First Principles: When Taxes Go So Far As To Entrench On the Subsistence of the People, These Become Burdensome and Oppressive

“Taxation to a certain point is not only proper but useful, because by stimulating the industry of individuals it increases the wealth of the Community. But when Taxes go so far as to intrench on the subsistence of the people they become burdensome and oppressive. The expenditures of money ought in such case to be (if possible) avoided, and if unavoidable, it will be most wise to have recourse to loans.” – Robert Morris in Letter to Alexander Martin  (July 20, 1782)

Specter of A Well Aimed Gun

Between the chase scenes, I believe science fiction grapples on some of humanity’s biggest questions.  Do you?

Star Wars: The Untold Story - Fly By Zoned

Specter of A Well Aimed Gun
by Michael Doyle

Specters of a gun take aim
Innocent of the perceptions slain
Fooled by the ways things are seen
Though its all a bit more than a dream

Deductive in its influence and analysis
Shaken down beyond paralysis
As true as its deceptive philosophy
Science fiction has borne a world from analogy

So many of our scientific inventions
Are science fiction translated into convention
And the subtle operations of thought
Are as startling as the essentials sought

Let us grapple with the greatest of questions
Daring to do so without hesitation
Science fiction often becomes science fact
As it interplays together to become more exact

It's there in all of the fantasy scenes
That we reach out for beyond electric dreams
We find our glasses raised by their inception
As we together lift the veils off our deceptions

Rites of Passage

What might it be to see the rites of passage for a Viking daring to reach west not east and in so doing changes perceptions of possibility?

Royal Opera House - Vikings -Dragon Comes To Visit

Rites of Passage
by Michael Doyle

As odd as it may seem
You have long been in my dreams
I have always dreamed of you
Though I should not confess this as true

Seldom have I been satisfied
With the flavors of life that I have tried
It is said that for knowledge
Beyond the doorframe's familiar edge

That Odin himself gave his eye
I would give more and will or I will die
Seeking my quest beyond and toward the West
Mine is yet seen but the truest test

A man is born for the fight
To guard his family and keep things right
As true as the Northern Lights
These moments are precious in my sight

Are dragon ships just dead things
Or mistresses of all that the sea brings
There is no worry to be had
Though the depths might make us sad

First Principles: Having Lived Long, I Have Many Instances of Being Obligated…To Change My Opinions… I Thought Right But Found To Be Otherwise

“Having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obligated, by better information or fuller consideration, to change my opinions even on important subjects, which I thought right but found to be otherwise.” – Benjamin Franklin, Speech on Sept. 17 1787

In Belated Honor of Armed Forces Day 2020!!

As a Veteran, it is just shameful that I missed posting something to honor our Armed Forces Day 2020 on May 16th (this past Saturday).   My apologies to all active duty, reserve, retired and everyone who served.    Aloha Promises Forever proudly supports our military forces and all who have ever served!!  Freedom is not for free and it is we who have preserved this for so many others!!  From the bottom of my heart to the tip of my salute, thank you men and women for serving to keep our nation free!!

“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

Dancing Cheek To Cheek

Thinking on the Prohibition, flappers, gangsters and murder as she wrote…

Catch Twenty Two -Suzy and Bond Owners Dancing

Dancing Cheek To Cheek
by Michael Doyle

Dancing cheek to cozy cheek
Might bring us to ruin
Libertine as it is
It might lead to our undoing

The habits of coming home
Casually in first light of morning
Left many a soul feeling alone
And seeing it as first warning

She called him, "Daddy"
Though that might be pointed sadly
It was a partnership in crime
That felt perfectly sublime

Rolling him for his roll
It's hard to say who was in control
Volatile in its escalation
Breath gasping in its inhalation

Beginning began with death
And raced on without a breath
Times like these can only be real
Fiction would not so deceptively reveal

Darkness called to be richly explained
Somewhere for most it becomes implored
To safely understand this messy mess
That even the bravest fear to confess

Blowing Down the Walls

Based in part on 2 Corinthians 2:14-16:

Kintsugi; Spirited Beyond - Cherry Blossom Bridge

Blowing Down the Walls
by Michael Doyle

Blown away by righteousness and grace
Profound joy takes down all my walls
Mercy has taken me to this place
I have found my peace in life's squalls

Like the walls of Jericho falling
The presence of God conquers my soul
In the blessed silence I hear His calling
Taking my place in reverence to extol

I find myself hungering for the good
Taking down the walls between others
Living my life newly understood
Standing with my sisters and brothers

For Christ I am willing to be a fool
Only caring for His influence and authority
Taking my steps within the golden rule
Surrendering my all to His sovereignty

Blown away by righteousness and grace
Profound joy takes down all my walls
Mercy has taken me to this place
I have found my peace in life's squalls

Like the walls of Jericho falling
The presence of God conquered my soul
In the blessed silence I heard Him call
And have taken my place in reverence to extol

Like a child embracing life's possibility
I have accepted Christ's blessed invitation
Skinning my knees as I climb life's tree
With a shout of joy, I praise in exaltation

Crushed in deep longing to know God's ways
I know my badness to my depths of sheer grief
Turning my heart and head to good in my days
I pray my prayer earnestly seeking His relief

Blown away by righteousness and grace
Profound joy takes down all my walls
Mercy has taken me to this place
Having made my peace in life's squalls

Like the walls of Jericho falling
The presence of God conquers my soul
In the blessed silence I heed His call
Taking my place in reverence to extol
