and movement in imagination
That increases our ability in actuation

Mastering the steps of industrial manipulation
Tasks are completed in perfected sensation
Driving on by its own sense of estimation
Navigating toward our best and better destination

Robots clean our spaces and our living rooms
Adding to our ease and not into our doom
Sensors and actuators create useful movement
Each of these bringing humanity's further improvement

Into the danger these go for the sake of humanity
Seeking to help us rise despite our carnal vanity
Robotics as a theme was first coined in 1941
I wonder what Asimov would make of what we've done

The Three Laws of Robotics were set out
Not injuring humans and obeying us beyond doubt
Except where injury to other humans is involved
I have to wonder where protecting itself will be evolved

Thought For the Day: Farmers Are the Founders of Civilization

“Let us not forget that the cultivation of the earth is the most important labor of man. When tillage begins, other arts will follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of civilization.” – Daniel Webster (1782-1852)
