It’s the eighth day of Na/GloPoWriMo 2020! Today’s optional prompt is to take bits of Twitter bot generated poets and run with it to make it our own. I have no idea what others did, but, it seemed the thing to do to run with all the poet bots the organizer chose as examples and weave them into a poem with my own words sprinkled in to give these my own meaning.
While You Named the Stars For Me
by Michael Doyle
There in the deep valley
Of shattered monuments
Rests a sense of broken deities
Knowing their dreamless sleep
You speak to me loudly
Of the masters of reality
Who know more than the wise men
Who hold their own muse
I am not ready
For anything to happen
But I will know what to do
Despite the decline of dependable oracles
Unlike the swans
These have not been faithful
Despite their grandmotherly disguise
Their words are not treats to be had
Desire is not a light thing
For its moments that contain these
Lovers know the happiness and sorrow it brings
In the frailty that is life
The moon installed
Extended its silver calculations
The sun, it stalled
While you named the stars for me

American history continues:
The Turbulence Begins by Michael Doyle As the post-war alliance fell apart, the United Nations started The start of Cold War began and sustained as peace departed Confrontations began and nuclear weapons were on both sides' hands These were the days that Harry Truman took America's command A common man suddenly elevated into the office of the presidency Uncommonly up through the ranks he gained his ascendency He immediately went to work on policy with other nations Including fostering the UN and wishing to keep peaceful relations Yet, with the victory over Hitler, Stalin occupied more territory In the clear intention of building an empire for Russian security From Stettin to Trieste, and Iron Curtain extended the continent To thwart this expansionism, Kennan's Containment held US sentiment The Truman Doctrine supported free people against subjugation In these economically hard times, many vulnerable nations Had faced down radical challenges due to their devastation By supporting these nations, we backed up freedom's salvation China, had since the 1920s, being in an extremely uncivil war The Communists under Mao won the prize and closed the door Deciding instead of America to ally with the Soviets in cooperation Facing hostility, foreign and military policy changed in our nation On the Korean Peninsula, the Cold War turned red hot As the North swept into the South, self-determination was forgot For though both sides desperately wanted reunification Truman called it a police action and called on the United Nations MacArthur's landing at Inchon turned the war around Until as reaching the Sino border, MacArthur lost all ground Politics trapped military as McArthur argued with Truman And just as suddenly, legend turned out to be a mortal man While true enough there is no substitution for victory Statesmanship won that confrontation; containment would be history The Korean War remains to this day a stalemate The rectification of which will come at some later date With "I Like Ike", Eisenhower became our president A veteran as champion for the People had its precedent And Eisenhower, who is thought of as very a non-partisan Garnered the vote of the People in a way most bi-partisan He governed to settle through accommodation and consolidation Bringing fiscal conservatism with the New Deal as normalization Facing global challenges from Vietnam to the Middle East Eisenhower had to respond to stabilize while harming the least From the Arab Conflict with Israel to the Suez Canal Then unto Castro's takeover in Cuba, none of this was banal Castro quickly sided with the Soviets miles from our shore These were the issues Eisenhower had to face and then more With stoic crystal ball gazing, Ike's farewell address to the nation Was looking ever forward at what might become our destination He warned against impulsiveness in favor of a better tomorrow And that we should not mortgage our heritage or we would sorrow He warned of the dangers from the rapidly growing government Stating that an over allowance for defense counter our sentiment That the military-industrial complex could as a deep government And was and is misplaced power and as such an endangering ailment An ill-informed citizenry could prove a bane to society Without our vigilance, liberty lose in favor of security Further warning that we should not let the technocratic class Override our moral conscience as it has indeed come to pass All of these things stated prescient to the abuses of power We have come to learn that there is danger in every hour That there must be a careful balance of liberty and security The tension between imperatives must be guarded to be free (c) April 8, 2020 Michael Doyle All Rights Reserved

Day 7 of Na/GloPoWriMo! The target objective?
“…a poem based on a news article.”
My subject today can be drawn on any number of articles plastered throughout our daily news periodicals to the point it cannot be escaped really. But, how do we then understand social distancing and its need in facing off and beating down this pandemic?
Mathing the COVID-19 Curve by Michael Doyle Part of math's power Is in mapping what's to come This is needed more than ever in this hour So much so, it makes my mind numb At first glance, COVID-19 Seems a bit overblown From the math seen It's easier to understand what's been shown The simplest of change comes in linear Adding a little each and every day But what of epidemics which are nonlinear It becomes clear that it's a troubling way Illness impacted by time Adds up to say maybe 100 a day Projecting as if it were a straight line Easy enough wouldn't you say? The illness coming is here and exponential The feedback loop keeps rapidly increasing Expanding in numbers of horrifying potential Instead of staying the same or decreasing We humans tend to see in the linear But epidemics are on a Logarithmic scale Applying a exponential model of the non-linear And is needed to understand our tale So how long before we're out of hospital beds? As the current data shows This thought is staggering to my head By mid-April, if constant, the beds will be on overflow Business as usual would be our very death And this is what we must heed and understand Trajectory rates vary but all take my breath Early action is needed throughout every land The earlier and more action that is taken The more lives we will save There comes a point where however shaken The susceptible in society will heal or go to grave This then is where we must be in supplication Even taking notice of the SIR curve If we as society are to have right application And in doing so steady our nerves In the beginning, all within are susceptible in population Though the infected will be in degrees of proportion And as a virus moves through the greater population There will be impactful removal of its own proportion How quickly this happens depends almost exclusively on contact How much, how often and is this a consistent contact rate The rate of healing (or death) will to have it's impact The rate of death or healing lessens infection sealing our fate The absence of any known vaccine spells it out That our resiliency is dependent on contact The base reproduction number removes all doubt That contact is the gasoline of this fire is simply fact Reducing the rate of contact lessens the infection And the outbreak is no longer quite as bad For now the 1918 Influenza is less worse than our current direction Medical care is crucial but the lack of common sense is sad We do have the ability to mitigate the contact rate And if together we practice good habit of basic sanitation We can flatten the curve and escape our worse fate The math proves that keeping calm and safe will save our nations (c) April 7, 2020 Michael Doyle All Rights Reserved
At this stage of American history, we advanced onto the world stage having no real choice but to fight a war on multiple fronts in World War II and rather self consciously becoming a, if not the, world leader in multiple meanings of this position.
Our Finest Hour by Michael Doyle In the 1930s, American eyes were fixed internally There was little time to gaze out internationally While it's unfair to say were isolationist It is true that we were by no means internationalist But these were times of dictatorial, expansionist nations And the dynamics would with certainty lead to conflagration The beating of the tribal drums signaled catastrophic war As Japan conquered China and Germany expanded even more Acts of territorial aggression faced only appeasing toleration As chunks of countries were take in stride without consideration Neutrality became more and more impossible to sustain While the Blitzkrieg advanced, all attempts to halt it were in vain By June of 1940, Paris itself found its lights out and occupied While Nazi domination mocked the Treaty of Versailles in reply FDR began to ween America from its preferred, feigned neutrality Into adequately preparing to engage in this new reality The Battle of Britain was also the battle for Christian civilization With it depended all of freedom's most cherished institutions This then for the Free World would begin our finest hour As Britain turned back the Nazi beast always seeking to devour The Royal Air Force beat back the Luftwaffe in the skies While allowing time for America to provide materials and supplies In 1940, FDR won like a horse in midstream his third reelection Following this with a fire side chat setting our new direction America would sign into law the needed Lend Lease Act Which helped our allies letting them know they were backed This, in fact, was nothing less than a secret sort of war As we took on the German Navy and aided and assisted even more For America, there is no infamous a day than December 7, 1941 With the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, war had begun The Japanese thinking strategically had look for a knockout blow Taking out most of the Pacific Fleet, but, little did they know Their hope to demoralized proved, opinion polls aside, That it is unwise to wound the heart of American Pride Simultaneously, the Soviet Union left the Non-Aggression Pact Thuggish as a new ally could be, that we needed Stalin is a fact Admiral Yamamoto had some idea of America's industrial ability But under estimated that it would redouble in its needed capacity It was this All-American burst of essential, crucial productivity That allowed the Allies to manage its win somewhat predictably The decision made, defeating Hitler became our first priority Securing the North Atlantic and then the south underbelly of Italy Were things soon enough done yet without the decisive victory The Russians under siege prompted D-Day as much needed history So many things might have gone wrong and yet somehow did not And Normandy was won though the battle was very hard fought Allied Commander Eisenhower did not prioritize Berlin's defeat Thinking it mostly symbolic who took the city if Hitler was beat Churchill argued against this and turned out to be quite right Meanwhile in the Pacific, the Japanese had unstoppable might Until American carriers would provide the turning point day There has never been a more decisive naval battle than Midway From there, Admiral Nimitz and General MacArthur converged In a two prong attack from the Philippines to Japan they merged 82 days at Okinawa is often referred to as the Typhoon of Steel A quarter of a million dead could not break the Japanese will Victory was achieved in Europe and FDR won his fourth election Breaking precedent in every way for our American nation FDR died just ahead of the Jewish death camps revelation As a shudder of horror cast its shadow across our nation An invasion of Japan would have cost upwards of a million dead Truman's Manhattan Project atom bomb would cost less it was said As the new president, Harry Truman took this on his shoulders Hiroshima and Nagasaki bore the brunt as their ruins would smoulder On the Emperor's surrender, the most destructive war in history Was brought to its end, changing the course of things decisively Of America's standing in the world in a sort of permanent sense Integrally involved now in world affairs, we provided defense The mantle of leadership required a standing army for our nation And with it came the obligations of incessant accommodation Self conscious as we were, we departed from our stubborn past But our organic principles would endure and still last (c) April 7, 2020 Michael Doyle All Rights Reserved
“Before the formation of this Constitution, it had been affirmed as a self evident truth, in the declaration of Independence, very deliberately made by the Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled that, “all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” This declaration of Independence was received and ratified by all the States in the Union, and has never been disannulled. May we not from hence conclude, that the doctrine of Liberty and Equality is an article in the political creed of the United States.” – Samuel Adams, in an Address to the Legislature of Massachusetts (January 17, 1794)

“Language is the archives of history.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, writer and philosopher (1803-1882)
