First Principles: State Governments Retain All Rights of Sovereignty Before Had and Not Exclusively Delegated To the United States

“But as the plan of the convention aims only at a partial union or consolidation, the State governments would clearly retain all the rights of sovereignty which they before had, and which were not, by that act, EXCLUSIVELY delegated to the United States.” – Alexander Hamilton,  Federalist No. 32 (January 3, 1788)

Reconciled In My Forgiveness

Based in part on 2 Cor 5:17-21 :

Home, Sweet, Home - Thankful For the Gift of This New Day

Reconciled In My Forgiveness
by Michael Doyle

Stepping off the heavenly throne
For the sake of humanity's own
We are bought and covered in our sin
Thankful that we are saved again

Loved though we did not deserve
Held by the holy that we might serve
To be convicted in the words we hear
Praiseworthy in our love with no fear

In the depths of the shadows of our soul
We accept the comfort that does console
That though we are indeed bound for glory
We know we must do our part for His story

In perfect submission we find in your name
Our way out of sin and dishonor out of shame
Thankful that from my chains you set me free
Setting me apart to learn how to live wholly holy

The old me has passed away to become reconciled
From those things were embraced and defiled
No longer having my trespasses counted against me
But having been forgiven for all the error in enmity

Confirmed as Christian in the realness of identity
As brother to all as part of God's good family
Having come to terms with who I really must be
Presenting myself as I am in all my reality

Not a refugee from the things that I did wrong
But as one who knows where I know I belong
Rock solid in who I am as a man who does his best
Having long since past that important test

Believing what the Lord does say about me
Soul in keeping as one assured of my family
In a society of style over substance, running deeper
So that I have become new as the stars' keeper

The reasons for my living changed to a new creation
Looking for something deeper than mere sensation
I walk my path side by side in all of God's ways
Come alive from the cross for the rest of my days

With God, I am reconciled in our relationship
Knowing my part is found in my holy worship
There in the message of hope given up to me
Though dead once, the debt is paid for my dignity

Cleansed from the very worse of who I have been
I know that i have worn the tainted sinner's skin
Unable to fix the horrid things that I have done
Knowing I owe all of this to God's only son

Through the grace of God I have received this gift
Bridging the gap of unworthiness across the rift
That I could never hope through myself to redeem
The lamb of God has made my soul become clean

Though once a creature of darkness, I am made right
Having been led through the goodness to the light
I willingly play a vital role as an ambassador for Him
Feeling this deeply in my soul as more than a whim

The purpose of my life is to help others come alive
To reach for that that more than to just survive
God's mouthpiece of hope found in our Savior
To live a better life by changing our behavior

Showing through the Father's light, God's glory
Representing Him through actions and His story
Embracing the hurt and filling the world with love
Doing our best to show the path of heaven above

Lessons From Eden Park

The Roaring Twenties were a fascinating time.  Among the lessons to be learned was that a woman could do and be more than they had been allowed until then, vice and other personal choices could not be controlled and that gangster could become folk heroes.

New Palermo -Bootleg Barrels

Lessons From the Roaring Twenties
by Michael Doyle

Life can be short in its measure
The impetus behind being given to pleasure
Women came into the Twenties roaring
Libertine and dynamically soul soaring

Wondering a bit why it's called history
As though only men have known the glory
Women have always been right there all along
Though sometimes shunted to the shadows grown long

Barrier breakers leaping headlong into action
Determinately all they could be to their satisfaction
Wars such as World War I have a habit of changing life
That greatly exceeds that horrific strife

The Four Swallows had come to their roost
In between giving J.B. Corn his unholy boost
Necessity has always bred its invention
Some of these defying society's stern convention

There's a time travel to the business of history
As each strand connects to the edges of mystery
Taking life in small sips of French Seventy Five
The Roaring Twenties were quite the time to be alive

Life is often lived as a time of messy complexity
No matter how much we wish for sheer simplicity
Simultaneously repulsive and yet utterly fascinating
With all of its layers busily inter-relating

Remus' brain exploded into a boardwalk empire
Where all of the best and some of the dregs conspire
To set fire to that which constrains society
Without even a second thought about notoriety

History it seems can be more outlandish than fiction
As proven time and again with its accurate depiction
Whiskey pirates stole these harrowing, dog days
Causing all the bootleggers to seek out better ways

Prohibition came, destroyed and finally went
In those times lived and perhaps ill spent
But you cannot press draconian control of vice
Without it coming back on us like a steely vise

Booze and brains eventually won over brawn
And saw these days through until these were gone
Lawlessness was wrongly glorified in its height
Until freedom of choice became again a liberating light

First Principles: Born In Other Countries, Our Law Acknowledge the Right To Join In Our Society Conforming To Our Established Rules

“Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular.” – Thomas Jefferson, in Letter to Hugh White (May 2, 1801)

Texas 1836

I have always found American history fascinating in all of our legends and tales, tall or not.

Texas 1836
by Michael Doyle

Texas, Eighteen Hundred Thirty Six
Thousands of Americans invited in
Finding their place in desert sand and sticks
Engaged in a struggle they would win

As Comanches and Karankawa fight
To keep their tribal land
And though maybe not purely right
They would lose; every tribe and band

The tension would flare and rise
As outlaws roamed throughout free
Under many a bloody tequila sunrise
It was a mixed tale of freedom and slavery

General Santa Anna fought for his land
While Jackson forestalled intervention
Americans would prevail in their stand
Whatever the wrongs and right of intention

Texas was forced to become its own nation
While Houston and Austin stood to fight
Manifest Destiny swept across the nation
Though the Mexicans would hold it as not right

The Alamo in death and ashes burned
As Texas roared up in great flame
Some lessons are not easily learned
Especially, when mankind's folly is to blame

It became a case of hardcore fight and die
With Mexicans, Tejanos and Americans cast in lot
It was not theirs really to question why
But to die if need be for reasons not forgot

In the Tears We’ve Cried

Love, especially long distance love, can be so difficult.  Funny how it feels so easy when two hearts that mesh well meet.  Then things can get difficult.  But, you know what?  Bob Marley is right… was right.. whatever.  Thing is that it’s about knowing that you’ve met the one that is worth hurting over and still wake up knowing how much you love them still and perhaps, if it’s possible, even more.  It’s even harder when you are in an environment where levels of each other are revealed one at a time, right?

Watching a Netflix series called Love Is Blind.  Yes, very slowly.  Trying to absorb its lessons to learn from and grow as a man.  Trying also to get things right for once.  Sometimes I feel like a keystone cop with all that I’ve gotten wrong.

It Starts With A Smile - Secrets Told

In the Tears We've Cried
by Michael Doyle

I'm not one to believe
In luck or coincidence
Truth never deceives
I feel the hand of providence

My angel brings her message
From the heavens above
First sight brings its presage
Leading to the pleasant moments of love

Finding ourselves dancing in the rain
Feeling it now more than ever
It's something we don't need to explain
Our balance will lead to forever

Blessed by your cheers
Moving past all of the fears
Finally put at our ease
Each of us living to please

Living for us and each other
Knowing that we don't want another
I've seen it how we've tried
I know it in the tears we've cried

The question we had to ponder
Is love truly close to blind
We have met head on as we wandered
Learning its kind meeting kind

It's been the becoming of the real
Taking us beyond think and feel
Into the know that is knowing
Lifting the curtains of what's showing

First Principles: I Wish From My Soul That the Legislature of This State Could See A Policy of A Gradual Abolition of Slavery

“I wish from my soul that the legislature of this State could see a policy of a gradual Abolition of Slavery.”  – George Washington

Unlike the simplistic retelling of pieces of history that the 1619 Project managed to pull over on America recently, our history is complex and given toward compromises.  If you’ve been following First Principles here or have a good knowledge of American history you are well versed in knowing that nearly all of the founding fathers wished to find a way out of slavery that did not ruin the economy and foist an even worse condition on all involved.  It was of considerable regret to George Washington that slavery was not abolished in his days.  He made considerable effort toward seeing this done.  Yet, we would be liars to say he freed the slave working on Mount Vernon.  Some complexities cannot be summed up into sound bites or easy quips.  But to pretend that the efforts of our Founders did not lead to the Civil War and weren’t fought even in our earliest days is just plain wrong.

What is even more regrettable is the slavery which exists around the world and even on the grounds of our America today.   In its myriad forms it is still a regrettable thing done and that remains to be abolished. 😦

Implausibly Transformative

In dreaming the impossible Dream, the man from La Mancha sallied forth to defeat his quests and earn the love of his lady fair.   Or umm something like that…. Part II of Part I of the book summed up poetically…

Storybrooke Gardens - The Windmill Crosses A Cloudy Sky.

Implausibly Transformative
by Michael Doyle

Transformative in all that he so desires
His heart alit by the passions of fire
Dedicating his days to becoming a knight
He is determined to set the world aright

Sallying forth into the world on his quest
Spiritual in every manner, he meets his test
The world you see is deeply in its need
He sets out to make real all that he did read

An inn turns into a castle inside his mind
The truth it must be told is left far behind
The world around decides to play along
Giving him his place of vigil where he belongs

A would be hero takes his beatings sprightly
As sure as he is in his confidence quite rightly
That by taking these beatings nearly every day
His nobility is shown in some sort of mystical way

All the stumbles by the poor pounded knight
Crumbles before the world's clean and clear sight
A former friend finds him out on his journey
Returning Don Quixote to his home and safety

Marveled in madness, he finds his certainty
A knight after all is needed quite urgently
Western history would be different from antiquity
If only the real world had such pure nobility

Sancho Pancho was shown this pure and true light
With the twinkling of an eye as the squire to his knight
Even the practical can be lured in by false promise
Grandness quickly puts away the Doubting Thomas
