First Principles: A Primary Object Should Be the Education of Our Youth In the Science of Government

“A primary object should be the education of our youth in the science of government. In a republic, what species of knowledge can be equally important? And what duty more pressing… than … communicating it to those who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?” – George Washington

Sustaining Liberty

In this election year and in the midst of the pandemic, it makes at least me want to review those things that America is supposed to stand for as our moral compass.

Second Life Veterans Tribute 2019 - In Open Declaration

Sustaining Liberty
by Michael Doyle

Inherent as sisters and brothers
Is that no one rules another
Through all society's compact stays
These are freedom's sweet days

Filled with the fragrance of equality
For lives lived in truest liberty
All other rights from these derive
It is then the basis on which we thrive

If we do not give another our consent
Then their right to rule is absent
No one then has the right to dominate
A free people will not enslave their fate

But rather from consent is formed country
A social compact that will give society
There in the acquiescence to subordination
But, it only exists as agreed on in station

Consent of the governed to the government
The principles to which the people assent
In return the government is to provide protection
This is sacred to our cherished institutions

Armed forces and developed foreign policy
Are necessary to the preservation of liberty
Our borders must, of course, be maintained
For the integrity of our nation to be sustained

Also in our protection is to prevent crime
Constitutions and law protect us in our time
Sacrosanct is the protection of life, liberty and property
For which all three branches provide with dignity

Or, at least, these were the principles of our nation
Somehow the absence of budget has lost prioritization
And this differs greatly from the duty of preservation
Of natural rights as the social contract for our nation

Gifts From the Heart

Day 20 of Na/GloPoWriMo, 2020!  2/3rds of the way through this year’s event.  The optional prompt is to “write a poem about a handmade or homemade gift that you have received“.

Gifts From the Heart
by Michael Doyle

Since divorce split up my family
My ex has not allowed the girls to gift me
And yet, there it is always somehow
The bits of something even now

From heart felt arms around hugs
To hunts for elusive lady bugs
Always there is a card or gift
Despite the overwhelming rift

The best gifts of all come from the heart
I've taught them this since from start
And a gift is just a wish for happiness
So they know the best gifts are a hug and kiss

One of the best gifts I've ever gotten
Were friendship bracelets not to be forgotten
Made and kept hidden while at their school
Doing unto others like that great golden rule

It was this moment on Father's Day
And compellingly telling me in their own way
That each of them knew I am their dad and friend
They smilingly reminded me toward that end

Every things that I ever needed to hear
Dispelling my angst and my unspoken fears
Giving me a seamless smile from ear to ear
Offering to me their trust instead of tears

My oldest one is her father's daughter
Mindfully aware of the love of her father
On visitation, she sweetly holds my hand
And that's all I need to understand

That the greatest gift is their presence
Making my days complete with their essence
My youngest, she wants to take on the world
And I don't mind as long as she's curled

Up by my side as we watch a show
The greatest gift is to watch them grow
Basking in the every moments of their smiles
When they tell the world they love me all the while

No matter the moments of someone's division
We treat these knowing we've made our decision
That like three musketeers we are inseparable
No matter the cruelty of which some are capable

To Become A Knight

To be a knight is to be a servant for the country and its people.

Museum of Tournament -To Test Your Mettle

To Become A Knight
by Michael Doyle

The darkness is coming
There's no use in running
Ruthlessly conquering as it comes
It brings us to our knees
Mindlessly numbing
Savage as it is cunning
Taking us all and not just some
Doing as it wills and pleases

The world is in need of heroes
Waiting on signs from prophecy
To stop the lust for power
Awakening with a start
Surpluses driven to zeroes
As far as the eyes can see
Fate has come in this hour
When even the brave lose heart

Still, fighting desire is needed
Where instincts call to the soul
Still, a boy has to learn his way
Despite being knocked to the ground
There are lessons to be heeded
Consigned within a warrior's role
All in preparation for the day
When knighthood will be found

Doing what he can do
Doing what he must do
To survive all coming trials
He must have the will to become a knight
Straight, noble and true
Servant of God; protector of me and you
Learned of all needed of martial styles
He must have the will to become a knight

The darkness brings its destruction
Burning fire devours in its flames
Crushing all that gets in the way
As its riders spread the unholy word
Wise to the ways of instruction
The weak will bear the blame
God's knights must hold the day
Though the days pass as if blurred

Collection Recollection

Day 19 of Na/GloPoWriMo 2020 and the goal is a poem about a collection of whatever subject matter picked up along a walk.   After a myriad of ideas, good and possibly not so good, I have gone with being true to myself.   I have literally taken over 55,000+ photographs in my adult life.  Some 32,000 of these are on my Flickr.  How do I get these I thought and the tiny voice inside my head reminded me.. from walking and collecting all the visual moments that capture my mind’s eye and then my camera.

Roxy's Birthday Party

Collection Recollection
by Michael Doyle

Raising my eyes
Camera captures the skies
A thousand lights
Fill my summer nights

Hopes swirl and then rise
As I photograph full skies
I've never seen this
Without thinking of your kiss

The photographs are mine
Shared with the world to shine
Reminds me of a safer time
And the hillsides we would climb

A collection of recollection
Literally thousands waiting for inspection
Memories caught in digital
Mindscapes of the physical

God is the greatest artist, I said
And think on now as I sit on my bed
Wondering at all this self-isolation
Spread across the breadth of our nation
