21st Century Goings On

Dedicated to George Floyd and all victims of brutality in hope that we may yet find our way to a more just and less cruel world shared in our walk of humanity.  Marvin Gaye would probably be rolling over in his grave in the scorching war of Antifa and other radicals going on when we should be embraced in our common bonds over an unjustified homicide that has happened.

We need to find better answers, not more loss and death and hurt that painfully leaves its scars on the streets and souls of America. (Yes it does sound a bit better with my guitar in the background.. but this is what I have to share, I hope it will be forgiven.)

The Titans Revisited

21 Century Goings On
by Michael Doyle

Brother, brother, brother
You say you're tired of dying
Mother, mother, mother
I hear you sadly sighing
Grown so weary from despair
Certain that the world is uncaring

Father, father, father
Dr. King was certainly right
When he said we'd get no farther
If we never see the light
Rioting is not a good answer
Lawlessness eats away like cancer

You see, only love can conquer hate
I swear that it's not too late
Together we can find a better way
To bring more love to our day
We need to rid the world of its brutality
Talk to me in terms of our humanity

Tell me now, what's going on
Do you think this is really being strong
For God's sake, what's going on
Put down your rage and brick
We both know it won't do the trick
Let's walk together in the light
Together we can make things just and right

Brother, brother, brother
We all know hate is wrong
Locking arm in arm with each other
It's only just that we all belong
And you know have to find our way
To find some understanding here today

Burning down the streets of our city
Only brings to us all more brutality
Come on and talk your truth to me
Tell me you can see our shared humanity
Please dear God tell me what's going on
We got to be strong, tell me now...

                      …What's going on?

Notions of Landscaping

Continuing in the series on one of my favorite hobbies, photography:

La Frontera - Sunrise Lighthouse

Notions of Landscaping
by Michael Doyle

Still life perfected in the land
Just you, the light and what you understand
Arriving early, just to stay late
Apply your imagination and it will be great

A shadowed land of prompted visualization
Probes the golden light of your fascination
Up with the rooster to catch the light
And then again as the day fades into night

The rural speaks in its quietness
Dressed up casual in its warm gentleness
While city life goes buzzing on by
As life happens on the cosmopolitan fly

The stage is nearly always set
Waiting for the players we won't forget
Vertical thirds define the frame
That adds the flair to defining the same

Beyond the cake and into the icing
It's a story told of our devising
It's the something extra that pays to be seen
The story told that leads its meaning

Remember that photos taken from aerial
Can lend that something extra to your photo's feel
The dance of life must taken in its layer
If you want the zest to be seen in its flair

Conversely, lowering means less landscape not more
But brings your subject dramatically to the fore
Adding shapes of complexity is nothing devious
It just helps in going beyond the overstated obvious

Taking a photo of the same ole beautiful sunset
Can have an added layer turning east without regret
The world becomes awash in a reflection of red
In a trick of light from which should never be fled

Whether stormy or not, let this be understood
It's all about capturing light in a way that's good
Always looking for those things bringing animation
The movement will capture the needed fascination

Thought For the Day: Nonviolence Is the Most Potent Weapon Available To Oppressed People In Their Struggle For Freedom and Justice

“(R)iots are socially destructive and self-defeating. I’m still convinced that nonviolence is the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom and justice. I feel that violence will only create more social problems than they will solve.”  – Martin Luther King Jr

First Principles: Without Liberty, Law Loses Its Nature…and Becomes Oppression. Without Law, Liberty…Becomes Licentiousness

“Without liberty, law loses its nature and its name, and becomes oppression. Without law, liberty also loses its nature and its name, and becomes licentiousness.” – James Wilson (1790)

Today and Always

Six months ago today, I met my love dressed in the guise of an elf with a high interest in photography, kindness in her heart, beauty in her soul, endowed with a laugh that woke the core of my soul and knew right then and there, we needed to build a memory.  I am blessed and know this to be true.

Yūrei - Exploring the Forest In Japan

Today and Always
by Michael Doyle

If I had a wish for a falling star
It would be the hope that we'd make it this far
Thanks for never giving up on me
And all the priceless moments of beauty

Promises made with right intention
Keeper of my most devoted attention
I love and bless the day we met
You've made my life as priceless as it can get

Yours is the spark of joy and happiness
That takes me beyond words with bliss
You amaze me with your brand of beautiful
It must be magic in how you make all things more wonderful

I'm so proud to have you as my girlfriend
The partner and spice of life on who I can depend
Nearly every time I turn around, you give reason
For me to be happy in every turn of season

If I could live life more than once or twice
I know that I'd never find anyone quite as nice
My wishes came true the day I met you
And now every single breath beats a heart so true

Happy Anniversary on this day and all days!
I pledge again to cherish and love you always
If I have my dreams, you'll be my end of days
And I will always cherish and love you in all ways

The Journey Back

Things of memory have the worth of time revealed in the quiet moments of our hearts.

Wild Moon - The Full Moon Rising Has Nothing On This Beauty

The Journey Back
by Michael Doyle

Somewhere in a cup of coffee
Is the reflection that is memory
Somehow a photograph starts to show
All of the little things a heart should know

Crushed into her role of humility
She tries to prove her utility
As some sort of half measure
Of the all of her to truly treasure

Cruelty says, only kin is kin
These words eat under her skin
She needs to find her worth within
Then, maybe then, love wont be just pretend

True love once given is never forgot
Although there are times when you ought
A mind made up ever so very firmly
Is never so strong as a heart given warmly

Disappointments along life's troubled way
Offer up the graveyards of lost yesterdays
Hope and idleness dance in their illusion
That to particularly practical folks only seems confusion

Truer words were never so openly spoken
Than the wishing it so of a heart once broken
The best use one has in another is the truth
All of the truth and none of the lies of our youth

Children are not burdens but living dreams
With their fanciful hopes and fantastic schemes
Every day should be lived as if to remind
That some things of childhood should never be left behind

First Principles: All Sober Inquirers After Truth… Pagan and Christian, Have Declared That the Happiness of Man, As Well As His Dignity, Consists In Virtue

“We ought to consider what is the end of government before we determine which is the best form. Upon this point all speculative politicians will agree that the happiness of society is the end of government, as all divines and moral philosophers will agree that the happiness of the individual is the end of man….All sober inquirers after truth, ancient and modern, pagan and Christian, have declared that the happiness of man, as well as his dignity, consists in virtue.” – John Adams, in Thoughts on Government (1776)

Robot Poet Haiku

Though not traditional, it seems about timely, doesn’t it?

Surreal Gallery - Export Robot

Robert Poet Haiku
by Michael Doyle

Thunder words abound
In solid walls of stacked sound
Robots write haiku

Transliteration
Machine language without rhyme
Bites of the informed

They call it not real
But even robots can feel
And write from the heart

The Lateness of the Hour

Returning back to a promised project that was set down for a time and based in part on The Twilight Zone, Season 2, Episode 8:

The Dirty Grind - Jaycatt Nico On Keys

The Lateness of the Hour
by Michael Doyle

In a labyrinth of the mind's imprecision
We travel into another place of dimension
Discontentedly fuming on a stormy night
A daughter looks on memories trying to get it right

Her environment is perfected and yet quite wrong
What seems something wonderful does not belong
Spelling out the references in their specific design
She feels this to be disturbing and anything but fine

Nothing escapes her recitation of deliberation
As she notes the inescapable quality of too much perfection
She'd like a little difference with something left to chance
The safe predictability of her world only knows one dance

Too much sameness is simply the ticking of decay
The clock hands turn but each second feels the same way
The secrets lived in turning off exposure to the outside
Leaves all the world passing by in mechanical glide

A stumble down the stairs challenging sort of a speech
Is given to her father and heard by all within hearing's reach
Responded to with pride in the uniqueness of his creations
The father strives to be unruffled at her piqued irritation

Living there in that menagerie of automated machines
Built to artistic perfection in this insular dream
Untouched by the ravages of time in their superlative
Yet, in the end even perfection is quietly relative

Even robots come with their measured, metered cost
And when shown the bill, this will not be lost
Tick, tick, tick and the tock of another passing day
Spent once again in its perfected day kind of a way

Insulated as she is, the daughter presses on unhappy
And speaks on this to her parents quite harshly
She has never had to face war, prejudice or poverty
Her father prattles on about asylum and its security

She sees her life as lived in a mental mausoleum
And all of the perfection perfected as in a museum
Survival as vegetable might serviceably survive
But petulantly meant for her to strive just to be alive

As she demonstrates that the controller is controlled
In her jaded anger, there is very little to be consoled
The robots have been intricately, intentionally designed
And as time has gone on, they've become ever more refined

Each of these has been created as a grand creature
All of whom though unique share in the one feature
Of having their own mind and living in part by own will
Deciding to be pleasant or in degrees of being shrill

Equipped with memory tracks recalled as if being real
Though none of these back stories truly conceal
Anything any more than tied in bits of mental inventory
Worn the very moment 'born' in the scientist's infirmary

She sees them as nothing but useful yet drab toys
And all counter arguments against are simply noise
Like a willful child, she demands to be set free
All of this against the chorus of a falsified humanity

A stone thrown in an otherwise perfect pond
Her contempt for which is three steps beyond
Dismayed by a love that makes her unable to feel
She cannot rest until she confronts what's real

The something not right in that which is then felt
Is the cruel twist of fate in her hand dealt
All of the memories recounted to her by her father
Are all but falsities, not really lived by his daughter

In the end, she wants to know what this makes her
Though clearly she knows in her heart what this infers
Her father understands as the brewer of her creation
He cannot stand her feeling empty absent of all sensation

With a twist of a knob she is instantly recreated
Becoming a different automaton differently situated
From daughter into maid constrained by his own hand
Though he had rather wished she might understand

Worn out by the rigors of a world of competition
Distraught by the modern neuroses in their repetition
It's a craving satisfied for a no strings serenity
The lateness of that hour ill affords the comforts of family
