First Principles: Freedom Is A Gift From God and Not To Be Alienated By Mankind and Voluntarily Become A Slave

“If men through fear, fraud or mistake, should in terms renounce and give up any essential natural right, the eternal law of reason and the great end of society, would absolutely vacate such renunciation; the right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, it is not in the power of Man to alienate this gift, and voluntarily become a slave.” – Samuel Adams, in Rights of the Colonists (1772)

The Rise and Fall of Richard Nixon

American history continues:

Milkwood Halloween Hunt - Praying for Inspiration

The Rise and Fall of Richard Nixon
by Michael Doyle

Richard Nixon was a non-charming and awkward leader
But then again to the astute among history readers
His reappraisal warrants much for our consideration
Hard born and raised, his life drove his ambition

A Navy man who became a determined hardball anti-communist
He was Ike's right hand man as his Vice President
In 1968, rising from his ashes, he sought an honorable peace
Drawing down forces, his Vietnamization drove our release

Henry Kissinger secretly negotiated the Paris Peace Accords
He and Le Duc Tho won the Nobel Peace Prize for the record
Capitalizing on the growing Soviet-Sino rift, Nixon made history
Proving himself quite masterful at the art of diplomacy

Cold Warrior Nixon opened China to détente
And then again with Russia as easy as we might want
He and Kissinger practiced the Realpolitik of realism
As the Nixon Doctrine held our interests with optimism

Shifting back and forth from left to right politics domestically
He faced down inflation and OPEC's embargo less masterfully
It festered stagflation and yet he handily won reelection
His dirty tricks and Watergate swung his victory another direction

This and worse pointed towards accusations of abuse of power
This including taping of conversations for endless hours
On August 9,1974, President Nixon tendered his resignation
He did so for the focused good of his beloved nation

His were the mangled ways of an imperial presidency
One that had gone beyond the Constitution for expediency
With the ascent of the modest Gerald Ford to this office
The country gained an optimistic Ford not a Lincoln on purpose

Acutely aware that his rise to office needed affirmation
He graciously spoke of his need for prayerful confirmation
Still in retribution, Congress allowed South Vietnam to fall
While in Cambodia, Pol Pot lined millions up against the wall

Peanut farmer Jimmy Carter took presidential office in 1976
Hoping that simplicity and humility might provide needed fix
Making job one, energy policy as his foremost priority
Donning a swear and blaming American malaise brought his history

Surging inflation and unemployment were at an all time high
Coupled with Iran, gave Carter just enough time to say goodbye
Between hostages and gaffes, he had lost his credibility
His policies of accommodation showed clear his place in history

As he stood by and allowed the Russians to enter Afghanistan
Blunders like these made necessary the transformative man...

Mother’s Milk Haynaku Sonnet

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 10, 2020!  The objective is to write a:

“hay(na)ku is a variant on the haiku. A hay(na)ku consists of a three-line stanza, where the first line has one word, the second line has two words, and the third line has three words. You can write just one, or chain several together into a longer poem. For example, you could write a hay(na)ku sonnet…”

Lights & Sirens - Mother & Child

Mother's Milk Haynaku Sonnet
by Michael Doyle

Baby
Cries out
Needing his nourishment

Mother
Hurries there
Holding him close

There
Is nothing
Like mother's milk

Love
Builds bonds
Shaping this child

Garbage in; garbage out
Right fuels in, removes all doubt

The Great Not So Great Society

American History continues through the Lyndon Baines Johnson presidency:

Coccon - Blessed Are the Poor

The Great Not So Great Society
by Michael Doyle

LBJ entered his presidency aiming to be legendary
Setting his sights on ending poverty through Great Society
Johnson aimed to do this being a master of legislation
Conversely, the Conservative movement was rising in our nation

With his vastly arrayed quiver of proposed legislation
And his actions to ensure black vote was franchised in our nation
In favor of the Great Society is its decrease in poverty
This, however, had it's Medicare increases that still cause anxiety

Marriage became weakened under some of welfare's requirements
The gap between promises and results grew from flawed government
There was great question as to the ethics of the whole
It would lead to much skepticism as to the government's role

Civil Rights failures led to the Watts riots and across the nation
These riots were a bloody sort that came in MLK's repudiation
Which in turn caused damage to the plight and cause of civil rights
In a tortuous path of the torn and tattered urban nights

Vietnam and Southeast Asia experienced conflict's escalation
As three torpedoes fired let the Tonkin Bay Resolution
This led to a blank check war seemingly with no limitation
One in four serving were drafted to stop a domino fall of nations

Despite the agreement that there is no substitution for victory
The politics of the time dictated our soldiers be limited capacity
This Doctrine of Limited War led to the DMZ and how we fought
And why victory could not be had not matter how hard sought

Soldiers bled out on television screens in full gory real time
Up close, personal and wearing away as touching on sublime
Antiwar angst and unhappiness led to a general disaffection
As radical movements angrily sought a different direction

Counter culture in its alternatives struck its nihilistic pose
A product of our affluence in rejection of materialism to propose
And answer in echo of Eisenhower's warning against the inadequacy
Of the emptiness found as we woke to reshape America's history

Johnson was so rattled by all of this critical opposition
That he stepped down as nominee in surrender to his contrition
Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy were shot dead
Assassinated in a wave of violence that left our nation in dread

Like last men standing, Richard Nixon ran against Hubert Humphry
Peace with honor would lead the path to Nixon's victory
Triumphant in his return to politics from the wilderness
In the end, this too would lead to much lack of kindness

Cross Shaped of An Imperfect Heart

On the ninth day of Na/GloPoWriMo 2020, the optional prompt is to “write a “concrete” poem – a poem in which the lines and words are organized to take a shape that reflects in some way the theme of the poem.”  I have never done or tried to do this before.  What makes this worse is that I don’t really know how to do anything but guesstimate the graphing of this so that it lays out correctly.  In handwritten form it works.  We’ll see…  In that Easter is this Sunday…

Water Edge Town - New Life Christian Fellowship - Draped Cross

Cross Shaped of An Imperfect Heart
by Michael Doyle

Oh, how I long to see
                The Lord in His mystery
                Wonder what He would say
                As I stood so humbly
My eyes on all the Holy
                Hoping He might know me
                Standing there prayerfully
Would He forgive my many mistakes I have made along the way
With all my broken promises in all the tragic things I say
Worse still are the dreadful things that I know that I've done
Though I earnestly pledged my love and loyalty to the Holy Son
Faithful in all of His ways
To me in all of my many days
               Loving has He always been
To me, despite all of my sin
               Forever in my true gratitude
               For giving me needed latitude
And dwelling in my weak soul
               Despite my heart losing control
               Sinful man since Eden's falling
Nature of man to deny His calling
Resting in His comfort and grace
This Easter I feel His embrace
As He hung upon a craven cross
Dying so that I might yet live

Turbo Charged

American History continues through the Kennedy presidency.

Barddeco - Sharpened Cross Inside A Void

Turbo Charged
by Michael Doyle

Nixon versus Kennedy; election 1960
Workhorse versus glamor; it hits me
That the sleek athleticism of the New Frontier
Was as distinctive as this election year

The torch had been past to a new generation
Disciplined with a hard peace, holding the past with veneration
Taking it on the chin as an American that fights
For the success of liberty and price of human rights

Calling all Americans to their duty and participation
Not a Keynesian but a Mellonite in policies of taxation
Contrary to the experts, this era would find prosperity
Along with heading toward lunar landing for posterity

Toughly negotiating the 13 day Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviets backdown on missiles they said didn't exist
Two minutes to a nuclear midnight came to calculation
It had a sobering effect on the USSR and our own nation

Before policy could be set for the world's trouble spots
JFK's thoughts were left unknown and put to a full stop
As Lee Harvey Oswald shot him dead in assassination
Camelot and its glamor died as sadness gripped our nation

With JFK's death, gone was our flair for noble optimism
An optimism given despite ample cause for his criticism
It was an end of an era and death of a good friend
Though he was somewhat unreliable as Civil Rights trend

Martin Luther King, Jr., organized keeping pressure on
Marching against segregation and from that point on
With piety he pursued social change through peaceful resistance
Speaking of Christian and our founding principles with persistence

With all difficulty accepted, this nation would live up to its creed
That all men are created equally, a message we still need
Central in the all encompassing American sense of our affirmation
The very essence of what we mean as our American nation

Despite the stardust stance of decisive American unity
This alone did not solve the issues of intolerant bigotry
Lyndon Baines Johnson succeeded Kennedy on his assassination
A man of great paradox who would come to lead our nation

Finding My Strength

Based in part on 1st Samuel:

Calvary Chapel SL - Good Word From the Pulpit

Finding Strength
by Michael Doyle

Forever grateful for your serenity
In times of fallen indignities
That keeps my peace inside
Keeping sure footed in my stride

Finding strength in my belief
In God and His Word I find relief
Some days aren't so good
That's just something understood

Still we must make the right choice
Paying attention to that small still voice
And from this finding shelter in my storm
Until that comfort becomes the norm

I need to get the Word dwelling in me
To put on God's yoke to be free
Filled to the fullest of my capacity
Spilled out in my full capability

No matter my finding circumstance
I know I am willing to have this chance
To be blessed fully by our Father's grace
Living fully in His healing embrace
