Llama Del Ray

Happy National Llama Day 2019 to all my favorite llamas and those who love them!  And that’s quite a lot of love when you think about there being something like 150,000 llamas in the United States alone….

Llama Del Ray
by Michael Romani

There are 150,000 llamas in the United States
It's hard to say how many are without dates
But, it does seem just a bit more than strange
That they don't seem to belong to this range

What I do know is that Del Ray was nobody's camel
Certainly not the run of the mill sort of mammal
Always out for fun and good times never heavy drama
But all the same she was the spitting image of a llama

She would talk about her heritage and her people
The Andean Mountains and Peruvian Incan steeples
Figured deeply in her cameloid sensitive memory
Though imbued with a singular flair, she loved her family

She was never the kind to stop and get good sleep
Except when she konked out on mountain ridges so steep
That it took the wind right out of her every song
Still this was just exactly where she did truly belong

Dancing cheek to cheek only pausing to finally graze
Lovely lady llama dreams along with her coquettish ways
Always strutting her stuff in her fine woolen pajamas
Llama Del Ray will long be remembered by all the llamas

Architectural Abstractions

Lost my list of days celebrated in December, soooo… I am pitch hitting with this one:

Architectural Abstractions
by Michael Romani

There in the art of geometry
The spatial relationship is everything
Crystalized rocks bend into symmetry
Organizing rugged bits of nothing into that something

Natural light brings buildings to breathe
Exposed as it should be as it is conceived
All of the architecture pieced together
Slips into parabolic openings that feel better

Explicit then in its overlapping design
Science and art together are masterpieces of the mind
How we then choose to see our perceptions,
Filters and choices blend into mass conception

Walls once built must be torn down
This is the what that our new world has found
Difficult in scope to finally understand
The abstract and concrete are joined hand in hand

Once just a matter of obscurity that's seen
The spectator has risen to participate in fully being
This then is our new found capacity
Dreamy in concept to accentuate to our capability

Thought For the Day: We Make A Living By What We Get, But, We Make A Life By What We Give

First Principles: Ambition Must Be Made To Counteract Ambition

“Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. What is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?” – James Madison (1788)

Between A Cookie and A Cake

December 8th is set aside by some and somewhat unofficially as National Brownie Day!  That’s alright by me.  When I was a kid I always thought brownies and chocolate chip cookies should be their own separate food group with still another set aside for bacon… Yes, I know.. all bad ideas… but oh so good tasting. 🙂

Between A Cookie and A Cake
by Michael Romani

The day is coming to and end
And, yes, I know it's getting late
With a new day just around the bend
And still this poem would not wait

You see, I think that it's very fine
That today's homage is to a favorite of mine
There between a cookie and cake
Is a tasty bit of chocolate waiting for me to take

Just another bite of, smooth of silk
Still, I can't resist this along with milk
Just the right sort of almost confection
That is amazingly close to baked perfection

Soon my head will be against a pillow
And yet with another bite, I know I'll owe
A dream against that soft as downy
Of hot fudge sundae of another huge brownie

There's no counting calories in our sleep
Besides the counting would go far too deep
Best just to get on out of my dreaming way
I'll just work out harder in the coming day

Thought For the Day: The Wise Teacher Leads You To the Threshold of Your Mind, Not Theirs

“If  (the teacher) is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind.” – Kahlil Gibran

Urban Christianity

A Sunday sort of poem…

Urban Christianity
by Michael Romani

Fully formed in my Christianity
I have come to belief quite rationally
But, also find it credible emotionally
Bit by bit, I have been ratifying
These things of belief, I find soul satisfying

Agrarian in all matters of simple trust
It's a respect well earned as it must
Be to be won in moments felt sincere and just
Not just an office hours mentality
But, as if, one were part of the community

It's often not enough that God has His reasons
Or, to understate life as a passing of seasons
Still, just as with Job, suffering isn't God's treasons
The belief in evil and suffering requires transcendent truth
Or, it can't be defined as we have since our youth

Nature suggests that the strongest will survive
But as we live we need more than to be alive
And so we tussle with this until we arrive
Concluding there must be a supernatural standard of God
It's by this means that the Cross is understood

Science can't get you from the is to the ought
Nor serve as basis for any morality willingly bought
There are bigger questions with answers that must be sought
And science alone cannot adjudicate the controversy
The essence of things that must be resolved through God's mercy

Some people claim faith as a gift just not received
But to believe that they don't act on faith is self deceived
Logical proofs of cannot evidence things like equality
Yet to most, this is the accepted axiom of our reality
Leaps of such faith are truisms ingrained within us

So much we take for granted is both reason and belief
So much of what we act on is needed to give relief
The constant fight against injustice requires we withstand grief
This mix of reason and faith is our very human legacy
That provides the very best of all things we hold contemporary

Like Sand Becomes A Pearl

On December 7, 1941, the then Japanese Empire attacked America killing some 2,400 people and bringing the US into World War II.  Today is remembered in the US as National Pearl Harbor Day of Remembrance.

Like Sand Becomes A Pearl
by Michael Romani

An attack such as this lives on in memory
Quite right it is to call this one of infamy
Lives lost and wars begun are a tragedy
But if lessons are drawn, it creates a legacy

A legacy of recognition that the only wars truly won
Are the type that we deflect and are never begun
Yamamoto said that a brilliant man avoids war
Perhaps we will find a way to never fight more

Many will gather today to remember the tragic events
Seventy eight years ago that we can not circumvent
But we can and did move beyond with hatred's end
And in so ending we became two nations of friends

As horrifying as it was and terrifying as it is
We would be remiss to allow fear to be the end of this
We must also remember all who gave their lives with bravery
Too many giving their lives fully dying with gallantry

With time, God changes everything into it's best light
Transforming every wrong done eventually into some right
It's much like how with time, sand becomes the oyster pearl
Like this then, we too, must go on and transform the world

While we must never forget that part which is our irritation
We would be and are wise if we allow this to become inspiration
To set our eyes and souls on the better things of beauty
And let this then become what we forge together in our legacy

Thought For the Day: True Wisdom Comes At Realizing How Little We Understand About Life, Ourselves and the World Around Us
