Mule Ride

Youngest daughter asks for a poem about mules.  In my mind, heart and dreams this turns into an imaginary ride down the Grand Canyon Rim for an overnight trip filled with star gazing and… well…. here….

Zion National Park - River Flow

Mule Ride
by Michael Romani

I

All the stars and dust
Out in deepest space
Are not enough or as it must
These cause folks to embrace

The beauty of a mule ride
Down the Grand Canyon's side
Almost nothing is more sure footed as a mule
And my growing daughters would not need a stool

To climb abroad for the ride of a lifetime
More adventure offered than prime time
You give your best cowgirl hoots with abandon
As we ride down the rim of this canyon

There in you and your sister's sweet eyes
Are enough thank you for the morning sunrise
As we stay overnight on the canyon floor
I can't imagine a father wanting much more

II

Moments like these are kept through the years
How my daughters made friends with long ears
Gentle creatures born to carry to capacity
And yet unreasonably rumored as contrary

Descended perhaps from a carrier of divinity
Too often not given proper dignity
Yet, our precious loads these bear
Delivering these to ground with good care

Spoken to with comfort needed to understand
Loving the simple touch of gentle hands
Laughing with a hugely wide mouthed grin
My daughters had each made themselves a friend

Clattering hooves on path stones
Two princesses set on their mule-ish thrones
With big ole noses planted between two brown eyes
Steadfastly, took us down to greet the sunrise

III

A long night spent with stars and shiver
The Phantom Ranch sits north of the River
Hanging gardens, springs and dripping seeps
Flower along the passages as willows weep

Abundance of sorts hides among the creosote
As guides list off the animals as if by rote
Explaining how river canyon provides corridor
While hungry eyes search for more and more

Excited eyes wonder at the Vishnu Schist
As the river bottom rises from morning mists
After spending the night stargazing on lark
It's said that half of this park shines after dark

There in its horizon to zenith view
The peaceful Colorado reveals the north as true
While happy eyes make out illuminated constellations
Cherished as the night at this wistful destination

First Principles: There Is Hope That Younger Generations Impressed With the Flame of Liberty Will Sympathize With the Oppressed Wherever Found

“I had always hoped that the younger generation receiving their early impressions after the flame of liberty had been kindled in every breast … would have sympathized with oppression wherever found, and proved their love of liberty beyond their own share of it.”  – Thomas Jefferson (1814)

Ode To A Mermaid Friend

A new friend who helped me in getting my bearings in the new place I have in SL and encourages me to form a poetry group there is a mermaid.  We were talking about the funny quips she has on her profile and somehow that evolved into  me saying that I bet I could write a poem around these.  … And umm so,.. I did.

Lazy Daze -Two Worlds Merged

Ode To A Mermaid Friend
by Michael Romani

The ocean holds its depths
Deeper than she's wept
Wrecked on a stormy rock
In legends sailors talk

A siren's call to destiny
Heard as if in mystery
As we drown our souls
Losing our fading control

Like a drowning man
Who's done the best he can
To find up from down
And ends with the jester's crown

Spied combing her long hair
More dark than ever fair
She dreams of the ocean
With every drop of emotion

That she spares us from
In her watery kingdom
Turning to mortal at night
But mystical by first light

Words fall becoming inspired
By the fancy of dreams desired
Fallen as Ode to A Mermaid
Paid full like the gold of a dragon's fade

Fading into the mist of magic
Tales whispered are often tragic
Music plays tempting mortal souls
Tempted by dejavu out of control

All of the lost become mer men
Who have become their sin
Answering  her call of eternity
Mahogany given fades into mystery

The opinions of shrimp mean nothing
Just rattled chains of that something
That must naturally become food
Depending on her celestial mood

Thought For the Day: Love Is Friendship That Has Caught Fire

“Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.” – Ann Landers

Virtuosity

In memory of the passing of Neil Pert, percussionist and lyricist extraordinaire:

Not that great of a job on this but.. for the memory of a good man passing, Neil Pert:

Virtuosity
by Michael Romani

Quietly fighting against his demise
With a flamboyant style, so precise
The virtuoso penned lyrics quite literate
His depth of contemplation being quite considerate

Between Ayn Rand and a science fiction confluence
Neil Peart never sold out in being an influence
Standing strong as our musical hero of the hour
Fighting against the corporate beast that devours

Choosing always to fight and never compromise
His battle was one of a hero who would always surprise
Never one to stop believing in asserting complexity
He lived his life every inch in complete integrity

Eight bars pushed to the limits of creativity
Pursuing ideas explored in their potentiality
He was a master of drumming with technical proficiency
But, it’s for his lyrics, I will keep his memory

Somehow closer to my heart and to all our hearts
Each of us cast in unlikely roles, we play our parts
And that part now is to mourn this good man’s death
Who lived his life until his very last breath

God speed to him as he has found his way home
And I like a boy on a rooftop quite alone
Find that the more that things change
That, indeed, these things have stayed the same

I shed humble tears in quiet musical gratitude
For the inspiration given in great magnitude
A blessing in every note and word in syncopation
Neil Pert, to me, will always be a great inspiration

Rules of the Beast I

A sort of start at a poetic retelling of the classic Dracula tale:

Nocturne - Vampire the Masquerade -To A Castle Dark and Stormy

Rules of the Beast I
by Michael Romani

As the approach is made to castle
There is fear amongst its vassals
A crucifix is given in protection
It's a mistake perhaps of circumspection

With a knock upon the castle door
Bats are released and perhaps something more
Jonathan Harker steps forward with hesitation
He finds the table of his destination

A dinner is ate as it's set out for one
The man eats not knowing what's begun
In a rising labyrinth of darkened shadow
It is a prison without locks to know

Death knows its cold and chilling embrace
With questions biting in the window's face
Mirrors given in moments of feeble vanity
The blood driven in all the pulsing humanity

Drops of blood contain a bit of all of everything
All of the lives lived and given are as nothing
All that is past and present is instantly known
And through this flow in our veins is shown

Shown and heard in the castle creaks and groans
As if the Count's house were his very own
With each heartbeat one seeks the solace of home
Where love is heaven and we are not alone

This pride in ourselves is surely beyond compare
Each of these providing their soul binding snare
We live our lives in startling, numbing contradiction
Obliged to stumble along often without direction

Life is filled with its unexpected turns
A maze of sorts from which we are to learn
All of our steps taken leading to wrong choice
As the rules of the beast starts to find its voice

First Principles: National Defense Is One of the Cardinal Duties of A Statesman

“National defense is one of the cardinal duties of a statesman.” – John Adams (1815)

This bears repeating giving the hew and cry about the decision to take out a terroristic mastermind and a few of his cronies doesn’t it?

Incidentally, an attack on a nation’s embassy is under international law seen as the same as attacking that nation’s soil.  Keep that in mind when asking how porportionate the response was.  It was indeed an act of war on Iran’s part to attack our embassy whether it used shi’a militia or Iranian troops.  I believe that’s enough said.

Other than peace minded Iranians under that thuggish regime might want to keep in mind that the full wrath of United States might have been hurled at the nation itself.  Instead the thug who was responsible was held accountable and dealt with in a succinct act targeting only those senior most leaders who orchestrated the attack on our embassy.

Peace is always the first course until the opposing side forces a person or nation to act.  Then when acting the violence used should only be escalated to the point of stopping further actions on the hostile party’s part.  The leadership in Iran knew that they were not dealing with a weak government.  It was foolish to attack our embassy.
