First Principles: The Opinion Giving Judges the Right To Decide Constitutionality For All Three Branches Makes the Judiciary A Despotic Branch

“The opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves, in their, own sphere of action, but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch.” – Thomas Jefferson (1804)

Facing Fear Toward Tomorrow

A review of race history in America is a mix of hope and of fear; rights and wrongs; in short and in truth a mixed story.  Today, we confront that which was wrong.  Still, we should do so not in erasing yesterday.  But, rather in learning from it.

Destiny Gardens - Watcher On the Lake

Facing Fear Toward Tomorrow
by Michael Doyle

With only five percent of the world's population
Contained and constrained within our bordered nation
Twenty-Five percent the world's convicts are in prison
This then is not the freedom most would envision

How do we remedy the harm that that has been done
Bringing us back as a people of liberty unified as one
Sets of choices made that must be wisely understood
If we are to have a righteous nation decent and good

The Thirteenth Amendment granted clear emancipation
Of all from slavery across the width of our great nation
But there were exceptions of criminality allowing for servitude
That were vastly exploited and now explode with their exactitude

With the end of the Civil War, legal shackles shattered
But then also the economy of the South was left tattered
As then, economic devastation did grow and loom
The wrong answer taken led to America's first prison boom

The Birth of A Nation was released as alleged art and commentary
The few truths, if any, were broad based and fragmentary
Leading the descent into the unrighteous culture of fear
And an avoidance of allowing the "other" anywhere near

Burning unholy crosses in front of innocent homes
And 350,000 Klansmen in Democratic Convention were not alone
Who will ever be able to explain to the survivors of Emmett Till
Why exactly some felt his death was some kind of righteous kill

Segregation and the punitive laws of ole Jim Crow
Relegated American blacks into second class shadow
With the greatest indignity, a thousand points of light
Spread their resistance peacefully to fight for human rights

After decades of hearing the word that they must learn to "wait"
American black people arose to use forceful love to defeat hate
The wait that always meant never made justice an unfamiliarity
Used in action to exclude brothers and sisters from God's family

Justice too long delayed until all but totally seeming denied
Was the predicament for all those who had tried and cried
Seeking only to live equal with all their neighboring Americans
This then was that something that could not be allowed to stand

Streets Ahead

Life is a confined period of time.  Who knows truly what’s next.  Even if you believe in the God of the Bible, you find that there is disagreement as to how after life happens.  With this in mind, I thought it was pretty wise when talking to a friend she pointed out that life is precious so we should waste it wisely.  Sometimes, there is a lot of truth in humor.

Streets Ahead
by Michael Doyle

There was something she said
In being streets ahead
Life is precious so waste it wisely
Or, something like that only more precisely

There is a certain sense of cool
That you won't learn in school
But in the life that teaches you
In the moment that reaches you

In a universal supply and demand
Perhaps, it was her smile that helped me understand
As she stood there in the doorway
With me thinking on all she would say

There was something she said
In being streets ahead
Life is precious so waste it wisely
Or, something like that only more precisely

There is a certain sense of cool
That never teach us in school
But in the life that teaches you
In each moment that reaches you

Thought For the Day: By Academic Freedom I Understand the Right To Search For Truth and To Publish and Teach What One Holds To Be True

“By academic freedom I understand the right to search for truth and to publish and teach what one holds to be true. This right implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true.” – Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

First Principles: The Ordaining of Law In Favor of One Part of the Nation To the Prejudice and Oppression Of Another Is Certainly …Mistaken Policy

“The ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy. An equal dispensation of protection, rights, privileges, and advantages, is what every part is entitled to, and ought to enjoy.” – Benjamin Franklin (1774)

The Temptation of Wanting Another’s Share

Based in part on Exodus 20:17:

Out of the Looking Glass/Into the Madness - Heated Temptation Pondered

The Temptation of Wanting Another's Share
by Michael Doyle

It's hard to be content in comparison
Always measuring yourself on what is done
By others when your race is your own
Only to be run in service of God's throne

Coveting what others have or what they do
Is not what measures the better for you
But keeping your heart on your own satisfaction
Is in truth always the wise course of action

All other sin stems from wanting the other
That which is had by your sister and brother
It is best to keep your eyes on your reverence
Keeping your soul safe in the assent of providence

It was this that tempted Eve's pleasure
As the serpent offered forbidden treasure
Eve succumbed  in her deep desire for more
Placing her baited hand upon sin's final door

Instead of being as Eve in her discontentment
Be instead like Paul in his rich contentment
Keeping ourselves well and happy in your share
There then is truly no need to fall for that snare

Just set your heart on the truest star
And you'll find in faith God takes you that far
You need look no further than that
And that my friends is just a natural fact

On Attempting To Be A Good Father

As Father’s Day approaches, I am thinking a lot on what it means to be a father to my two daughters.  I am woefully aware that as they approach their teenage years, there are things I might have said and done better.  I love these girls more than anything in the world.  When I let them down, it brings a tear to my eyes and a tear in my soul.  As I continue to fight to stay alive, I also do my best to be as good a father as I can.  Perhaps, I am just too damaged.

Rummu Quarry - Tired Swing

On Attempting To Be A Good Father
by Michael Doyle

My circumstances in their totality
Are disruptive to my family
I wish my daughters to know it is not by choice
That as their father, I have so little voice

Often on my knees, I am in prayer
Doing what I can to mend this tear
That as I look into my Father's face
He finds the mercy to give me strength and grace

My weaknesses have oft caused me to fail
But, I press onward hoping to prevail
Finding that forgiveness helps past the pain
And in better understanding, seeing that it's not in vain

As Father's Day approaches, I look toward Providence
That my heavenly Father might give me His guidance
Prayerful in attempting to yet bless my family
Hoping that my daughters might know all they mean to me

Sometimes like Lucifer in his proud falling
I learn that being a good father is a hard calling
So often, I've found that I don't know what to do
Only hoping, two princesses see that I strive to be good and true

Striving to be both velvet and made of steel
Following God's leadership in following His will
And that in my very best sense of full measure
Show them that they are more priceless than treasure

In all that I do my best to do, I live
To show them by example how to love and forgive
There is a certain case to be made for this vulnerability
Tears fill my eyes when I've let down my family

Thought For the Day: When Even One American – Who Has Done Nothing Wrong – Is Forced By Fear To Shut His Mind and Close His Mouth, Then All Americans Are In Peril

First Principles: The Right of the Citizens To Keep and Bear Arms Has Justly Been Considered As the Palladium of the Liberties of the Republic

“The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of the republic; since it offers a strong moral check against usurpation and arbitrary power of the rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.” – Justice Joseph Story, in Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833)

To Yet Be Wiser Than Yesterday

I can only wish, right?  We can only wish?  Well.. maybe some wishes do come true?

Demiurge - 23rd Century Thinker In a Geodesic Dome

To Yet Be Wiser Than Yesterday
by Michael Doyle

A held tongue leaves time to think
Observing those things to be observed
These often bring us to the brink
Suffering as we do the toe of the undeserved

As infinite and unchangeable as the animosity
That is swept with a witch's broom of intensity
There's a prayer whispered in my poetry
Thanking God for my blessings humbly

It seems best to think on things wonderful
Each contributing in making our life more beautiful
All of them loaned on God's own borrowed time
Each parting with a sorrow far too sublime

I end each night on my knees in prayer
As I begin each battle against a world unfair
Wondering if God might even know or care
Then laying back with eyes on ceiling, I stare

Head on pillow, I can only wish for sleep
Lost in the blackness felt ever so very deep
Getting on with the business of an early rise
And that with a little more time, I might yet be wise
