Letting An Innocent Man Die

Yes, this is still a big issue if not the biggest issue with me left over from the work for which I will always take a bit of my dignity and honor (such as it is) from.   Even one innocent person dying wrongfully as he or she is being put to death is unacceptable in my heart and mind.

During this weekend’s visitation, I had my young ladies watch Selma  and a documentary circling around the life of James Baldwin to help us come to common understanding about George Floyd, police misconduct in general, racism, and what has come before in our nation.

Then we discussed where I differ and part ways from those who choose a path of violence and destruction in the pretense that these tragic acts can somehow be right in righting the injustices of this world.  Teachable moments taught and learned from as we shared not only my thoughts as their father, but, what they see, think they see and the importance of verifying information passed out from others.

FaNg Sanctuary Island- Death Casts Its Shadows In the Heart

Letting An Innocent Man Die
by Michael Doyle

No one should ever be learning
The smell of a man burning
Taking in each breath
Knowing this awaits you at death

It can make a guilty man lie
Feeling it better that an innocent man die
Than to face that electric chair
Fear of this has been the devil's snare

Forcing the heart to give way
To just live for yet another day
Sitting there in that smoky daze
The Devil is quite certain of a weak man's ways

Men who knew maybe less than nothing
Find themselves compelled to say something
When injustice has its brutal way
The time comes soon enough for Hell to pay

Emotions will run high
With not one dry eye
When a guilty man decides with a sigh
It's better to let an innocent man die

A Champion Rides On

There are a lot of great ways out there to be involved in what will actually improve our nation and its society.  Among these is to communicate, grow, and then use your voice in effective non-violent ways.  One project that I learned about while assisting in police misconduct litigation in what feels a lifetime ago now is found here at the Innocence Project:

There are other opportunities as well.  It’s important that we keep the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments in mind and do not lose our way into anarchy and things that destroy while not making the world a better place than we found it.

Tristan & Isolde - Filling the Frame of Heroism

A Champion Rides On
by Michael Doyle

This conviction is contrary to the evidence
The testimony is questionable in its relevance
A death row inmate offers words of falsity
And obtains results which ring untrue in the community

That day, the man was home with his family
All of whom were made to wonder about the integrity
Of a system that cares little for dignity
And sends an innocent man to die in the penitentiary

Courage is not the absence of fear
It's the being scared but deciding to persevere
Those who act lacking character have their reasons
None of these will stand in God's good seasons

Growing up poorer than poor in a community
Of dirt roads and the grinding down of reality
Can grow a world of hurt but also strength of family
With family comes courage and persons of integrity

A champion rides out from the shadows
As a last hope before the modern day gallows
In a world where there is so very little hope
It is true hearts like these that help others cope

The good fights have to continue despite the cost
Or all before is all but given up as lost
It's an ancient tradition standing against adversity
And being bigger persons than hatred's intensity

Long Walk To Mercy

It’s been a long walk toward mercy and justice.  To advocate on its behalf is completely and totally right.  To protest in peaceful assembly is totally and completely right.   It’s totally wrong to burn down cities and private property and historical churches and monuments.  All lives matter.  All life is sacred.

Woodbury Falls - I'm Not A Prisoner....

Long Walk To Mercy
by Michael Doyle

There's a lot of talk
Of justice being served
But the conviction given
Was not deserved

It was sure enough
A case of mistaken identity
The bitter fruit of which
Is sadly part of our legacy

An innocent man
Driven to tears
Hoping against hope
Just to persevere

Looking for a lawyer's
Fancy talk and elocution
To somehow obtain
A stay of his execution

A couple of AME choir boys
Hanging out on death row
Pressing on the upward way
It's a long road to mercy, you know

It could have been
You or even me
But for God's hand
It's that plain to see

Crossed lines
Of vapid demarcation
Capital punishment
As the warden's invitation

There's an indignity
In how many are treated
But a good man
Won't be easily defeated

A Lone Bagpiper

All of us are coming out of the isolation spawned by Covid-19 into a world changed by virus and by riotous disruption.  In some ways, this is good.  In some ways this is bad.  In all ways, this is a world changed.

Inverness City 2020 - High Kirk Church - We Are In This Together

A Lone Bagpiper
by Michael Doyle

A lone bagpiper plays the French Square
He and the walker are only ones there
Things there are that must be taught
Among these is to tell the truth as we ought

When authorities lie, cheap rumors spread
With all sorts of notions playing in our heads
The beginning edge is the lack of transparency
This has led to much doubt while needing clarity

Simulations in the jump of rapid mutation
Leads to questions of genetic segmentations
While Covid-19 has not been as deadly as 1918
It has its unique lethality for human beings

Without effective testing, it's a game of chance
To say what the odds are and what will enhance
Society's efforts toward reducing into eradication
Of the impact of this virus through immunization

So say the alleged leaders of our world and nations
But without a more and greater, sensible explanation
A good deal of the people will prefer herd immunity
This confused response seems destined to be our legacy

Thought For the Day: Throughout History, It Has Been…the Silence of the Voice of Justice…That Has Made It Possible For Evil To Triumph

“Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” – Haile Selassie

First Principles: Passion Never Fails To Wrest the Scepter From Reason

“In all very numerous assemblies, of whatever character composed, passion never fails to wrest the sceptre from reason. … Had every Athenian citizen been a Socrates, every Athenian assembly would still have been a mob.” – Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 55 (February 15, 1788)

We live in a republic not a ‘democracy’.  Please see the US Constitution itself as well as the Federalist Papers on the dangers of ‘democracy’.  To give the vote to all without wisdom breeds demagoguery which in turn brings rise to anarchy, chaos and disrupts society which historically eventually brings rise to tyranny.  Please think on this and review the referenced material starting with Socrates onward to obtain a fuller understanding of a fundamental component of our republic that is all but overlooked in the modern to post-modernist ages.   Assuredly, it’s not just a matter of semantics.

Thought For the Day: Finish Each Day and Be Done With It

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

First Principles: Every Man Ought To Be Protected In Worshipping the Deity According to the Dictates of His Own Conscience

“I have often expressed my sentiments, that every man, conducting himself as a good citizen, and being accountable to God alone for his religious opinions, ought to be protected in worshipping the Deity according to the dictates of his own conscience.” – George Washington

The Having of Something To Say

What makes a poet?

Home, Sweet, Home - Time To Write A Poem

The Having Something To Say
by Michael Doyle

Sitting here in the middle of a think
Mentally stumbling slipping toward brink
Wondering what it is that makes a poet
Certainly certain that I don't know it

I think it's the having of something to say
For some reason that seems very right today
It's more than finding two words that rhyme
That strikes me as some sort of artistic crime

Then I hear another bad poem drone on and on
Finding myself wishing I was already gone
Suddenly realizing there's something to prose
And blank verse is like that another named rose

Perhaps better as an essay if properly constructed
But grammar is more often than not a bit destructed
As so many prefer to rant and rave bravely aloud
It strikes me as a wonder how it makes them proud

Bragging on writing things that come across lewd
I'd say write what you know but that seems rude
So I quietly listen and pretend it's worth praising
As I hope to myself that no one sees my eyebrows raising

Thought For the Day: Injustice Anywhere Is A Threat To Justice Everywhere

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Injustice effects and impacts us all.  It differs little rather it’s police brutality (the majority of which at last study I have read is committed against whites more than blacks truth be told – see the multiple studies that came out and during the King v. State of California and the City of Los Angeles) or rather it be rioters beating a store owner to death for trying to protect his and other people’s businesses.  Injustice should always be properly and strongly advocated against.  But, let’s not miss the point that ALL LIVES MATTER.. not one subdivision of the human race, but all of the human race. Make no mistake of it.  Rather you believe in Adam and Eve or a protozoa that somehow evolved into present shades of mankind, we all have common ancestors.  We all bleed red.  We all want to leave the world a better place than we have found it.
