A Nation In Need of Unity
by Michael Doyle

George H. Bush struggled under Reagan's shadow
With his pedigree and skills he led well as most know
It was Bush not Reagan who saw the Cold War's end
But most of this was already in trend

Within a year of Tiananmen Square's suppression
Germans would tear down the Wall, reuniting as one nation
One by one, part by part, the Soviet Empire disintegrated
By the end of 1991, most of Europe was reintegrated

Bush kept his dignity in check with humility
Even as all around him danced with overjoyed victory
With the Cold War ending, new challenges would come
It was important to prudently watch for where that would come

The arrangement for order with its variation of choices
Were as mixed as were its many toned choir of voices
Terrorism and rogue states reared their ugly heads
Global security was still needed as thugs caused dread

Iraq's invasion of Kuwait was against the intended Order
It took more than condemnation to push Hussein over the border
Operation Desert Storm's overwhelming force stopped the invasion
While attempting to successfully extricate our nation

It was a textbook attempt at the Containment Doctrine
Whose fatal flaw was in leaving a madman as sovereign
Fukayama's thesis had declared its end to all history
The world was declared the oyster of liberal democracy

While some might find the new world order favored our nation
Others saw a looming clash between world civilizations
Huntington argued the coming clash between cultural ways of life
Historically and religiously would create much strife

This and other drift has led to a quarter century of discontent
Where those having differing values have risen as malcontents
Economics are not the only factor that is ever needed
To stand strong in the age of fracture this must be heeded

Commonality between all has given way to fractured living
Where each of a million voices want to take instead of giving
None of the administrations since the Cold War have made unity
And instead, we are more fractured than ever in our history

America's confidence has waned in almost all of our institutions
Disaffection has never loomed larger in our once great nation
Wishful thinking will not bring our nation back together
But to reintegrate is the only way to make things better

The imperilment of our national debt is beyond question
One of the most significant issues to confront without hesitation
Annual deficits are a low parade our nation in its sinking
Unsustainable in being and requiring much in the way of thinking

With the pandemic, we are adding trillions of debt each year
Governmental functions must very swiftly reverse gear
Yet nothing is being done about the debilitation
And almost all agree we must join in our rehabilitation

Both public and private debt trend toward our corruption
At best and at worse it leads to our nation's disruption
We are still a land of hope and shine even in this hour
And saving our country for our children is in our power

Study of the past serves to provide lessons in inspiration
Together we have faced far worse problems for our nation
There is a Chinese symbol meaning both crisis and change
And it with this thought that we must swiftly rearrange

We should not stay blinded by the seemingly exceptional now
But should refocus to our best truths in our somehow
Looking back to look ever more and increasingly forward
With the view of being borne ever increasingly toward..

       … our future

The Stolen Presence of Both Past and Present

The thirteenth day of NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo 2020 has the prompt objective of writing a non-apology for things stolen.  This is a close as I have for the concept.  It’s akin, I believe to something said that I read once but have no real claim on.  Issac Newton on being asked about his thoughts and preceptions once said something like if he appeared to be a giant, it was simply because he was standing on the shoulders of giants.   In that my poetry and stories and even my music owes much to those who came before me, while having not 1/1000th of the talent and abilities of Newton, believe that would be true for me as well.  At least to the degree that if I have phrased something nicely or done well with one or another of things, themes, concepts, and so on, it’s merely and truly because I have opened my mind, heart and so to what the universe has to offer to the extent that it speaks to me and then set it out into place with my own refinement and sometimes utterly getting it both wrong and right simultaneously.

Calas Galadhon's New Santorini -Temple Ruins

The Stolen Presence of Both Past and Present
by Michael Doyle

If at times, my splash of words
     Appear to speak somewhat eloquently
As these move, shimmer and dance
Across the page ever so lightly

Then speaking in the humble truth
And letting it be spoken plainly
That since the earliest days of my youth
I have learned much from before me

Stretching back across all of history
Stealing all of its best thoughts
Exploring each in their full mystery
Along with its shoulds and oughts

From the observations and ethics
Of the likes of persons as Aristotle
To the random add-ons and notions
Of today, each approached in full throttle

Taking as I have from this all
Such as that I can and do claim
Doing my best to each lesson recall
Be it turn out to be brilliance or lame

First Principles: When All Government Is Drawn To Washington, We Will Be Rendered Powerless To Check Oppression

“When all government, domestic and foreign, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another, and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.” – Thomas Jefferson, in Letter to Charles Hammond (1821)

First Principles: No Person Shall Be Harmed For Worshipping God In the Manner Most Agreeable To Their Own Conscience

“It is the duty of all men in society, publicly, and at stated seasons, to worship the SUPREME BEING, the great Creator and Preserver of the universe. And no subject shall be hurt, molested, or restrained, in his person, liberty, or estate, for worshipping GOD in the manner most agreeable to the dictates of his own conscience; or for his religious profession or sentiments; provided he doth not disturb the public peace, or obstruct others in their religious worship.” – John Adams, in Thoughts on Government  (1776)

A Triolet For Easter

On the twelfth day of Na/GloPoWriMo 2020, the optional challenge is to write a triolet.

Looking this up here to find out its essential form: https://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Triolet-Poem and in that today is Easter Sunday in my traditions, I wrote this:

Nocturne - Vampire the Masquerade - Stain Glass Jesus

A Triolet For Easter
by Michael Doyle

Thank the Lord for His Resurrection
Through this, humanity is saved
Doubters can have their inspection
Thank the Lord for His Resurrection
I say this with my full affection
In our hearts, it's been engraved
Thank the Lord for His Resurrection
Through this, humanity is saved

The Reagan Renewal

American History continues through the Reagan presidency:

SL13 Spectacular - 1920s Berlin Proect - Birony Delorean

The Reagan Renewal
by Michael Doyle

By the late 70s, the Conservative movement formed a coalition
Not all were of the same mind, but it combined of its own volition
Seeking smaller government and less onerous regulation
Ronald Regan came to speak to this before the nation

The Great Communicator was a master of using the television
He put aside questions as to being qualified with great precision
In his younger days, he'd been a liberal Democrat with sympathy
Approaching their intentions with his gift for empathy

Reagan was nothing short of a shrewd conservative voice
In the stream of history, he was the coalition builder of choice
George H Bush, however, was favored by the Establishment
Yet, Reagan offered a more hopeful vision for government

He was the perfected transformative leader for our nation
Compelling in his simple message about our destination
Simple questions asked as to the People's betterment
His long coat tails provided for a most stable government

Offering that lower taxes raised greater revenue for our nation
With the same truth demonstrated by Mellon and Kennedy's avocation
The Democrats still favored Orwellian technocratic control
Reagan preferred freeing our money with a less bureaucratic role

The effect of increasing our military's budget
Brought a bit of doubt at unemployment raised to 11%
As we rode out an inflation stopping period of recession
We arrived at better public confidence of good impression

The Reagan/Bush Team won their 1984 re-election
The landslide given proved the electorate favored his direction
Rampant deficit spending was surged on by needed spending
With the Cold War conflict seemingly almost never ending

With a straight ahead philosophy in which they lose, we win
He began to restore our dignity and military might again
The circumstances led to laser-like SDI implementation
Causing the Soviet Union to realize the strength of our nation

Mikhail Gorbachev came to power urgently seeking reformation
Perestroika and Glasnost would come to rule the Soviet Union
This was an enormous time that provided much opportunity
Reagan pressed at Berlin's walls in a shining moment of history

The Floriography of Our Easter Love Renewed

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 11, 2020… and hoping each of you is having a blessed Easter eve!!  Today’s poem prompt is to write a poem featuring the secret language of flowers, floriography.  Given that I have been with my two little girls all day, I was tempted to rehash a poem I wrote a few years ago.   Then as I refreshed my mind on the symbolism my mind slipped into thinking on two things, Easter and my love for Desiree….

House of Prayer Dockside - Always In My Prayers

The Floriography of Our Easter Love Renewed
by Michael Doyle

Pressed like your words between two lips
Are your tulips offering me forgiveness
For my two hands holding onto your hips
Knowing that neither of us will deny this

Like Victorians in our unspoken symbology
Our love runs as deep as our shared theology
As we walk along the gardens of your womanhood
The nosegay over your heart is understood

White robed apostles of hope come to bloom
Reminding where Jesus' sweat released us from our doom
In repentance, your innocence and purity
Returns my thoughts to virtue and upholding dignity

The purples of your azaleas remind that like royalty
You have become and are my queen, safe in my loyalty
As you give me the temperance of self control
I know that each of us takes up our rightful role

Handing you a single rose with five soft petals
Each as if the wounds of Christ, worn like a medal
Forgive my heart for it's lingering mortal sin
And I know this Easter, we do renew our love again
