Finding the Good

I had a discussion with someone many years ago about why I wanted two princesses to be familiar with the literary classics from which there were derived the 5′ Shelf of Books aka Harvard Classics.  After all, the contention was, everything they need to learn they do at school.   After I picked up my jaw from the ground in dismay, I just never addressed the topic with that person again.

Finding the Good
by Michael Doyle

The culture of reading has become depleted
Ill spoken of almost if no longer needed
The words read teach us how to discern
There is so much out there to learn

It's a glory of the human soul to understand fiction
The truths laid out in well told depiction
Imagination knows us fully through these pretenses
Teaching us to come to know through all of our senses

There is a continuity of perceptions of consistency
And much to be gained through verbal historicity
The experience and wisdom to be heard and seen
Are the best of things that come to be human beings

Shakespeare's "The Tempest" brings a world of imagination
Created in songs, sonnets, books and plays of creation
Some of these are things to remember and others not
But then how should you choose which should be forgot

There is on certainty without any hesitation
That is that most important things require questions
Implicit in its all is the finding of the good
To the greatest extent to which we've understood

"The future," said Churchill," though imminent is obscure"
It's only through its resolution does it become secure
Neglected though it is too often in the tainted ways of man
Each of us learns through exposure and then does as we can

The principles learned from classic literary fiction
Are applicable to life's many mysteries and frictions
Despite all the daily smoke that comes from confusion
The story teller lifts the veil from our illusions

There is a right and wrong opened to investigation
Visible to us in our life's many and varied observations
The imaginary world somehow rises above the commotion
Artistically putting choices of reasons and emotions

Education draws out a keen role for the capable
In putting forth truths that make us more able
It is these assertions of our every nuanced meaning
That make each of us best as humans sincerely being

First Principles: The Prosperity of Commerce Is Now Perceived and Acknowledged By All Enlightened Statemen As the Most Productive Source of National Wealth

“The prosperity of commerce is now perceived and acknowledged by all enlightened statesmen to be the most useful as well as the most productive source of national wealth, and has accordingly become a primary object of its political cares.” – Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Papers No. 12

Tribalisms of Empathy

Society’s kindness has gone markedly down as we tend to polarize and communicate online via social media more.   It’s sort of sparking a lot of interest, particularly in these times of social isolation,  in getting folks to begin dialoging more in real time, face to face.

Alpha Tribe -Disinterested Elephant

Tribalisms of Empathy
by Michael Doyle

Under the umbrella of empathy
Are provided nuances of connection
It's a challenge to sympathy
But catching that contagion's direction

Empathetic concerns burn into differences
A million points of view in inference
Sharing the realm of mixed feelings
Wobbled as they are in fluid reality

Pushing forward in acts of kindness
In the pain of a world full of blindness
Started into startled inhibition
By the selfishness of strident ambition

Looking out for oneself is part of life's brutality
When really what's needed is community
We are, after all, all in this together
Knowing this and acting on it makes life better

As I was walking on the edge of a local marsh
I was thinking on how enforced isolation is harsh
And if that harshness is simple physiology
Or, do the mirrored feelings go beyond biology

Wearing the genes of our heredity
I slip down the gradient of empathy
Watching as society diminishes in communication
There is a just fear in my heart for our nation

Meanness is on the rise; kindness is in decline
Polarized as a nation in ways we should not refine
Trust gets harder and life is grown impersonal
As angry voices find their disconnecting control

In this prevalence of anonymity
Our world grows colder in its loss of empathy
Straight text; no voice, leads to dehumanization
Breaking down further our morass of communication

Clues missed that make up the parts us so human
Once removed, lend boldness as it sadly can
But not to the best or even slightly better
As we forget that we're in this together

A Faithful Companion

Based in part on 2 Sam. 7:29:

House of Prayer - Living the Golden Rule

A Faithful Companion
by Michael Doyle

In a world filled with grief and acrimony
God wants to bless our lives through testimony
Loving us unconditionally and wanting our best
He walks beside us ensuring that we're blessed

Of the blessings is the promise He made to us each
Jesus' promise to never forsake His flock within reach
In our every struggle and in all of our endeavors
Jesus stands beside us all as our personal savior

In these moments remembered that God brought us this far
As we have followed His ways following His true star
In all our doings, it is the Lord's name of magnification
It falls on us to acknowledge this in our appreciation

I seek that the Lord will in all ways bless my home
And all of my family in knowing we are never alone
It is a good, earnest thing to know that we can
Sitting before the Lord though we are but woman and man

Looking back on the relationships of all of our past
We look toward the future in all the hopes that will last
Moving forward each step of the way in joyful supplication
We seek God's good will in all for our best satisfaction

Though at times we are asking what it is that we should do
We must keep God's counsel and His word in our constant view
As the love of a Father insists on all undivided good
We approach life knowing that it is as it must be understood

It is then up to us to keep the good habits that keep us alive
Not merely getting by or over or under just to say we survive
Instead seeking blessings actively in what our homes choose
Seeking the right guidance of which we know not to refuse

Living lives of discipline and seeking in all ways our purity
Forgiving us as we forgive others and keeping our history
Not as something to weigh us down but as to lift us up in our days
Keeping the Word of God as our own in keeping all of His ways

God knows and we know that if we will listen we will hear
As we pray to Him all our hopes, dreams and at times of fear
We believers live the good life that we have in supplication
All the days of our life to be lived in fullest appreciation

Every child of God has the promise of everlasting God within
Though at times life comes at us and we feel we're wearing thin
Neither forgotten nor ever shall he forsake as in obedience
To Him as we live walking our days under stewardship and guidance

Guided through God's eye, listening in our every circumstance
We live in joy in our wisdom shown to us in all His providence
We ask; we trust; we wait and then in all humility we obey
Each day's new beginning is that of God's promises along our way

In so doing, we find ourselves sealed in our enabling power
To strengthen us in all we do in all of our many living hours
In all that we must do we must carefully listen to God's plan
He most certainly has a plan for every woman and every man

In every moment we find that good or bad we reap as we sow
This is the absolute truth as every seeking soul must know
Understanding in our obedience and reliance that we get done
All that God requires as we live under His moon and His sun

Sowing the goodness in our lives in our fullest obedience
Never putting aside the ought or the should as expedience
Our is an awesome God who has in mind that we will find our best
It is in so living that we can expect and be truly blessed

When things happen we do not quite understand, we seek the lesson
This God of ours will never be one to leave us along and guessing
We live forgiven and in and through His love faithful always
In giving to us what we need as it comes to pass through our days

We gather at the foot of the Cross despite our indecisions
Living our best lives despite our aim's imprecision
Secured by God's only begotten Son finding temporal end at the cross
And providing our salvation through His momentary loss

Thought For the Day: It Is Wrong For Anyone, Anywhere To Believe In Anything Absent Sufficient Evidence

“It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” – William Kingdon Clifford, mathematician and philosopher (4 May 1845-1879)

It takes a strong contrarian to look at all the impossibilities of life on our planet, particularly of mankind and not see the overwhelming evidence for a god, if not the God.  This evidence being abundantly had with the merest of empirical observations of the odds, the question remaining is which God.  That takes a great deal of thinking and then yes faith.  Some arrive there through faith then thinking.  The importance is the arrival not how you get there.  All the same, I liked this quote today as it is suitable in these particular times and the divergent views held on so many topics.

With the Turning of the Screw

Legend is replete of those who live and die by the sword, all in the name of honor and glory.  It is a noble story.

Bladerunner City Offworld Colony - Looking Back On Lessons Learned

With the Turning of the Screw
by Michael Doyle

Bitterness born of grief
The warrior knows his relief
Penance or fate
Before the fight comes too late

His sword will again taste
Life ended with some haste
Knowing his own patronage
He comes to reclaim his heritage

He comes to regain his home
The land calling to his bones
His will be the honor and glory
That is a warrior's story

These things run ever deep
For the tears he secretly weeps
As rich as the blood in his veins
Revenge and restoration are all that remains

The sword will rule this land
A noble realm in his command
Where there is nothing left to do
Securing the land with the turning of the screw

An Examination of Novels

When it comes to fiction, there is no greater work of prose than the novel.

Starry Night Island - Reader's View

An Examination of Novels
by Michael Doyle

A fiction in prose of a certain extent
Presented in many ways of palatable content
How further might this become defined
These classics of literature suitably refined

50,000 plus words put into a story
Blazing before our eyes in all their glory
So many forms and so many styles
A double helix of realism and metafiction's smiles

There really is no sort of true division
Between art and real life in all of its diversions
There are so many ways of imaginative narrative
All of which off their best voices in superlative

Much of this is journaled in forms of understanding
How human beings are complicated and demanding
Modes of modality starting with mythology
And varied across perspectives in their chronology

Novels were once pretenses at mock journalism
The starkness of the alleged given toward professionalism
Though of course, these were once things of romance
Set as popular tales of mankind's varied circumstance

When Hamlet died, the world shrank into it's place
Mortality is something that all heroes embrace
All of the ordinary moments shone into extraordinary
These are the things of dreams, love and filled with irony
