First Principles: The Right To Freedom Being A Gift of God…May Be Best Understood By…Studying the New Testament

“The right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, it is not in the power of man to alienate this gift and voluntarily become a slave… These may be best understood by reading and carefully studying the institutes of the great Law Giver and Head of the Christian Church, which are to be found clearly written and promulgated in the New Testament.” – Samuel Adams, in Rights of the Colonists (November 11, 1772)

Checking My To-Dos

A little something that was kind of fun to come up with on my guitar:

Cherish Melody

Checking My To-Dos
by Michael Doyle

Checking my to-dos
Off of my list
Brushing by your lips
That needed kissed

Baby, don't you cry
We're all dogs sometimes
Baby, don't ask why
A taste of rum-rickey lime

Squeezed into that dress
Girl, you know, I confess
You're making me a mess
Can I get a witness

Checking my to-dos
Off of my list
Brushing by your lips
That needed kissed

Shake me up
And pull me in
Drinking from your cup
Chase it back, yet again

When I shut my eyes
I trace your face
Spread thin with your sighs
Yours is my warm embrace

Checking my to-dos
Off of my list
Brushing by your lips
That needed kissed

The Good of the Middle

Complex isn’t it?  Good in the bad; bad in the good.  And we swear our allegiance to one or the other while seemingly never getting it completely right.

The Empire of Dreaming Books - A Day Well Spent

The Good of the Middle
by Michael Doyle

Is man good
Or, is man bad
All I know
Is that most days
I walk somewhere in the middle

I try to do good
Sometimes, I do evil
There's a long way to go
Before I am who I wanted to be
It's been this way since I was little

With a change in perspective
Taken in the collective
Man may be born good
And yet become evil
As time twists priority

With that perspective
Some say humanity's collective
Might be born to be bad
And yet some become good
With a breath of morality

Before we know it
The candle is burned
With or without our lessons learned
Slipped into the grave
One size fits all it seems

First Principles: A Constitution Founded On These Principles…Makes the Common People Brave and Enterprising

“A constitution founded on these principles introduces knowledge among the people, and inspires them with a conscious dignity becoming freemen; a general emulation takes place, which causes good humor, sociability, good manners, and good morals to be general. That elevation of sentiment inspired by such a government, makes the common people brave and enterprising. That ambition which is inspired by it makes them sober, industrious, and frugal.” – John Adams, in Thoughts On Government (1776 )

A Haunting Place

Ghosts don’t require ancient castles or haunted Victorian homes.  Sometimes the most haunting place is alone inside a person’s mind.

Dathuil - Gallery of Art - Singing to the Mirror

A Haunting Place
by Michael Doyle

Inside my mind is a haunting place
Filled with missed memories I wish to embrace
Inside myself is a self that I have lost
And while others count coup, I count the loss

A sweet assassin of my contentment
Kept cut off like a defended compartment
The chains that rattle this inner ghost
Are the things I've kept hidden the most

There are so many things said about me
That maybe even the truest heart would doubt me
Moments like these instill my humbled nature
And are those they way will help me to mature

The contradictions inherent in all they have said
Swirled around, rolling down until ricocheting in my head
There in all of my shaded impossibility
Somewhere, somehow is the very truth of me

Late at night, I lay awake in cross-examination
Of all these comparted parts that led to alienation
But in the break of morning light, I still arise
To peer into the mirror alone seeing on me in my eyes

Pranking Into Vandalism

Started watching a show about a prankster who at least appears from the first episode to have been maybe framed.  I say seems and maybe because I fell asleep.  Woke up at the start of the second episode.  Still think I managed to hatch a relevant poem somehow. ..

Fusion 2019 - Vandal Mural

Pranking Into Vandalism
by Michael Doyle

In the hard facts of vandalism
There is a sense of radicalism
In the conceptions of vulgarity
There is only limited hilarity

Born to lose in a gang of fun
The way-back boys left one undone
The evidence against had its prevalence
But the changes made held great relevance

Growing up in the unavoidable YouTube age
Still, some digital move are a whole other page
Meant to be done with great retention
And not very probable for those with low attention

Truth knows what it knows in a thing of jealousy
Tagged at it is in the roll of history
Messages sent and taken in two different ways
Can lead and often does lead to interesting days

A set up feeling like yesterday's school yard
Where extra credit is earned with a discard
Of books stacked up high for catch up reading
Like a cloud burst that needs hay seeding

All That Mistaken Jazz

In this day and age, there is so little convention of civility that is kept and each indiscretion perhaps leads further to those things that act in concert to break down society.

Savoy Ballroom & Swing Era Museum -Jazzman

All That Mistaken Jazz
by Michael Doyle

Conversations kept in privacy
For the sake of space and dignity
Focus is kept on things of importance
And seldom given up on random chance

Winners, they say, don't ever quit
Yet, losses are had that don't fit
Into all of the midst of trite phrases
Go the busy people through their odd phases

When dreams become shattered and broken
Over words never meant to be spoken
Life becomes but a whimper of the sad
The price paid for treasures never had

We live as we desperately dream, alone
Unless we can get past hearts of stone
It's a matter that goes beyond pragmatism
Felt deeply as it is as if animal magnetism

Said as if it is with some just hesitation
Why is there then an avoidance of question
What is it then that you want the most
Asks the hidden voice of the genuine host
