Happy Mother’s Day, Too

My ex-wife could never gracefully receive a present.  Not just from me but from our daughters, they tell me.  Still, despite all, there is one gift I would yet give her on this day particularly after the reminders received over this weekend of how wonderful our little girls have been so far and are turning out to be even more so.  That is my gratitude for her part in this and my forgiveness for the past wrongs done.  There is not a moment in talking to the beautiful, kind hearted little ladies that are my daughters, that I don’t see their grace under fire and the beauty that they bring to this world of ours.

Lights & Sirens - Mother & Child

Happy Mother's Day, Too
by Michael Doyle

It's a sweet sort of fascination
The girls and I in our conversation
While on a road trip across the state
After getting bumped off the inter-state

Slowing down on a long country road
Telling our tales that need to be told
It's easy to listen and easier still to see
The best parts of their loving company

So often mirroring the good, bad and ugly
Of the things they reveal about their family
It's said apples don't fall far from the tree
And from what I've seen, I hardily agree

Sure each of us needs God's grace and forgiveness
But I'd never choose other than to live this
Looking into their eyes, I feel God's nearness
While the road goes on forever, it brings me bliss

Tomorrow comes with a wake up bringing Mother's Day
I think on that as I watch the them sing and play
It's hard to forgive someone who has done me so much wrong
But that's nearly forgotten as I hear their song

Quietly thinking on how their mother keeps it together
While a pandemic is going on that may not get better
Thinking of how the girls are vibrantly happy and whole
To that extent, I am grateful for their mother's soul

After a day's drive and a couple short hikes
On the way back, I am think on the things that they like
As they kid and joke around, even laughing at some of mine
I find some grace from their mother in how they still shine

The youngest is in the back asking for the radio
So that we can listen and sing along as we go
Back on the highway, we are returned again
It's easy to marvel at them as my daughters and friends

With a click of a button in search of stations
We're heading back homeward to our destinations
When suddenly Christmas songs begin to joyfully play
The youngest jokes about how we make history every day

This Mother's Day eve has been among the best
As we burst out laughing, I realized we are blessed
At least part of that is to their mother her own due
And so today, I wish her a happy Mother's Day, too!

...and I forgive her for the damage she's done

First Principles: Securing Peace Is One of the Most Powerful Instruments Is Our Rising Prosperity

“If we desire to insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known, that we are at all times ready for War.” – George Washington, in his Annual Message (December 1793)

Depths of Me and You

It’s all about connection.  The deeper I dig in, the deeper I want this to go.  Every moment is a new revelation to cherish.

The Morningbrew Poetry- Desiree and I

Depths of Me and You
by Michael Doyle

Taking our time
To build our foundation
It would be a crime
To make this about infatuation

Getting to know
The real you
It's been starting to show
Our love is true

Can't help thinking about
The depths of me and you
You know that I don't doubt
Our love is true

Focused on our zone
A world of me and you
Times spent alone
It feels so true

Laughter we share
You're as special as my sun
Living as we share
Without you I am alone

Two hearts together
Forming closely into one
Your heart makes me better
You are my moon and sun

Can't help thinking about
The depths of me and you
You know I don't doubt
Our love is true

Focused on our zone
A world of me and you
Times spent alone
It feels so true

Consent of the Governed

Continuing in a series of poems about the establishment of our republican form of government and life under the rule of law as set out in our constitution:

Learning Virtuale -My America Might Be Ragged, But, She's Still Standing

Consent of the Governed
by Michael Doyle

The standards are set by the Declaration of Independence
In all of its truths and its just transcendence
That a just government depends on the People's consent
And the People's rights are unalienably permanent

Both of these can be held in a state of tension
This is why these so urgently require our attention
Slavery for example was just such a deep subject
In which we found and find these to be rather abject

Publius pointed out the historical sense of our lesson
That there is nothing new and even less to guessing
That self-government can indeed work for the People
Gathered together under the dome of freedom's steeple

Past vacillation of the extremes of democracy
Kept so many imprisoned between tyranny and anarchy
In re-examining the classics, we begin to discern
That the order of society depends on what we learn

This is the thing about learning from the past
It must be decided what will work and will last
Things that we need to know and their just improvement
Are what must be added to the science of government

Such things as do make up man's finest hour
Are the distribution of the balance of power
The checks and balances of patent ambition
And representation with it's own inhibitions

Another component which is almost legendary
Is the necessity of an independent judiciary
All of these are improvements on the old
A bit of the best on which we must be told

To be the powerful and needed political means
By which a republican government of human beings
Is best kept despite all of our human imperfection
Avoiding all the deficiencies of our detection

This then is what it means to be republican
In turn, this is what it means to be American
Unchecked power is an invitation to defeat
The very means by which we lose our seat

There at the table of freedom and liberty
Under the rule of law this must always be
Kept in the ways of legislative representation
And an executive also voted in for our nation

Thought For the Day: Love Is Friendship That Has Caught Fire

“Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.” – Ann Landers

A Star Wars Lesson In Liberty

May 4th has become, for some, a day of tribute to Star Wars as “May the 4th Be With You” day.   When the day passed recently, it gave me some cause to think about how we around the planet so willing and willfully surrendered at least for a time our civil liberties in the cause of health security.

Star Wars: The Untold Story - Coordinates Taken

A Star Wars Lesson In Liberty
by Michael Doyle

Good versus evil plays on the silver screen
This then is what Star Wars really means
In a time as old or older than Father Time
The movie's shallowness is yet sublime

There in the treasured original trilogy
Was a story laid bare with moral ambiguity
There is a stark truth in black and white
Why not reveal the truth in plain sight

Democracy becomes as it is a useful tool
In turning Anakin into Vader, reel to spool
Persuaded that Jedi good is bad in quest for power
Darkness creeps in to steal the Empire's hour

In a strained quest for a manipulated need for security
The Republic loses it soul and all of it's liberty
In this we watch a people enchained and overturned
In the oldest lesson man continues never to learn

Awed By Living

Life is for the living.  Let’s do it well!

Awed By Living
by Michael Doyle

Counting the things of needed gratitude
Instead of too often taking an attitude
At and of those things of circumstance
Forgetting to realize each moment's chance

Living life by bumper sticker mentality
We accept the platitudes of sentimentality
But somehow miss out on life's rightness
Too often blinded by moments of brightness

There is an awesomeness in all of life's wonder
Stumbling headfirst into too many blunders
Cliché ridden in an endurance of the rat race
Instead of enjoying the sacredness of each embrace

Living as though a child fully blessed
Spontaneously engaged without being second guessed
Not letting life's bring downs destroy openness
Let's instead realize that life has its blissfulness

Let the light appear cutting through the darkness
Let smiles erase the drag of gravity's harshness
Let dreams soar until too large to pretend to ignore
On reaching this bliss, let's dare to ask just a little more
