First Principles: We Must Accept Human Beings As We Find Them Without Expecting Perfection

“We must take human nature as we find it, perfection falls not to the share of mortals.” – George Washington (1786)

Time Well Spent

In this age of global interconnection, we face a modern paradox.  At the same time that we are more connected than ever, we are also increasingly polarized and alienated from one another.  What might have been and can still be redirected into a force to instill solid communications to help in combatting tyranny and overcoming various issues and concerns has had unintended consequences as well.  Too many screen time has created a new way of making friends but also fostered a sense of me’ism that is strikingly disconnected and narcissistic to the nth degree.

Social media has come to recognize these concerns as legitimate and attempting to counter this at least to some degree by encouraging others to know folks not just by their opinions but the things that they are interested in and drive their day to day lives.  They are also increasingly concerned with ‘time well spent’ including trying to balance profit by having consumers constantly connected, but, also involved in their local communities offline.  Time will tell how this all works out.

London Village - Face Time Redefined

Time Well Spent
by Michael Romani

It is said to live life happily
One best does this in a community
In these incipient internet days
We live more isolated in a thousand ways

But, Facebook and Google sensing this is wrong
Have begun building up ways people can belong
Even if questionably limiting free speech
In other ways, they've put this in better reach

Algorithms offer their madcap disorientation
And some attempts have led to greater polarization
But the alternatives of time well spent
Are offered up again and again until we relent

Learning each other goes beyond our mere opinions
Peeled layer by layer like virtual onions
Finding once again that we have more in common than not
And that finding this out is just something we've forgot

Now those who led us off into the disconnected ether
Are same those leading us back face to face like gatekeepers
Back into the embrace of the waiting arms of prolific dialog
And away from the ongoing strands of unidirectional monologue

The coming days will prove to be most informative
To find if social networking becomes truly transformative
Will profit motives give way to friends and family
And in so doing, begin to build a truly global community?

In the coming days of further Twitter Revolution
Wil the offline find the online's tool of communication
These within the global community of universal mind
Will need to make this tool into something more refined

Online and offline merge into a single augmented reality
It's there then that we'll find that conceptuality
As biometric sensors and interfaces crawl under our skins
We must come to terms with our constructs of humanity again

Within the next generation, both will assuredly become one
The merging of self to interface has already begun
It's this global imperative yet to define
That will be the strength of our dividing line

… And when we do we repent
                 ...Focused on time well spent
...Between not just what can we do
...But in deciding the good of me and you....

One Way Destination

Based in part on John 14:6:

Grace Baptist Church of Second Life - He Is Risen

One Way Destination
by Michael Romani

What is preached will be lived in
Lessons learned even though forgiven
Constantly serving as lessons learned
We thank you for all that's discerned

In every way we hope to be a lighthouse
Shining bright and hoping not to douse
The beliefs of all who we find around us
And doing our best just because

We know Jesus as the way, truth and light
And the only way to ever truly get this right
There is no other way to alternative
No matter how much we hear in superlative

About other ways we think sound good
But, the truth is it's simply misunderstood
The one path to know God has been shown
And in this faith the river of life has grown

Not a single inch in width but always narrow
The way taught by the God of the sparrow
That counter of very feather demands the truth
And this my friends stands beyond dispute

Not a single inch in width but always narrow
The way taught by the God of the sparrow
That counter of very feather demands the truth
And this my friends stands beyond dispute

There long before the cross, Jesus made Hs choice
Becoming our savior in both body and voice
Despite fully knowing the death he must pass through
And He did this willingly for me and for you

There on the cross He became all of our sin
Becoming the sacrifice to redeem us again
There was no other way to gain this price
No other way will ever serve to suffice

Siren’s Song

Maybe it’s the beginning of a sea story…

Altered Art Lounge - Siren's Song On the Rocks

Siren's Song
by Michael Romani

My soul fills with longing for the sea
All of its stormy secrets coursing through me
There in her depth of strength in this ocean
Is something that far exceeds my emotion

The waves crash along the sandy shore
But if you listen close enough there is more
The sounds of the siren's song
Pulling me back to where I most belong

Shards of pottery hold their mystery
As shadows of truth from beyond history
Waking out past the wash as splash finds the shore
What is there to find behind mystery's closed door

Secrets kept with an ancient family
Can be a straight path to the crush of calamity
Eyes from the shore search out into the sea
I hear the siren's call bringing an end to me

Your Knight and Vagabond

Conversation starter kept on a echo of same things said.  Mostly, I suppose cause it’s what’s stuck in my head lately.  How does one move beyond square one when to move requires another to have the confidence needed to make that work?

The Bumrose Club & Marina - Brilliant Morning

Your Knight and Vagabond
by Michael Romani

You say that you want to wield
The strength of truth to help you build
A new world out of what's here
I agree but let's be clear

We can build our new tomorrow
We can leave behind ways of sorrow
But to do that is to move beyond fear
We must find our way to persevere

You say that you feel sorry
For the pain you shouldn't carry
I tell you that being without you
Is a far harder thing for me to do

Then not to walk our side by side
I don't really care about my pride
What I care about is today and tomorrow
And for us to find our way past sorrow

I tell you of what's happened to me
Not for drama or to play for sympathy
But so that you might well know
That I don't know how much further I can go

And that what I do very well know
Is that I need to feel your shadow
For as many steps as I may have left
And to know the promises have been kept

If there is a way to find my way through
I want to dance this way with you
I have never asked or expected your perfection
Only to love you as you love me in our connection

If there is a future when all of this is done
I want you to be that special sort of someone
Whose hand I hold onto on my last night
And in so doing, know that I have lived my life right

If I look up into your eyes as the last thing I see
I will count this life lived as good enough for me
These are the things that I can't help thinking on
My North Star kept in view and very much wished upon

You were and are my private story book of once upon
That gives me very reason of faith to keep pushing on
You see, I am in no particular rush to be gone
And like a vagabond searching, I hope you keep the light on

Keep the light on so that I might find my way home
And we might live our lives happily together and not alone
From the first that we met, I have known where I belong
It's that little bit of hope that keeps me going strong

First Principles: Justice, Humanity and Christianity Demand the End of All Slavery

“Justice and humanity require it [the end of slavery] – Christianity commands it. Let every benevolent . . . pray for the glorious period when the last slave who fights for freedom shall be restored to the possession of that inestimable right.” – Noah Webster

It All Began With A Mouse

In many ways, I think I was fortunate in how I grew up.  I had many blessings.  One of these was that I must have visited Disneyland at least 100 times back when the park could be seen from main gate to every ride easily in a day’s time.

The other day, I was thinking about this and it led to a poem.

Haunted Mansion - Hidden Mickeys Ballroom of the Dead

It All Began With A Mouse
by Michael Romani

It all began with a mouse
That built a dream into a house
Hidden quietly on Main Street
Beside the candy shop's treats

It all began with that mouse
That built the house
That became a castle of dreams
Made as real as they seem

Wished upon a shining star
That traveled as fast as far
Building wishes into a kingdom
That from his heart did become

A place of magic for all children
Of every age that would transcend
Creating a smaller world for us all
Building bridges instead of walls
