The Colors of Intensity

Self isolation is proving interesting.  Continuing in thoughts on photography and the capture of light in general….

The Colors of Intensity
by Michael Doyle

From the blues of a snowy day
To the reds of sunsets along the way
Subject to light, try as we might
Differs all days and nights

Our minds self correct toward white
Most of the ways we filter light
Yet be it the gray blue of ice
Refracted rays find ways to suffice

Redness can imply danger
Dramatically driven by the stranger
The light spectrum enhances vision
As each warmth and coolness lends precision

With the flick of a button's interpretation
Of light as seen and then in our imagination
The White Balance let's the photographer decide
Which mood gives the best feeling and most pride

Each situation has it's own calling
Depending on how the light is falling
Warmth and coolness bring their meaning
In all the varieties of their being

In this world's immensity
There is an expressive latitude
In the heighten bits of intensity
Each to be chosen with specificity

Softer light brings its saturation
Contrary to the harsh light of our imagination
Always aware of our natural limitations
This brings more smiles than lamentations

Simple Saturday

Day 17 of Na/GloPoWriMo 2020 invites us to poetically examine the simple pleasures that make up the Saturdays of our souls.

The Poets Library - Poets On A Roof Top II

Simple Saturday
by Michael Doyle

Simply Saturday
Could be no other way
But over coffee or tea
To share our poetry

There at the table
As best we're able
Gathered together
Whatever the weather

The words fulfill
As souls reveal
The good and the bad
Whether happy or sad

The feelings we share
Laying it all bare
Given in love and care
Just being there

Listening as we give
Reading as we live
Traces of our minds
We trail a bit behind

While giving our heart
While thoughts depart
And we simply feel
The souls that reveal

The things that moved
Hurt or somehow improved
All the words spill out
Be it a cry or a shout

I am thankful for grace
As I look into the face
Of those brave enough
To speak truth enough

Each of those who speak
Giving just a bit of peek
Into what is their best
Saturday brings its rest

Thought For the Day: To Love Another Person Is To See the Face of God

“Love would never be a promise of a rose garden unless it is showered with light of faith, water of sincerity and air of passion. Sometimes we make love with our eyes. Sometimes we make love with our hands. Sometimes we make love with our bodies. Always we make love with our hearts. If I could reach up and hold a star for every time you’ve made me smile, the entire evening sky would be in the palm of my hand. To love another person is to see the face of God.” – Victor Hugo

First Principles: The Plant of Liberty Is So Tender That It Cannot Thrive In the Neighborhood of Slavery

“Ye men of sense and virtue – Ye advocates for American Liberty, rouse up and espouse the cause of humanity and general liberty. Bear a testimony against a vice which degrades human nature, and dissolves that universal tie of benevolence which should connect all children of men together in one great family – The plant of liberty is of so tender a nature, that it cannot thrive long in the neighborhood of slavery.” – Benjamin Rush, On Slavekeeping (1773)

Owed To A Non-Living Killer

An attempt at both blank verse which I never quite understand and a virus that apparently isn’t going away so it might be wise to understand, right?

Mathematical Art, Escher's Relativity & Seifert Surface - Negative Curvature

Owed To A Non-Living Killer
by Michael Doyle

A world cast into lockdown
Optimism turns into frown
Coronavirus Disease 2019
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
Coronavirus Two
What does it really mean?
What sense do we make of this?
Me and you

I've never felt more dumb
Sars-Cov-2
Attacks the lungs through mutation
Emerging in December to our frustration
A fisherman market in Wuhan
It's difficult to understand
This is not genetically a flu
Our immune systems cannot easily subdue

This is not even truly a living thing
Despite the woe these particles bring
There is no DNA
Only Messenger RNA
Like a parasite it comes to steal
Its needed growth from living cells

Spiked crowns of insertion
Strike and attack in the infection
Morphogenesis is the method
That creates this madness

Yet, simple soap and water
Breaks down the viral structure
Disrupting the receptors into rupture
So too does hand sanitizer disrupt
Alcohol destabilizes and interrupts
This killer from causing the immune system's distress
And the issue that we must first address

What's needed is a RNA vaccine
Blocking the viral function
Or perhaps plasma filled with antibodies
To take on our viral enemies
It all comes down to inhibition
As treatment's grand ambition
Disrupting protease reproduction
Is the medicine needed for introduction
To the coronavirus family
With it's long history
Dating to the 1960s
SARS and MERS impact more slowly
Not near as effectively

I only hope that we find the right path
Before my life is taken by its deadly math

Retroactive Kaleidoscope

The optional objective for Day 17 of Na/GloPoWriMo 2020 is to write a poem incorporating a ‘forgotten’ technology.   Well, my choice is not so much as forgotten but once a has been yet now a collectible among some.

DSL Records Club - In the Heat

Retroactive Kaleidoscope
by Michael Doyle

In these days laced with twists of hope
Then fear, I find my mind a kaleidoscope
Thinking back on my wild side childhood
With it's savorings of both bad and good

It seems what I remember most is the sound
Tracked in my mind wherever feet found ground
My mind ventures back to when my sister would
Collect 45 records of favorites when she could

Now millennial hipsters find a need to indulge
Mainly to prevent the dreaded wallet bulge
Deifying aural ghosts of a time long since past
As if realizing that put on angst won't last

Living in drive by in a digitally driven age
Desperately in need of some sort of a sage
We find a time and reason that isn't economy
Mindfully aware of the failings of Silicon Valley

To fully fulfill the needs hungering in our souls
Played out in nostalgia on the portable consoles
Luddites of sound move beyond questions of capacity
Finding in vinyl a sense that surpasses capability

I don't believe its any sort of temporal mistake
To find a need for the artisanal in what we bake
Sun stroked in a thought mistaken for brilliance
In times like these, the living need resilience

We grasp for what can be fixed, remade and saved
In a world of planned obsolescence we've caved
Burrowing into the that which we can believe in
There is something in the permanence that is Zen

On Found Light

Reviewing my camera chops in real brought me to write this.

Anduril - Through The Camera's Eye

On Found Light
by Michael Doyle

It's not so much the light
But where you're in it
To get this just right
You have know where to bend it

The shadow can kill your shot
Whatever the ambient light
Let this never be forgot
It's about catching that sight

Sometimes it's the delicate feeling
That captures the view
The view that is soul revealing
It's about the adjustments you'll do

To make the best exposure last
It's best to remember the contrast
You can bring back details from the shadow
But the over exposed, you'll never know

The higher the ISO, the more detail
Your stops from darkness will deliberately reveal
The lower the ISO, you'll tackle the bright
To reduce your camera's sensitivity to light

Too high an ISO makes images grainy
Filled with noise that is unneeded maybe
Manipulating this sort of light sensitivity
Opens up a wide range of photo creativity

Front light can cause and image to be flat
Back light can enhance mystery in fact
Hatchet light can be tough to see
And the chin music of below light can be quite eerie

Light from above is great for interrogation
Use all of these shapes of light in integration
Yet, the softness of Rembrandt lighting subtly
Gives the shadowed depth of richness like harmony

Ambient light is infinite in it simplicity
That can create images of amazing complexity
Light against light is a matter of interplay
It helps you tell the full story of your day

Brushing light across the canvass of your day
Captures the moments for what you want to say
The best shots, however, are in even light
As the day transcends into the softness of night

Like Mercury Colliding

It’s day 16 of NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo, 2020!   What’s the challenge you ask?

“…to write a poem of over-the-top compliments. Pick a person, place, or thing you love, and praise it in the most effusive way you can. Go for broke with metaphors, similes, and more‘.

Home, Sweet, Home -EM David Tux

Like Mercury Colliding
by Michael Doyle

Like a goddess on high
She's the sun in my sky
The tears I'm dared to cry
And all the wonder in my why

She's my angel divine
The reasons to love that are mine
She's the one for whom I've waited
So desperately I am fated

Like mercury colliding
She's source of my priding
And maybe it's coinciding
That she'll always be the one I'm riding

Who I'm speaking of, of course
Is my Andalusian horse
Who takes me to the stars
Far away from noise and cars

Bringing me to the top of the world
Straight up with toes curled
She's the dream of my dreams
And in my coffee, she's my cream

Wordlessly wiser than wise
Speaking volumes with her eyes
Filling all my days with plenty
Without her, I'd be empty

She's the glam in my glamor
The way she moves makes me stammer
Stage struck with a sledge hammer
Hitting me like spam from a spammer

I am daily caressed by desire
Lit up fully as though on fire
Of her, I know I'll never tire
When it comes down to the wire

Who I'm speaking of, of course,
Is my Andalusian horse
Who takes me to the stars
Far away from noise and cars

Bringing me to the top of the world
Straight up with toes curled
She's the dream of my dreams
And in my coffee, she's my cream
